The number of pregnant women forced to travel farther to deliver their babies — or go without prenatal care entirely — is growing. A March of Dimes report published Tuesday found that over a third of U.S. counties (35.1%) are what the group calls “maternity care deserts,” meaning they don't have a single doctor, nurse, midwife or medical center specializing in maternity care. During 2021 and 2022, about 1 in 25 hospital maternity wards closed, the report found. States in which pregnant women had to travel the farthest to seek medical maternity care included Alaska, Hawaii and Montana. The closest place with maternity care was two hours away from her home in Montana.

The Summary Studies have found that wildfire smoke negatively affects brain health. “A lot of the research on wildfire smoke has historically focused on our lungs and our hearts,” said Stephanie Cleland, an assistant professor at Simon Fraser University who studies the health impacts of wildfire smoke. Scientists think the reason wildfire smoke affects the brain is that the tiny particles within it can cross the barrier between the bloodstream and the brain, causing inflammation in the central nervous system. Other research published the same year showed that exposure to wildfire smoke during the school year reduced students’ test scores relative to a year with no smoke. “Last summer completely changed our conversation around who’s exposed to wildfire smoke,” she said.

The CFPB said it was imposing penalties on the bank for illegally charging customers for unnecessary auto insurance policies. “Fifth Third Bank demanded borrowers pay for coverage they did not need or else face delinquency, additional fees and repossessions,” the agency said in a statement. For its illegal auto insurance activities, the bank must pay $5 million in redress to affected customers, the CFPB said. In 2015, the bank was ordered to pay $18 million to harmed Black and Hispanic borrowers in what CFPB charged was discriminatory auto loan pricing. And it was ordered to pay $3 million to harmed consumers and a $500,000 penalty for illegal credit card practices.

The ALICE Essentials Index, which includes housing, childcare, food, transportation, healthcare, and technology costs, has risen by a projected 7.3% annually from 2021 to 2023; comparatively, CPI has risen by 6.1%. The ALICE Essentials Index for rural areas was slightly higher than that for urban areas, at 7.5% and 7.2%, respectively. "Long before everybody else was upset about inflation, ALICE was dealing with inflation," Hoopes said. Heat-related emergency room visits spiked this week in regions of the United States that had been hit the hardest by the heat wave, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Across swaths of New England, the Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic states, there were “extremely high” rates of heat-related illnesses this week, the C.D.C.’s heat and health tracker showed. The data used emergency room visits associated with the heat to determine the rise in heat-related illnesses, showing which areas had visits that exceeded the 95th percentile of what is typical there. In New England, the number of visits climbed from 57 per 100,000 on Monday, the first day of the heat wave, to 833 on Thursday — the highest rate in the country all week. Caribou, Maine, reached 96 degrees this week, tying the highest temperature ever recorded there.

Almost 72 million people across the country were under warnings of extreme heat Monday morning, the National Weather Service said. With Thursday's seasonal solstice taking place amid a weeklong heat wave expected for the East Coast and the Midwest, the summer of 2024 is coming in hot. Extreme heat warnings were in place for Chicago, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston, New York City and Albany, New York. The weather service office for Pittsburgh said it "could be the most impactful heat wave of the 21st century." The weather service is also on the lookout for any possible tropical storms developing in the Gulf, it said.

A record-breaking heat wave with a combination of humidity and temperatures well into the 90s will descend on cities in the Midwest and Northeast this week in what is expected to be a dangerous weather system days before summer officially begins, forecasters said. “The duration of this heat wave is notable and potentially the longest experienced in decades for some locations,” the National Weather Service said on social media on Sunday. In Pennsylvania, temperatures in Philadelphia, Allentown and Reading are expected to reach 95 degrees or higher for five consecutive days, a streak that has not occurred since July 2022, August 1953 and July 2011, respectively, according to the Weather Service office in Mount Holly, N.J. The severe heat was rapidly developing ahead of a low pressure system and spreading to the central Plains, Great Lakes region and Ohio Valley on Sunday, the Weather Service said.

Some areas could endure the longest heat wave they’ve seen in decades, the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center said. Tens of millions of people who aren’t used to heat this intense will be sweating in temperatures well into the 90s this week. Through the rest of the week, the most extreme heat risk is in place from the Great Lakes into the Northeast, according to the National Weather Service. Humidity will also join forces with extreme heat to create triple-digit heat indices – measurements of how hot the human body feels – in some areas. Chicago residents could feel heat indices between 95 and 105 degrees through next week, the NWS in Chicago warned.
