The budget airline plans to cut some 340 pilots and flight attendants from its busy Atlanta base, CNBC first reported Wednesday. Southwest was the second-largest operator in Atlanta behind Delta Air Lines, leaving customers will fewer choices out of the world's busiest airport. The airline also left four airports in August as part of a cost-cutting and restructuring plan, including Bellingham International Airport in Washington state, Mexico's Cozumel International Airport, Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and Syracuse Hancock International Airport in New York. A former Southwest employee created and sold fake travel vouchers, according to a June 5 indictment. The airline usually issues Southwest Luv Vouchers to customers affected by delays and other circumstances. Between February and June 2022, the former employee allegedly created vouchers for a value of nearly $2 million. A customer service representative for Southwest Airlines at Midway Airport in Chicago when he allegedly created and sold fraudulent travel vouchers for a value of nearly $2 million. Federal prosecutors allege that Martin, who worked at Southwest from November 2018 to June 2022, used his employee credentials to create fake customer names and generate fake travel vouchers of the kind Southwest issues to customers who have experienced delays, cancellations, and other unfortunate circumstances.

Fixes to the Southwest Airlines' crew scheduling system that failed spectacularly during the service meltdown in December will be live "tomorrow," said Andrew Watterson, Southwest's chief operating officer, during a Senate Commerce Committee hearing on Thursday. "With regard to this event, our crew scheduling system had a particular fault," Watterson said. "Tomorrow, the fix will go in, it will be live on our production system. But Watterson cautioned the scheduling system was not the only thing that failed and caused the problems. "We believe our winter operations resiliency was the root cause, and that will take longer to address," he said.

Southwest canceled thousands more flights on Wednesday amid an ongoing wave of travel chaos. The airline's struggles have started spilling over into the travel industry as a whole. Stranded passengers are facing rental car shortages and ongoing delays. "The first thing JetBlue tells me is to cancel my travel," Rivera said. The JetBlue representative told her that displaced Southwest passengers have been snatching up available tickets, inadvertently displacing JetBlue passengers who need to rebook after their own delays or cancellations.

On the busy day-after-Christmas travel day, Southwest Airlines canceled more than 2,700 flights, frustrating passengers across the country. Overall, around 3,900 flights were canceled within, into or out of the U.S. on Monday, according to the flight-tracking website FlightAware. Southwest had 2,893 flights canceled at one point Monday, or 70% of its schedule, according to the site. On Saturday, Sunday and Monday combined, over 8,200 flights into, out of or within the U.S. were canceled, according to FlightAware. The issue with Southwest flights also caught the attention of the Transportation Department, which called the airline's performance unacceptable.

More than 90% of Tuesday’s US flight cancellations are Southwest, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Southwest warned that it would continue canceling flights until it could get its operations back on track. Similar to this month’s service mayhem, Southwest fared far worse than its competitors last October. While Southwest canceled hundreds of flights in the days following the peak of October’s disruption, competitors quickly returned to normal service.
