But there’s really no such thing. While Ron Ely was not quite as well-known as Johnny Weismuller, the Olympic swimmer who played Tarzan in movies in the 1930s and 1940s, Ely helped form the image of the shirtless, loincloth-wearing character further immortalized by Disney. “He was an actor, writer, coach, mentor, family man and leader,” Kirsten Ely said in an Instagram post. ROSWELL, N.M. — The New Mexico National Guard continued search and rescue operations Sunday in Roswell after record rainfall produced severe flooding in and around the city and Chaves County and left at least two people dead. Guard officials said 309 people had been rescued since Saturday, with 38 of those taken to hospitals for treatment of undisclosed injuries. Roswell city officials said water levels had receded in many parts of the city but remained high in the downtown area. Search and rescue efforts are underway in Roswell, N.M., on Sunday, following severe flooding. Authorities set up a shelter at the Eastern New Mexico state fairgrounds for Roswell residents displaced by the flooding.

CNN —At least one person has died and hundreds have been rescued in Roswell, New Mexico, after extreme overnight rainfall brought severe flooding, stranding motorists and sweeping away cars. The New Mexico National Guard and other agencies have rescued at least 290 people, including 38 who were taken to hospitals, the agency confirmed in a statement. The National Weather Service declared an overnight flash flood emergency for Roswell and nearby areas, as emergency management within Chaves County reported numerous water rescues. “We feel for the New Mexicans affected by this latest flooding in our state,” said Maj. Gen. Miguel Aguilar, the New Mexico National Guard’s Adjutant General. “Because of the previous flooding in Ruidoso, we have the experience and were ready for this.

The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled that convicted felons who served their sentences are allowed to vote, after the state's top election official sought to keep them from casting ballots ahead of the Nov. 5 election. Nebraska has historically restored the voting rights of former felons two years after they completed the terms of their sentences. While Nebraska is solidly Republican state, it awards an electoral vote to the winner of each of its congressional districts. The Sentencing Project, criminal justice reform advocacy group, estimated that eliminating the waiting period for convicted felons in Nebraska would restore voting rights for 7,000 people. Far more completed their felony sentences more than two years ago, too, and were affected by the state officials prohibition on their voter registration.
