The return of DCM activity signals that borrowers are gearing up for corporate dealmaking to return. Goldman's global head of financing broke down the trends in an interview with BI. On Wall Street, corporate borrowing is on a roll. Many of those clients are large companies or organizations being advised by Goldman's investment bankers, which means the DCM business is directly reliant on deal flow. Those hushed discussions have now morphed into an all-out battle that is playing out directly from the patio of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida. And one of the biggest battles that emerged – over chief of staff – has since been resolved. Trump on Thursday named his campaign manager Susie Wiles to the role, touting her as the first woman to hold it. But that contest had previously boiled down to two names: Wiles and Brooke Rollins, who served in Trump’s first term and runs the America First Policy Institute. Occasionally over the past few months, Trump floated names as possible administration picks, but he would not engage further.

Below, two gold experts share four ways investors can add gold to their portfolios. AdvertisementIn general, physical gold is a less liquid way to own the asset and is quite costly. Synthetic gold ETFs don't hold physical gold, investing instead in gold derivatives such as futures and options. In Milling-Stanley's opinion, investing in mining stocks instead of directly investing in gold erodes some of the metal's portfolio protection, as mining stocks behave more in line with the general equity market. Royalties limit the holder's exposure to the risks associated with directly investing in mines, such as exploration, development, and regulatory compliance.

Over the years, travelers have repeatedly been warned to avoid public Wi-Fi in places like airports and coffee shops. Airport Wi-Fi, in particular, is known to be a hacker honeypot, due to what is typically relatively lax security. He allegedly set up a fake Wi-Fi network to steal email or social media credentials. How to avoid becoming a victim of this cybercrimeWhen in public places, experts say it's best to use alternatives to public WiFi networks. Alcorn says evil twin attacks are "definitely" occurring with regularity in the United States, it's just rare for someone to get caught because they are such stealth attacks.

The magnitude of mining waste globally is staggering, with tens of thousands of tailings piles containing 245 billon tons (223 billion metric tons), researchers say. Overseeing Leadville’s water supply is Parkville Water District Manager Greg Teter, who views CJK Milling as potential solution to water quality problems. As long as Leadville’s piles remain, their potential to pollute continues. Despite the mess from Leadville’s historic mining, Teter spoke proudly of his industry ties, including working in two now-closed mines. “If it were not for mining, Leadville would not be here.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Opening statements were expected Wednesday in the federal trial of three former Memphis police officers charged with federal civil rights violations in the January 2023 beating death of Tyre Nichols. Police video released that month showed the five officers, who also are Black, beating Nichols as he yelled for his mother about a block from his home. The officers said Nichols was pulled over for reckless driving, but Memphis’ police chief has said there is no evidence to substantiate that claim. The three officers now facing trial, along with Martin and Mills, were fired for violating Memphis Police Department policies. They had been members of a crime suppression team called the Scorpion Unit, which was disbanded after Nichols’ death.

Can Dirt Clean the Climate?

Across 100,000 acres in the vast agricultural heartland of Australia, an unusual approach is taking root to slow down the wrecking ball of climate change. Farmers are trying to tap the superpowers of tiny subterranean tendrils of fungus to pull carbon dioxide out of the air and stash it underground. It’s part of a big bet that entrepreneurs and investors around the world are making on whether dirt can clean up climate pollution. Like Loam Bio, companies like Andes and Groundworks Bio Ag are also experimenting with microbes. Silicate Carbon is milling leftover concrete into a fine powder, while several companies are scorching crop waste into charcoal.

A block away, the city had quietly begun sheltering migrants inside an empty 10-building office compound. Over the next few months, it would become one of the city’s biggest shelter complexes — housing more than 4,000 migrants just a few blocks from a residential neighborhood. The gargantuan scale of the shelters swiftly tested nearby residents in the liberal enclave of Clinton Hill. Their willingness to welcome migrants soon gave way to a litany of quality-of-life complaints, from littering and loitering to concerns about safety, leading to crowded town-hall meetings and pressure on Mayor Eric Adams to reverse course. On the night of July 21, a migrant man was shot and killed at a park near the shelter.

Separate data on spending shows that American shoppers are still shopping. That measure strengthened in the second quarter, rising to a 2.9% rate compared to 2.6% seen earlier this year. Generally, one risk that comes with an economy that’s expanding robustly is that price pressures can either get stuck or heat up. Businesses are still spending, but less on thisBusinesses invested much more in the second quarter than in the first three months of the year. With over 50 years of experience in the gold industry, Milling-Stanley believes today's macroeconomic environment is ripe for gold to outperform. The possibility of a rate cut in the next six months has been looming over the economy, which should boost the price of gold, Milling-Stanley said. State Street Global AdvisorsUS dollar depreciation will also push gold prices up, he said. He estimates a 50% probability of gold prices ending the year in the $2,200 to $2,500 range and a 30% probability of prices rising between $2,500 and $2,700. Other cost-efficient options include the SPDR Gold MiniShares Trust (GLDM), iShares Gold Trust (IAU), Goldman Sachs Physical Gold ETF (AAAU), and GraniteShares Gold Trust (BAR).

Investors looking to weather a volatile market may want to opt for physical gold over gold stocks. That's according to George Milling-Stanley, one of the world's experts in gold and the chief gold strategist at State Street Global Advisors. "One of the reasons I own gold bar(s) is that I believe it offers me some protection against potential weakness in the equity market," Milling-Stanley told CNBC's "ETF Edge" this week. "When the equity market goes down, gold mining stocks remember that they're equities, and they tend to go down with the general level of the equity market.
