Two years ago, Kari Lake appeared to be on an unstoppable path to becoming the governor of Arizona. Now she's a heavy underdog to Rep. Ruben Gallego in a state where Trump and Harris are tied. download the app Email address Sign up By clicking “Sign Up”, you accept our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy . Combative yet charismatic, Lake was quickly recognized as the most skilled purveyor of Trumpism aside from the former president himself. She wasn't simply imitating Donald Trump but refashioning his political style to fit her own profile as a well-known local TV anchor.

But the surveys also reveal a noticeable gap in support between the pro-abortion rights amendments and the Democratic presidential and Senate candidates who are campaigning on a pro-abortion rights platform. Pro-abortion rights ballot measures won in every state where they appeared on the ballot, including conservative-leaning ones, in the 2022 and 2023 elections. Similarly in Arizona, a proposed amendment to enshrine abortion rights in the state’s constitution has clear majority support. In Montana, there’s little evidence that the presence of an abortion rights amendment has had a major effect on the race between three-term Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican challenger Tim Sheehy. For example, in Missouri, public polling indicates broad support for a constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion rights, while Republican Sen. Josh Hawley and Trump hold strong leads in their races.

Nikki Haley Still Isn’t Quitting

Nikki Haley lost badly in Iowa and New Hampshire. In Nevada on Tuesday, she ran unopposed in an irrelevant primary and finished behind “None of These Candidates.” But she is still trying to broaden voters’ imagination of what’s possible, both for her prospects in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, and for the nation. She has money in the bank, a strategy to expand the Republican base and a new unabashedly adversarial stance toward former President Donald Trump. Yet she is coming up against tough electoral math, and a Republican base that seems determined to nominate Trump for the third time. Mike Noble, a pollster who works in Arizona and Nevada, noted that about seven in 10 Republicans nationally say they don’t believe that Trump actually lost in 2020.

Rep. Ruben Gallego is running for the Democratic nomination, setting up a potential three-way race if Sinema runs as an independent. But polling shows that Sinema and Gallego would not simply divide the Democratic vote, handing the race to GOP firebrand Lake. But if former Democrat Sinema runs as an independent, Gallego still prevails in the poll, getting 41% of the vote. In a three-way race, Gallego is ahead in Noble's polling, with 34% support, compared to 26% for Sinema and 25% for Lake. But once Kennedy said he was running as an independent, Republicans rushed to separate themselves from him.

It belies a conventional narrative that Democrats were universally ceding Latino voters to the Republican Party, a story line repeated throughout the run-up to the Nov. 8 midterms. Instead, indicators show the GOP in danger of losing Latino voters in this region, a prospect that could mean being boxed out of the Southwest for the long term. In New Mexico, the state with the most residents identifying as Hispanic or Latino in the country, Latino Democrats won nearly every statewide race. Even with some Latino voters staying home, NBC News exit polling showed that Cortez Masto won more than 60% of that vote. Still, there’s plenty of danger signs for Democrats when it comes to Latino voters, particularly among men.
All of those factors make Washoe County the ultimate battleground for Cortez Masto and Laxalt. Both campaigns say that in the final 11 days, they’re swamping Washoe County with TV ads, canvassers and events. “Without a significant win in Washoe County, she has very few paths of winning Nevada.”Washoe County eluded Cortez Masto and Laxalt in their most recent statewide races. “The Democrats keep harping on that item here,” Bruce Parks, the Washoe County Republican chair, said of the abortion issue. “As I talk to Nevadans, including in Washoe County, it’s a combination of things — it’s not just the kitchen table issues,” she said.
LAS VEGAS — Jim Marchant, the election-denying Republican nominee for secretary of state in Nevada, has so far been outspent and out campaigned by his Democratic opponent. Davis, a Republican, said he “hadn’t thought much” about whether the 2020 election was stolen from Trump and remained undecided in the secretary of state race. The dynamics in Arizona’s secretary of state race are similar. He and Marchant, as well as Kristina Karamo, the Republican secretary of state nominee in Michigan, are all members of the pro-Trump America First Secretary of State Coalition, though polling shows Karamo’s race is far less competitive. “This could be the last free and fair election in Nevada,” West said.
