The number of wealthy collectors surveyed who plan to purchase art in the next year fell to 43% from over half in 2023. The median spending on art by wealthy collectors remains stable at around $50,000 a year, according to the survey. Higher interest rates also raised the opportunity cost of buying art, since wealthy collectors could earn an easy 5% or more from cash and Treasuries. Just as in the classic-car market, the art market is going through a generational shift that's created a mismatch between supply and demand. According to the survey, the high end of the art market, or works priced at $10 million or more, was the strongest before 2022.

Firefighters responded to a transformer fire that began in an electrical vault next to the jewelry store’s 5th Avenue location in Manhattan. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kim Kardashian were interviewed by the FBI in 2018 and 2019, Bloomberg reported. The stars had received gifts from Jho Low, who is accused of masterminding the 1MDB scandal. Earlier, DiCaprio had to return a number of gifts given to him by Low, including an Oscar won by Marlon Brando. On Thursday, Bloomberg revealed previously undisclosed documents which show the FBI interviewing DiCaprio in 2018 about his relationship with Low. Representatives for Kardashian and DiCaprio did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, sent outside normal working hours.

Billionaire Joseph Lau sold $3.2 million worth of luxury handbags at a Sotheby's auction. Lau is a prolific collector who's purchased roughly 1,500 Hermès bags, Bloomberg reported. The collection included one Chanel bag and 76 Hermès bags, including both the iconic Birkin and Kelly styles. Lau's collection extends beyond handbags to diamonds — including a $53 million 12-carat blue diamond — and art by Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Bloomberg reported. Lau has auctioned off other pieces in his collection over the years, including $20 million worth of art and fine wine.

Among the highlights is Christie's Paul G. Allen Collection, which includes more than 150 pieces spanning 500 years. The collection, from the estate of the late Microsoft co-founder, includes works by Pablo Picasso, Georges Seurat, Paul Cezanne and Lucien Freud. Sotheby's Modern Art Evening Auction will be held on Nov. 14, followed by a Contemporary Evening Auction on Nov. 16. "There are so many amazing works on offer," Sotheby's head of impressionist and modern art for the Americas, Julian Dawes, said.
