Just ignore the word ‘tariff’ — it’s a tax

Especially when you hear words like “tariffs.”But, given the economy’s central importance in the 2024 race, it’s worth hammering on an Econ 101 fact: Tariffs are a tax on Americans. Very simply: When the US government decides to put a tariff (read: tax) on, say, Chinese goods, the actual money going to the US Treasury comes from the American company doing the importing. “To me, the most beautiful word in the dictionary is tariff,” Trump said at one point. But it’s important to judge Trump’s first-term trade policies and the Biden-Harris approach against context of the unprecedented tariff wave Trump is planning if he gets to Round Two. Bottom line: Tariffs might be a beautiful word to Trump’s ear, but he’s telling a fictional story about what they do in practice.

She took the rare step of answering questions in the town-hall style radio program — and got some tough ones about her commitment to the Black church and Black voters’ economic problems. On Wednesday, Harris will venture into the lion’s den on Fox News hoping to reach another important group of voters. Trump trails Harris among female voters in most polls and badly needs to narrow that gender gap with 20 days to go. Vice President Kamala Harris participates in an interview with radio host Charlamagne Tha God, in Detroit on October 15, 2024. But Harris hit back on Charlamagne Tha God’s “The Breakfast Club,” saying that Black voters need to think carefully about the future.

New York CNN —Bloomberg News took disciplinary action Monday against a “number” of its staffers after the outlet broke an embargo last week on news of the release of several American prisoners held by Russia, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. In a memo sent to the outlet’s staff on Monday and obtained by CNN, Bloomberg editor-in-chief John Micklethwait wrote that an initial story, published at 7:41 a.m. News organizations, including CNN, had agreed to hold on to news of the prisoners’ release so as not to endanger the process. Ahead of the prisoner swap, the White House had briefed reporters from multiple news organizations around 8 a.m. ET on the activity, with an embargo time on the news of later that day, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Bloomberg News’s editor in chief said on Monday that the publication had disciplined multiple journalists involved in breaking an embargo last week tied to the major prisoner swap, in what he said was “a clear violation of the editorial standards.”John Micklethwait, the newsroom’s top editor, said in an email to its staff that Bloomberg had disciplined the people after an investigation by the organization’s standards editor into how the embargo, which was set by the Biden administration, was broken. He said Bloomberg would “be reviewing our processes to ensure that failures like this don’t happen again.”The email did not specify what the disciplinary actions were or who they involved. Bloomberg published an article at 7:41 a.m. on Thursday detailing the complicated prisoner exchange that resulted in the release of Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for the The Wall Street Journal, and many others. Jennifer Jacobs, a senior White House reporter who had the first byline on the article, has left the company, according to two people with knowledge of the matter. An editor involved in the story was demoted, according to two other people.

Facing financial challenges and political division, several of America’s largest news organizations have turned over the reins to editors who prize relentless reporting on a budget. Will Lewis, a veteran of London’s Daily Telegraph and News UK, is now the chief executive of The Washington Post, where reporters have raised questions about his Fleet Street ethics. He recently ousted the paper’s American editor and replaced her with a former colleague from The Telegraph, dumbfounding American reporters who had never heard of him. Michael Bloomberg, a noted Anglophile, hired John Micklethwait (former editor of the London-based Economist) in 2015 to run Bloomberg News. Rupert Murdoch tapped Keith Poole (The Sun and The Daily Mail) to edit The New York Post in 2021, the same year that The Associated Press named an Englishwoman, Daisy Veerasingham, as its chief executive.

Bloomberg has laid off a handful in the newsroom as it shifts resources around in the organization. Bloomberg has done a rare layoff of a handful of people in its newsroom of 2,700, as it shifts resources around in the organization. In audio, Bloomberg shuttered its afternoon Boston radio program in June and replaced it with its Bloomberg Businessweek show. But Bloomberg Media is protected by its ownership by Michael Bloomberg's much larger financial information giant Bloomberg LP, whose key product, the Bloomberg Terminal, is widely used on Wall Street. Bloomberg Media CEO Scott Havens said the company grew revenue 16% in 2022, marking its 10th quarter of advertising growth.

Bloomberg LP plans to hire 1,000 people this year as other media and finance companies slash staff. Bloomberg LP is on a hiring tear while other media, finance, and tech companies slash staff amid the softening economy. Mike Bloomberg's software, data, and media company is known for hiring in downturns, an advantage of being a privately held company. Bloomberg also announced it's creating a new team of product and tech workers under news-side exec Chris Collins as chief product and technology officer. The goal is to improve the user experience and discoverability of news on the Bloomberg Terminal, Bloomberg editor in chief John Micklethwait wrote in a staff memo.
Twitter is planning to require users to pay to keep their verification. When reports emerged that the Elon Musk-operated Twitter planned to require users to pay to keep their blue verification badges, a question blossomed in newsrooms: Would media companies front the bill for their reporters? One media company, however, would certainly cover the cost of Twitter verification: Puck. Musk wrote on Twitter last week that he planned to charge $8 per month for a "Twitter Blue" subscription that would include verification. Long considered Twitter power users, journalists make up a large contingent of verified users on the platform, along with celebrities, organizations, and brands.
The South Korean government's YouTube channel was breached to stream cryptocurrency videos. The cyberattacker renamed the channel "SpaceX Invest" and broadcast an interview with Elon Musk. It's the third YouTube channel run by South Korea's government to be hacked in the last two weeks. The Korea Tourism Organization's YouTube channel was breached twice — once on Thursday and once on Friday — and was suspended until Sunday, JoongAng Ilbo reported. Meanwhile, the YouTube channel of South Korea's National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art was also hacked on August 29 to stream a video about cryptocurrencies, the outlet wrote.
