A little more than 4,000 people attended their average game in 2023, which ranked them second to last. Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark were teammates in the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game. To the Editor:Re “Willie Mays, Baseball’s Electrifying Player of Power and Grace, Is Dead at 93” (obituary, nytimes.com, June 18):I was 10 when the Giants moved from New York to San Francisco. From the very first day I watched Willie Mays play ball in Seals Stadium, I was hooked. By the time I graduated from high school in 1966, I proudly displayed 15 framed pictures of the Say Hey Kid on my bedroom walls. Today’s stars, like Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout and Aaron Judge, are truly talented players, but they don’t play baseball the way Willie did. A 24-time All-Star and a two-time M.V.P., the Say Hey Kid was my idol.

CNN —I can’t recall a recent baseball story that has captured the public imagination like the current one involving Los Angeles Dodgers phenom Shohei Ohtani, his former translator Ippei Mizuhara and gambling. That said, assuming Ohtani has done nothing wrong, America’s pastime will emerge from this situation mostly unscathed. Ohtani stalls at second base after hitting a double during the first inning of a game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Yes, one team is favored to win, but we don’t know that team will win for sure. And if it occurs involving someone as beloved as Ohtani, it could be a disaster for not just baseball, but sports around the globe.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels will not trade three-time AL MVP Mike Trout, general manager Perry Minasian confirmed at MLB's winter meetings on Tuesday. “Mike Trout will not be getting traded, 100%,” Minasian told MLB.com and other outlets. Trout is under contract through 2030, and he makes $35.45 million annually with a full no-trade clause. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Phil Nevin will not return as the Los Angeles Angels' manager next season. Nevin was promoted to the Angels’ top job in June 2022 when Joe Maddon was fired in the middle of a 14-game losing streak. But the Angels didn’t win for him, finishing 46-60 after he took over in 2022 and going 73-89 this season for the franchise’s eighth straight losing record. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins clinched the AL Central title Friday night with an 8-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Pablo López (11-8) pitched six innings for the Twins, allowing three runs and five hits with seven strikeouts. It’s their 15th trip to the postseason since the Washington Senators moved to Minnesota in 1961 and became the Twins.
