michelle goldbergI mean, I’m a huge Walz fan, and I was worried. ross douthatSo, yeah, I mean, I’m having made the case that this pick makes sense in vibes terms. michelle goldbergYeah, I don’t think that he necessarily overperforms among conservative voters strictly defined. You don’t think that there’s a part of the country that just finds joy like a really refreshing change? I’m going there.

Opinion Meet the Flip-Flop Club: 7 Republicans Who Kissed the RingClaire Merchlinsky/The New York Times; Images by Mary981, via Getty ImagesYou could call it a glorious moment of party unity. Either way, the Republican Party’s nominating convention was an impressive show of force by its undisputed leader, Donald Trump, who has vanquished all comers to rally his party around the MAGA flag. Heading into the primary elections, plenty of Republicans were desperately casting about for a Trump alternative, and plenty of challengers were auditioning for the position. But you can’t fight the base, and as it became clear that Republican voters were going to stick with Mr. Trump, his skeptics and critics fell into line one by one. is Mr. Trump’s party, now more than ever.

The former president was expected to offer unity in his nomination acceptance speech. But after a wild week, his speech revealed the same old Donald Trump. In this episode, the hosts debate: Is Trump a “man of destiny”? (A full transcript of this audio essay will be available within 24 hours of publication in the audio player above.)

Following the horrific shooting at the Pennsylvania rally, Trump and his campaign team have been talking about calling for unity and saying they’re going to focus more on that. Vance is not a unity pick. He is not who you would reach for if you were really trying to bring together lots of different pieces of the electorate. He tends to be a partisan, feisty figure, so I will be interested to see how they balance these things in his speech. I’m watching it on TV, like God intended.

Patrick Healy: Frank, Michelle, David, the Republican convention is opening on Monday night just 48 hours after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. How do you think the shooting will shape or change the convention, and Trump? The key player here will be Trump, of course, and his nomination speech may well be the most-watched address in a generation. Patrick: How far do you think Republicans will take it, Frank? I’m watching to see how much further Republican politicians themselves push that kind of thinking and accusation.

“The dam is breaking!” Have the Democrats reached their “break glass in case of emergency” moment? This week, Michelle, Ross and Lydia dig into the Democratic Party fissures, consider what could happen if President Biden refuses to bow out, and debate just how much this moment mirrors the Republican scramble against Trump in 2016. There’s one leader who would, though, if he felt moved to intervene in the Democratic Party’s current pickle concerning President Biden. And he is the rare leader Mr. Biden might just listen to: Chuck Schumer. We know Mr. Schumer is feeling a bit twitchy about the situation. Mr. Schumer speaks not just for himself, but for the chamber’s Democratic caucus, to which Mr. Biden proudly belonged for so many years. His leadership style relies on consensus building, and as yet there is nothing approaching consensus among Democrats about whether Mr. Biden should be pressured to leave the race.

Which has me thinking back to one of the viral moments from her husband’s 2020 campaign. On the night of Super Tuesday, as Joe Biden was delivering his celebratory speech at a rally in Los Angeles, two anti-dairy demonstrators rushed the stage, only to run smack up against the protective wall of Dr. Biden. There is an amazing photo of her grimacing and holding a protester at bay by the wrists as Mr. Biden looks on with concern. That is who Dr. Biden is, fiercely and reflexively, when it comes to protecting and supporting her husband. And those looking to recruit her to encourage Mr. Biden to reconsider his presidential bid may sorely misunderstand her — and their marriage.

On the “Matter of Opinion” post-debate episode, hosts Ross Douthat and Michelle Cottle are joined by Ezra Klein, who says, “At some point Democrats have to decide if they want to try to win this election, or it is simply too uncomfortable for them to do anything but be on this train as it derails.”Below is a lightly edited transcript of their conversation. In American politics, there is a difference between being old and seeming old — especially when appearing on TV. On TV, he looks ready to burst through your screen — which I find unsettling, but his fans really seem to enjoy. Then there’s Joe Biden, whose urgent challenge in the high-stakes presidential debate on Thursday is precisely this: how to be old on TV without seeming old — or worse, elderly. Mr. Biden is an effective president, but most people don’t watch how someone looks, sounds and moves on TV and think purely about his policy record. Coming across like an old friend, an old hand or even a grumpy old man can have plenty of upside, conveying warmth, experience, humor or a self-deprecating touch.

“Man, I hit a wall,” Lauren Boebert said, sounding ready to pack it in. Hosted by a local farm bureau, the discussion was about agriculture and energy policy, and Ms. Boebert and the other five Republicans in the primary had been warned to keep it civil. Even when Ms. Boebert got in a dig at President Biden or the “weaponized federal government,” the low-energy crowd wasn’t feeling it. Her go-to zinger — “My least favorite product that’s made in China is Joe Biden” — drew barely a chuckle. And one of the surprises during my time with Ms. Boebert was how many awkward or uncertain moments she seemed to have — at voter events, in debates or simply standing unnoticed in a crowd.

And what everyone sort of expected to happen seems to be roughly what’s happening, which is that the populist right has consolidated a lot of support. Marjorie Taylor Greene seems even thirstier for attention than usual. Days later Ms. Greene dialed up the lunacy, claiming knowledge of a deep state plot to assassinate Donald Trump. “The Biden DOJ and FBI were planning to assassinate Pres Trump and gave the green light. Ms. Greene was just running wild with new details about the government’s 2022 efforts to recover the piles of documents Mr. Trump hoarded at Mar-a-Lago and spinning out a bonkers conspiracy theory. For weeks this spring, her threats against Mr. Johnson had reporters swarming all over her like flies on … honey.

Have you all noticed the Republican stars and wannabes showing up at Donald Trump’s trial? For its part, Team Trump may just be happy to have some respectable, unindicted players on Mr. Trump’s side. OK, Mr. Paxton doesn’t strictly meet those criteria, but you get my point. And of the many sordid ways Mr. Trump sets himself apart, his crew of henchmen is a doozy. Michael Cohen deserves top billing with his juicy court appearances this week, as Mr. Trump’s former fixer shared the nitty-gritty of how to keep your boss’s alleged extramarital encounters from blowing up a presidential campaign.

And yet I think many of us now feel we know a little too much about Kristi Noem, one of the more aggressive contestants in the MAGA pageant to be Donald Trump’s running mate. Second, when it comes to reminiscing about meeting world leaders, Ms. Noem has a touch of George Santos about her. But what was Ms. Haley really up to? According to Ms. Noem, Ms. Haley told her: “I’ve heard many good things about you. It was weird,” Ms. Noem recalls in her book telling her assistant.

Let’s just come right out and say what pretty much everyone keeping an eye on Marjorie Taylor Greene’s effort to blackmail House Speaker Mike Johnson is now thinking: Way to keep screwing this up, congresswoman! There was no way Johnson was going to get booted by Greene and her wee band of bomb throwers over the Ukraine funding bill. A majority of House Republicans are tired of her antics, and the Democrats were prepared to step in and save the speaker in the unlikely event he found himself in real danger from the wingers. Not that there was a snowball’s chance of that happening once the report started circulating that Donald Trump had basically told his Georgia minion to stand down. The MAGA king does not respond well to displays of disobedience.

Jr. took from both candidates but slightly more from President Biden. But our strong feeling is that the more that Democratic-leaning voters are exposed to R.F.K. Whereas the Biden campaign is focused on making a positive for case for President Biden, our focus really is just highlighting the negatives and vulnerabilities of the third-party, independent candidates, most notably R.F.K. Well, I basically agreed with President Biden’s remarks today about the campus protests. Which, come to think of it, is probably a bad sign for him. This is more or less the position several colleges have been spotlighting in recent weeks. That said, it seems unlikely Biden’s words will impress much of anyone, and certainly no one already worked up about the situation. Plenty of young people, upset by his policies in Gaza and further upset by the rough response to protesters by some colleges, are likely to see it as a weak dodge.

Let’s talk about why President Biden is spending three days in Pennsylvania this week — a lot of time by campaign standards. By now, you probably know that just a few swing states are pivotal to winning the White House in November. For Mr. Biden, the Keystone State is the most crucial. This fight is also personal: Mr. Biden is a native son of Pennsylvania who spent part of his childhood there, identifies with its working-class, regular-folk vibe and gets intuitively how the state is a microcosm for America. The goodish news for Mr. Biden is that he appears to be running neck-and-neck here with Mr. Trump, according to polling and campaign insiders, unlike in some other swing states where he is struggling a bit more.

On Saturday afternoon I drove out to eastern Pennsylvania, one of the big battlegrounds between President Biden and Donald Trump in this election, to attend Mr. Trump’s final rally before his criminal trial starts Monday. I was curious about the mood of Trump voters as this historic case gets underway. Instead, I found young women in sequins, older ladies in tutus, men sporting all manner of red-white-and-blue combos, and most everyone reveling in MAGA fellowship. It felt a little like the Whos down in Whoville gathering to sing after the Grinch stole Christmas. I didn’t run across anyone sweating the trial.
