Investors should take hold of SM Energy ahead of its earnings report, according to TD Cowen. Analyst Gabe Daoud upgraded his rating on the stock to buy from hold. Heading into its third-quarter results at the end of the month, Daoud expects the company to beat Wall Street's expectations. "SM remains a technical leader in the Midland Basin with '23 oil productivity ranking first among operators and '24 not far behind," Daoud said. On top of that, he noted that return-of-capital initiatives, such as dividend increases or share buybacks specifically, could drive more upside.

Oil prices fall as U.S. rate cut fails to boost market sentiment

A pump jack operates in front of a drilling rig at sunset in an oil field in Midland, Texas. Oil prices fell in Asian trading on Thursday after a larger-than-expected Federal Reserve interest rate cut sparked concerns about the U.S. economy. The U.S. central bank cut interest rates by half a percentage point on Wednesday, suggesting the Fed saw a slowing job market. That view appeared to outweigh the boost that interest rate cuts usually bring to economic activity. China's industrial output growth also slowed to a five-month low last month, and retail sales and new home prices weakened further.

Oil extends losses as strong dollar weighs on commodities markets

Oil prices fell in early Asian trade on Monday for a second straight session, weighed down by a stronger dollar after concerns of higher-for-longer interest rates resurfaced and cooled investors' risk appetite. Brent crude futures slid 40 cents, or 0.5%, to $84.84 a barrel by 0036 GMT, after settling down 0.6% on Friday. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were at $80.34 a barrel, down 39 cents, or 0.5%. In Ecuador, state oil company Petroecuador has declared force majeure over deliveries of Napo heavy crude for exports following the shutdown of a key pipeline and oil wells due to heavy rains, sources said on Friday. In the U.S., operating oil rigs fell three to 485 last week, their lowest since January 2022, Baker Hughes said in its report on Friday.

But he soon realized that although he had two and a half years to save for the trip, he wouldn’t have enough, so he increased the deposit to $150. “This went on for a while before my wife noticed that there seemed to be money from my paycheck unaccounted for,” Mr. Shahin said. So his wife, Martha Shahin, knew how much he was paid and how much was deducted. She began asking to see his pay stub, but Mr. Shahin always had an excuse — he didn’t know where it was, he must have left it at work. Mr. Shahin, now 66, finally confessed that he was depositing money into a secret travel fund.

Crude oil futures bounced back Thursday after a three-day decline but are still on pace for a weekly loss. U.S. crude oil is down 2.4% for the week while Brent, the global benchmark, is down 1.8%. Traders are also worried about a buildup in global oil inventories after a mild winter in parts of the Northern Hemisphere, Staunovo told clients in a note Thursday. Nevertheless, UBS sees the oil market in a deficit and is forecasting Brent will rise to $91 per barrel in coming months. The bank also sees healthy demand growth of 1.5 million barrels per day in 2024, above the long-term growth rate of 1.2 million barrels per day.

A woman found living in the rooftop sign of a grocery store in Michigan had set up the small space to call home with flooring, a Keurig coffee maker and a computer, the authorities said. The unidentified 34-year-old woman, who was not formally charged with anything, had been living there for about a year, Brennon Warren, a spokesman for the Midland Police Department in Midland, Mich., said in an email. The police were called by store staff members on April 23 around 2 p.m. after contractors who were working on the roof found her, Officer Warren said. It is unclear how she was getting up and into the triangular sign on the rooftop of a Family Fare store, he said, estimating the building to be between 15 to 20 feet tall and the space where she had been living to be about 10 to 15 feet in length, five feet wide and approximately six to eight feet “at its highest peak.”

CNN —The Biden administration on Thursday moved one step closer to enacting a rule requiring people who sell firearms online and at gun shows to conduct background checks on their potential customers. The finalized rule aims to close what gun control advocates call the “gun show loophole” by increasing the requirements to obtain a federal firearms license, or FFL, by more specifically defining what it means to be “engaged in the business” of selling firearms. By making the term more definitive, the Justice Department has said it aims to better regulate the market and encourage higher compliance with the federal background check requirement. “I do believe countless families and communities will be spared the horror and the heartbreak of gun violence by this new rule.”The finalized rule, which will appear in the Federal Registry, will go into effect in 30 days. Already, the rule is facing criticism from conservative lawmakers and gun rights advocates, including the National Rifle Association.

The West Texas Intermediate contract for May delivery gained 28 cents, or 0.33%, to settle at $85.43 a barrel. Crude futures are at their highest level since late October. Some members of OPEC and allies led by Russia, called OPEC+, are voluntarily cutting 2.2 million barrels per day of production through at least the second quarter. Oil prices advance as investors reassess U.S. inventories data
  + stars: | 2024-03-28 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Global oil prices edged up on Thursday, recovering from two consecutive sessions of decline, as investors reassessed the latest U.S. crude oil and gasoline inventories data and returned to buying mode. In the prior session, oil prices were under pressure after U.S. crude oil and gasoline inventories rose unexpectedly last week driven by a rise in crude imports and sluggish gasoline demand, according the Energy Information Administration data. "We... expect U.S. inventories to rise less than normal in reflection of a global oil market in a slight deficit. This will likely hand support to the Brent crude oil price going forward," Bjarne Schieldrop, chief commodities analyst at SEB Research, said in a note. Lower interest rates support oil demand.
