More consequential, however, was the stagnant or shrinking turnout in these cities, which — coupled with turnout growth in Republican counties across the blue wall — drove Trump’s victory. While the number of voters throughout the rest of Michigan grew by 2.6%, the number in Detroit fell by 4%. NBC News Decision DeskThe third large blue wall city is Milwaukee, which makes up about 60% of Milwaukee County’s population. Even though turnout grew slightly overall in the city, just over half of precincts (58%) experienced a turnout decrease. Comparing Milwaukee’s sluggish turnout to Dane County — which is Wisconsin’s other large Democratic county, where turnout increased by over 6% — helps to show how different demographics may explain turnout changes.

The NBA fined Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball $100,000 Sunday for using “offensive and derogatory” language during a postgame TV interview. At issue was an anti-gay phrase Ball used when answering a sideline interviewer’s question about defending the last shot against Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo in Charlotte’s 115-114 win over the Bucks on Saturday. Hornets coach Charles Lee addressed Ball’s remark in his postgame press conference and said Ball was “very apologetic.”“As an organization, that is obviously not something we condone,” said Lee, who is in his first season as Charlotte’s coach. “Our standards and what is required of our players in the environment we create is really important to us.”Ball, 23, is averaging 29.6 points through 12 games for the Hornets, ranking fifth in the NBA.

The mayor of Waukesha, the seat of a reliably Republican county outside Milwaukee, Wisconsin, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president on Wednesday — the first time the formerly Republican city leader is supporting a Democrat for commander in chief, the campaign said. Wisconsin is a key battleground state that could be a critical piece of Harris or Trump's path to victory on election night. In 2000, just 32% of voters in Waukesha County voted for Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore, while in 2020 39% of voters there supported President Joe Biden. On Thursday, GOP former Michigan Rep. Fred Upton also endorsed Harris, saying in a statement that he has never voted for a Democrat for president "until now." Other former GOP members of Congress that have endorsed Harris include Liz Cheney, R-Wyo and Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill. Harris also touts endorsements from GOP former Sen. Opinion Guest Essay The 21 Slivers of America That Could Decide the Election Sebastian Siadecki for The New York TimesIn almost every presidential battleground state, polling suggests something close to a dead heat between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. For Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump, each could be a crucial building block in a winning swing-state coalition. In 2016, with Mr. Trump in the race, these areas began to march to national trends: Rural areas trended Republican, while Milwaukee’s well-off, close-in suburbs zoomed left. Still, loyalties remain potent in Wisconsin, from Democratic-leaning, ancestrally Scandinavian voters in the state’s rural west to middle-class suburban Republicans outside Milwaukee. Mr. Trump lost Nash County by just 0.2 points in 2020 and Wilson County by three points.

CNN —The Republican National Committee is asking the Secret Service to keep protesters farther back from the July convention in Milwaukee than is currently planned. Alexi Worley, spokesperson for the Secret Service, said in a statement that the agency is “not formally in receipt of the letter” and will “respond through appropriate channels” if it receives one. “The operational security plan for national special security events, to include the 2024 Republican National Convention, is developed and approved through an executive steering committee made up of representatives from the Secret Service, as well as supporting federal, state, and local agencies,” Worley said. The RNC announced in 2022 it would host this year’s convention in Milwaukee, and the city’s Democratic mayor, Cavalier Johnson, dismissed security concerns at the time. “Our police department is well-versed, and I think they are prepared for the convention,” Johnson said in 2022, noting that Milwaukee was supposed to host the 2020 Democratic National Convention before it switched to a virtual format amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The dominant talking point of the NBA offseason was what color jersey Damian Lillard would be putting on this season. Holiday dribbles during the second half of the Celtics' preseason game against the New York Knicks.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Zac Gallen settled down after a shaky start and Arizona’s bullpen stepped up at the very end, helping the Diamondbacks sweep their NL Wild Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers with a 5-2 victory in Game 2 on Wednesday night. Just two years after suffering through a 110-loss season, Arizona moved into the franchise's first NL Division Series since 2017. The Diamondbacks will take on the NL West champion Dodgers in the opener of their best-of-five series on Saturday in Los Angeles. The NL Central champion Brewers have dropped nine of their last 10 playoff games, a stretch that started with their Game 7 home loss to the Dodgers in the 2018 NL Championship Series. Brandon Woodruff had been regarded as the Brewers’ likely Game 2 starter until a shoulder injury shut him down for this series.

The Brewers have reached the playoffs five of the last six years, the exception coming last season. There’s a sense of urgency associated with this playoff berth because of the long-term uncertainty surrounding some key figures. The Brewers were one win away from the World Series in 2018 when they lost a Game 7 at home to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but they haven’t won a postseason series since. Although Milwaukee owns a combined 2-10 record against the Atlanta Braves and Dodgers — the NL’s top two playoff seeds — the Brewers’ pitching gives them reason for optimism. The Brewers have lost seven of their last eight postseason games, a stretch that started with that Game 7 defeat in 2018.
