U.S. bank Citi refreshed its list of "highest conviction ideas" for Europe and recommended a specific trading strategy that investors can adopt right now. "The focus is on bottom-up ideas," Citi's analysts wrote in an Apr. The list also "highlights liquid names in which investors can build positions," the Citi analysts added. Citi's focus list delivered returns of 3.4% over the last 12 months and 5.4% in the past three months. Citi has a target price of £200 on the LSE-listed stock, giving it 34% potential upside.

Goldman Sachs said the stock market performance has been driven by company specific factors rather than the macroeconomic environment, and the Wall Street firm identified a host of names that it said offer the most attractive microeconomic setups. The investment bank used a so-called " dispersion score " for each S & P 500 stock to identify "the best stock-picking opportunities going forward." It's important to note that stocks with high dispersion scores reflect a large alpha opportunity , but not necessarily in one direction or the other, meaning a stock can have outsized outperformance or underperformance. Goldman found that among the 11 S & P 500 sectors, consumer discretionary and technology groupings offer the best stock picking opportunities based on their dispersion scores, while real estate and utilities have the lowest scores, hence less chance of generating alpha. Stocks with the highest dispersion scores in the benchmark stock index are Monster Beverage , DexCom , Akamai Technologies , Centene and Align Technology , according to Goldman.

The bitcoin rally was catalyzed by microeconomic factors at the end of 2023, but may have recently fused into the more macroeconomic-fueled gold rally, according to Wolfe Research. On Friday, it hit record highs for a fourth consecutive session. Bitcoin has also been trading at record highs this week, after hitting new all-time highs on both Tuesday and Friday. Additionally, however, "positive factors for bitcoin have lined up over the past year," Stephanie Roth, Wolfe's chief economist, said in a note Thursday. Gold is widely seen as a safe haven asset and inflation hedge, a narrative many also ascribe to bitcoin, sometimes known as "digital gold."

This year's broader market rally isn't over just yet, according to Citi. "We look for further S & P 500 upside in the year ahead. Citi set a year-end target of 5,100 for the S & P 500, dependent on a $245 earnings per share estimate for the index. The S & P 500 , meanwhile, is up nearly 20% in 2023. They said rising costs kept the board from expanding amenities residents wanted, such as a shared composting system. jhorrocks/Getty ImagesRising price for peace of mindIn the constellation of household costs, insurance is often one of the lesser-noticed line items. But recently the rising cost of repairs and the frequency of damaging weather events have made the deal go sour. Rising insurance costs could inflict more pain on another bruised area of the economy: housing affordability. For this reason, insurance companies could decline to cover them or require costly upgrades before agreeing to a policy.

This new-look cap table leaves the U.S. much more vulnerable to the vagaries of foreign investors than before. In a crisis, foreign investors would rush to buy even more U.S. debt. Reuters GraphicsA less orthodox option would be to invest in emerging markets instead. The last time net equity investment in the U.S. NIIP dipped close to negative territory was as the dot-com bubble was deflating in 2001. In the next six years the U.S. saw net equity outflows equivalent to nearly 30% of GDP.

The US economy is showing signs of resilience, including from the labor market and consumer spending. The labor market has remained robust, steady economic growth is still there, and consumers have yet to buckle. "I think there's still risks gradually accumulating in the economy," Kimbrough said. Microeconomic factors seem to be dominating the market action in 2023, and Goldman Sachs is offering up some opportunities to capture the greatest alpha in this environment. Options pricing also reflects expectations for elevated return dispersion over the near term, Goldman Sachs chief U.S. equity strategist David Kostin said in a Friday note. Consensus expectations call for the median stock on the list to rise 24%, versus 11% expected for the median S & P 500 stock. "These stocks ultimately present alpha generating opportunities for investors to apply directional views on fundamental outlooks or near-term catalysts," Kostin wrote. Goldman also included solar stock Enphase Energy , down more than 49% year to date.

Financial markets now expect interest-rate cuts as soon as May or June, with the Fed policy rate seen ending the year a full percentage point lower than it is now. Trader bets and actual Fed policy decisions often diverge, and analysts caution against taking the market view as gospel. Interest rates should pause until the degree of demand destruction can be evaluated.”WILD SWINGSExpectations for the U.S. central bank’s next move have swung wildly in recent days. Now, with the banking crisis seemingly rekindled and banking stocks again under pressure, traders are looking for one more Fed rate hike if that, and then a string of interest-rate reductions, with the rate ending this year in a 3.5%-3.75% range. “It’s conceivable that we’ve seen the peak in market interest rates this cycle,” said John Lynch, chief investment officer for Comerica Wealth Management.
A Bankrate survey that took place from January 20 to January 23 asked about how a respondent's emergency savings compared to these savings a year ago. About 4 in 10 US adults have fewer emergency savings than they did just a year prior, according to the survey conducted by SSRS. But not everyone has seen their emergency savings fall from where they stood a year ago. "Many have resorted to tapping their emergency savings if they have it, or have taken on credit card debt, or some combination. And emergency savings is money of course that should be highly liquid for when and if they need to tap that money supply."
India is expected to formally displace China as the world’s most populous country. In fact, 2023 could be the year India finally emerges as a global economic heavyweight. For that, thank the cumulative effect of solid economic growth, microeconomic reform and a changed geopolitical environment that has the West more eager than ever to draw India into its orbit. Just this week, nine Democratic senators and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen came through India, the latter for a summit of the Group of 20 economies, which India is hosting this year. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Secretary of State Antony Blinken are close behind.

The level surpassed the $73,283 record reached earlier this year in March, which it had more recently dipped below. The continued strength in the labor market will will put pressure on companies to keep using price as a lever to make back some of the margin lost to labor costs. This approach to offering more pay doesn't tie them into salary increases which can't be easily reversed, and also does not factor into the wage inflation trend for long. But for now Powell is stuck with a labor market that isn't relenting to Fed policy as quickly as hoped. "We do see a very, very strong labor market, one where we haven't seen much softening, where job growth is very high, where wages are very high.

This week, Sarah Belle Lin, an Insider fellow, interviews Eugene Kim, our Amazon reporter and chief tech correspondent, about covering the US's largest online retailer. You're an Amazon reporter whose expertise lies in Amazon, Jeff Bezos, Andy Jassy, e-commerce, and cloud computing. I started out as an enterprise-tech reporter in 2014 covering business software like Salesforce, Oracle, and Dropbox. We didn't have a full-time reporter covering Amazon at the time because it wasn't as big. Both of those things have been integral to Amazon's corporate culture for a very long time, so it's fair to say they are key parts to the company's success.
WASHINGTON, Sept 28 (Reuters) - World Bank President David Malpass on Wednesday warned that it could take years for global energy production to diversify away from Russia, prolonging the risk of stagflation, or a period of low growth and high inflation. In a speech at Stanford University, Malpass said there was an increased likelihood of recession in Europe, while China's growth was slowing sharply, with grave consequences for developing countries. Addressing the current "perfect storm" of rising interest rates, high inflation and slowing growth - and undoing the reversals in development required new macro- and microeconomic approaches, Malpass said. Put another way, this hike has been de-risked but additional aggressive rate increases in the near term likely have not. The market wants to understand at what terminal rate the Fed will hold. If the Fed goes with a 75-basis-point hike Wednesday, that would bring the target range for the central bank's key fed funds rate to 3%-3.25%. On that note, current estimates for S & P 500 earnings are roughly $222 in 2022 and $240 for 2023.
