Bitcoin could hit a fresh all-time high ahead of the presidential election, Standard Chartered says. Standard Chartered estimates bitcoin could hit $73,800 in the next few weeks. In new research, head of digital asset research Geoff Kendrick estimated that the token could hit $73,800 before November's US presidential election, a 12% gain from current levels. Second, SAB 121 exemptions go hand-in-hand with MicroStrategy's announced plan to become a "bitcoin bank," offering bitcoin capital market instruments down the road. In Kendrick's mind, the outcome of the presidential election is secondary to these bullish forces, with both Trump and Harris victories boding well for the token.

"On a relative basis vs. BTC, the stock is at its highest level since 2019," Ginsberg added. Bitcoin is up 41% for the year, while MicroStrategy has gained 193%. MicroStrategy, which tends to be a high beta play on the cryptocurrency, is expected to follow.

Billionaire bitcoin investor Michael Saylor and the company he founded, MicroStrategy , will pay $40 million to settle a tax fraud lawsuit brought by the Washington D.C. Attorney General, the AG's office announced Monday. The D.C. attorney general charged both Saylor and MicroStrategy with tax evasion, claiming that the company helped its founder disguise his D.C. residency so that he could avoid paying higher income taxes. MicroStrategy also allegedly failed to pay the corporate taxes required for a company employing D.C. residents, of which Saylor was only one of several. The original suit against Saylor was brought in 2022 by former D.C. attorney general Karl Racine. From 2006 to 2008, Saylor bought three luxury D.C. condos that he later renovated into a single complex that he called the "Trigate."

Michael Saylor, chairman and chief executive officer at MicroStrategy, during an interview at the Bitcoin 2023 conference in Miami Beach, Florida, US, on Thursday, May 18, 2023. MicroStrategy founder and bitcoin evangelist Michael Saylor entered into a stock-sale plan with his company last summer that allowed him to unload up to 400,000 shares in the first four months of 2024. With the plan more than 90% of the way to completion, Saylor has netted about $370 million from this year's stock sales, thanks to the stratospheric rise in value of MicroStrategy, which is effectively a bitcoin holding company. Saylor is the largest MicroStrategy shareholder, with Class B holdings worth about $2.3 billion. At the end of 2023, Saylor owned another 400,000 Class A shares due to an option he received in 2014.

"In our mind, these debt-funded bitcoin purchases add froth to the current crypto rally by raising the risk of severe deleveraging in a potential downturn in the future," he added. MicroStrategy raised $604 million from the sale of converts on March 18, and another $800 million on March 8 . The latest purchases mark an acceleration from the fourth quarter pace, when MicroStrategy bought more than $1 billion of bitcoin. Originally launched as an enterprise business software company, Microstrategy has been buying bitcoin and holding them on its balance sheet since 2020. It largely trades as a proxy for the price of bitcoin, and in February of this year leaned into that, rebranding itself a Bitcoin development company.

Stocks finished mixed after a volatile session that saw big swings after the Fed meeting. Policymakers kept rates steady but indicated that two more increases could come later this year. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell also said rate cuts would be more appropriate "a couple of years out." Central bankers kept rates steady at 5%-5.25% but indicated in their "dot plot" projections that two more increases could come later this year, a more hawkish signal than what Wall Street anticipated. Meanwhile, policymakers will assess incoming data, including credit conditions that may have a role in tightening macroeconomic conditions, he added.
