CNN —More than 100 soccer players from the women’s game have signed an open letter to FIFA, urging the sport’s world governing body to end its sponsorship deal with Saudi oil and gas company Aramco. In April this year, FIFA announced a four-year global partnership with the majority state-owned oil giant, giving it sponsorship rights to the 2026 men’s World Cup and the 2027 Women’s World Cup. “The Saudi authorities trample not only on the rights of women, but on the freedom of all other citizens too,” the letter, addressed to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, said. Last year, it produced an average of 12.8 million barrels of oil a day, far more than any other company. US oil and gas companies combined, however, produce more than Saudi Arabia, according to a 2023 analysis from the US Energy Information Administration.

A 19-year-old Spain striker, Paralluelo was a bright prospect in track and field, too, such a gifted runner that she might even have represented her country at the Tokyo Olympics two years ago. Spain’s meeting with the Netherlands on Friday in the quarterfinals of this Women’s World Cup was always likely to be close. Four years ago, that mixture was enough to carry the Netherlands to the World Cup final against the United States. It had finished, most significantly, ahead of the United States. The squad’s confidence was growing sufficiently that forward Lineth Beerensteyn could even afford to take a little swipe at the United States team when she met with reporters before the game.

Roord drew a fantastic save from Kim Thanh just before halftime, but Van de Donk was on hand to tap in the rebound. After Brugts' superb sixth with another fierce strike, Roord, who had hit the crossbar, headed in the seventh with seven minutes remaining. "Their experience may be an advantage or people may look at it as an advantage. But the unknowns and unpredictability that comes with our squad could be an advantage," Andonovski said. Portugal play Vietnam in the other Group E encounter which gives the two World Cup debutants their best chance to register a first win. The United States are gunning for an unprecedented third straight title while the Dutch will want to revive the spirit of their 2017 European Championship win. "This will be an example of modern women's football. It will be a fight from the first minute until the last with teams who want to compete, teams who want to win, teams who respect each other, who both have no fear," Jonker told reporters. "Both want to win the group so this is going to be a really good match." "We all know America has been one of the best teams in the world for a long, long time.

"This is going to be an incredibly difficult match up, very challenging," said Morgan, who is competing in the tournament for the fourth time. "We watched the Netherlands the other night, and they have a lot of the same players as we played them in the World Cup four years ago." The American defence was solid in their 3-0 opening win over Vietnam on Saturday, scarcely letting the World Cup debutants into the final third. But the U.S. spurned several chances to find the net and Morgan, who failed to score a first-half penalty against Vietnam, conceded that there is room for improvement. I feel like some of the plays that we had were a little forced or rushed," said Morgan.

Their quest begins in Dunedin against Portugal, who are the highest ranked newcomers at this year's event at world number 21. But the focus ahead of their Group E opener was on the training conditions in New Zealand, with Netherlands coach Andries Jonker saying the facilities had been inadequate. "History is history and the future is the future, you can only live where we are now," Sweden coach Peter Gerhardsson said on Saturday. France reached the World Cup quarter-finals on home soil four years ago and will begin their campaign against Jamaica in Group F in Sydney with a clean slate under coach Herve Renard, with off-field issues finally behind them. Renard, who led Saudi Arabia to a group stage win over Argentina at the men's World Cup last year, replaced Corinne Diacre after key players refused to play under her and will hope to pull off another miracle by turning the team into world champions.

There have been 195 ACL injuries across women soccer’s top leagues, according to the ACL Women Football Club. “It’s not a coincidence I think that you get Leah and Beth injured after the Euros last summer,” said Arsenal star Miedema. Miedema believes this was an issue that world soccer’s governing body FIFA must address. European soccer’s governing body, UEFA, referenced to CNN the Women’s Health Expert Panel it established, which has a “high priority” researching ACL injuries.

Fast-forward to the upcoming Women’s World Cup, which starts on July 20 in Australia and New Zealand, and a host of the game’s best players will also be absent because of an injury which appears to be endemic in the women’s game. But why are so many female soccer players suffering from the same injury? “At elite clubs in the men’s game, players have access to exceptional academies and training facilities from a very young age. Beth Mead starred for England in its Euro 2022 victory but will be missing the Women's World Cup. LONDON, May 4 (Reuters) - Arsenal's Austria defender Laura Wienroither is the latest player in the women's game to rupture an anterior cruciate ligament after the club confirmed her injury on Thursday. Wienroither, 24, sustained the injury in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final defeat by Wolfsburg on Monday. She is the fourth Arsenal player to rupture an ACL this season after England captain Leah Williamson, England forward Beth Mead and Netherlands striker Vivianne Miedema. Studies have found women in sports that involve sudden deceleration or changing direction such as soccer are up to six times more likely to suffer an ACL injury than men. The prevalence of injuries in women's soccer in recent times has led to calls for better research.

Euro clubs' body wary of early Women's World Cup call-ups

April 27 (Reuters) - The European Club Association (ECA) said it is concerned about the "current widespread practice" of national federations calling up players for the Women's World Cup before the mandatory release period starts. The mandatory release date for the tournament is July 10, which is 10 days before the event kicks off in Australia and New Zealand. "The issue of early call-ups is a hangover from the game in its amateur form and is detrimental to the future success and growth of women's football." Several top players, including England captain Leah Williamson and Netherlands forward Vivianne Miedema, have been ruled out of the World Cup due to serious injuries. Williamson suffered the injury during the first half of the team’s game against Manchester United on Wednesday, according to the club’s statement. The noise around the situation is loud and I need some quiet to let it all sink in,” Williamson wrote. “I think it’s way too common in the women’s game. The 2023 Women’s World Cup runs from July 20 through to August 20 and will be held in Australia and New Zealand.
