For decades, Kamala Harris has been bolstered by a tight-knit group of female donors who rose up with her in Democratic politics. Quickly and quietly, her biggest supporters worked to rally support around her, creating enough momentum to effectively stamp out any opposition. On Sunday, when Mr. Biden announced his exit from the race and endorsed Vice President Harris, all the behind-the-scenes maneuvering appeared to pay off. The nation’s highest-ranking female officeholder, Ms. Harris rapidly picked up pivotal endorsements without attracting a single serious challenger. And while some major Democratic donors remained on the hunt for a non-Harris candidate on Monday, their efforts were appearing increasingly futile by the hour.

Michael R. Bloomberg, who is the former mayor of New York City and a Democratic megadonor, has donated nearly $20 million to support President Biden’s re-election campaign, a Bloomberg representative said. Mr. Bloomberg gave $19 million to Future Forward, the main Democratic super PAC supporting Mr. Biden, and $929,600 to the Biden Victory Fund, a joint fund-raising committee between Mr. Biden and the Democratic National Committee, said Howard Wolfson, the Education program lead at Bloomberg Philanthropies. “I stood with Joe Biden in 2020, and I am proud to do so again,” Mr. Bloomberg said in a statement. Mr. Bloomberg, who spent $1 billion of his own money on his failed presidential campaign in 2020, ultimately backed Mr. Biden in the Democratic primary that year and was a significant financial supporter of his campaign. He spent tens of millions of dollars through his political action committee on television ads supporting Mr. Biden and vowed to spend heavily in Florida, which then-President Donald J. Trump ultimately won by about three percentage points.

Journal Editorial Report: Pushback emerges among donors and employers. Images: AP Composite: Mark KellyThe barbaric attack by Hamas against Israel—the intentional slaughter of defenseless civilians, including children and babies, and the taking of hostages—should have been a unifying moment for America. Shamefully, it has become something else: a wake-up call about a crisis in higher education. It has been painful to watch students at elite colleges implicitly or explicitly endorse Hamas’s attack. They aren’t old enough to remember 9/11, and it’s clear they never learned its lesson: Intentionally targeting civilians for slaughter is inexcusable no matter the political circumstances.

New York’s civic leaders and arts administrators have spoken for two decades of the importance of building a haven of artistic creation on a site that had become synonymous with tragedy and death. “Here, on this very site, where so much loss and devastation took place,” said Michael R. Bloomberg, the billionaire former mayor who is chairman of the institution’s board, “the arts will bring a special sense of hope for the future.”Various ideas for the space percolated and fizzled for years, until Ronald O. Perelman, the billionaire businessman whom the building is named after, jump-started the project with a $75 million donation. It was Mr. Bloomberg who brought the project to fruition, contributing the largest portion of money: $130 million. Although it is Mr. Perelman’s name on the building, Mr. Bloomberg was at the center of much attention Thursday night, posing with benefactors and celebrities like Michael Douglas and Liev Schreiber on a red carpet at a cocktail hour before the performance, where guests sipped champagne and ate miniature cheeseburgers and pigs in blankets.

The city has done an admirable job of finding, in short order, shelter for the more than 100,000 asylum seekers who have arrived since last spring. Currently, the city is housing about 60,000 in some 200 sites, which has forced it to take over more than 140 hotels. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been pleading for months, to little avail, for federal support to deal with a flood of asylum seekers. Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, Denver and other cities are also experiencing an influx of asylum seekers who have no housing and no means of legally earning money. But ignoring it will only make it worse, while also elevating the political fortunes of xenophobes and eroding public support for immigration reform.

City Ballet also expanded its presence on Facebook, Instagram and other platforms, taking users behind the scenes of productions like “The Nutcracker” and posting interviews with dancers about their lives outside of ballet. Taylor, a finance leader and the partner of former New York City mayor Michael R. Bloomberg who, in 2021, became the first woman to serve as board chair in City Ballet’s history, worked to galvanize donors. When a potential board member expressed concern about joining “my grandmother’s dance company,” Taylor assured her that City Ballet was not beholden to the past, noting premieres by Peck and others. Donations rose significantly; the spring gala this year, which was attended by Bloomberg, took in $3.5 million, breaking records. As the financial picture improved, City Ballet worked to make its culture more collaborative and inclusive.

Michael R. Bloomberg, the founder of the financial data colossus Bloomberg L.P., announced a new chief executive and president on Monday, a possible indication of who will take over for him when he steps away from the company. Mr. Bloomberg, 81, also announced plans to appoint a new board to steer the business, a purveyor of data terminals that generates more than $12 billion in revenue annually. Vlad Kliatchko, 54, Bloomberg’s chief product officer, was appointed chief executive of the company, Mr. Bloomberg said in a memo to employees Monday. Mr. Bloomberg said in his memo that he had no plans to step away any time soon, noting that he was not taking on any new title. Neither Mr. Zammitt nor Mr. Kliatchko is replacing anyone at the company; the last chief executive at Bloomberg, Dan Doctoroff, stepped down in 2014.

Why It Matters: The mayor and the City Council have disagreed about how to address New York’s housing crisis. New York City is facing a housing crisis with soaring rents and record homelessness. Mr. Adams has received criticism from housing advocates for not moving quickly enough to create affordable housing, for supporting rent increases and for clearing homeless encampments. This one is the first by Mr. Adams since January 2022, when he vetoed a bill that would have increased penalties for zoning violations. But the mayor could sue the City Council to stop the laws — a tactic used by former Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg — or the City Council could sue the mayor if he chooses not to implement them.

Year after year, plans to build a cultural institution on the World Trade Center site percolated, only to then fizzle out. The International Freedom Center, the Joyce Theater, the Drawing Center, the Signature Theater, New York City Opera, a design by Frank Gehry — all were discussed as possibilities, but none went anywhere. Now, two decades after the 2003 master plan for ground zero called for a cultural component, a performing arts center is finally preparing to open there in September. The center, which will ultimately cost $500 million — more than twice what was projected in 2016 — is now on track to have a ribbon cutting on Sept. 13. “I can afford it,” Mr. Bloomberg said of his largess during a recent hard hat tour of the center.
