Two special prosecutors said Monday they will file a criminal obstruction of justice charge against a former Kansas police chief who directed warrant searches of a publisher and his newsroom over its retrieval of public information. As of Monday, prosecutors hadn't filed any criminal charges against former Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody. Why readers are falling for romantasy stories
  + stars: | 2024-02-28 | by ( Scottie Andrew | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +13 min
But when it comes to the literary flavor that’s dominating readers’ attention in 2024, it’s clear: “Romantasy” reigns supreme. When romantasy protagonists (such as dragon-riders, fairies and fallen angels) aren’t busy saving their worlds, they’re falling deeply in love — often with someone they formerly considered an adversary (the “enemies-to-lovers” trope does big numbers with romantasy readers). Romantasy is breaking through among readers who previously didn’t browse the fantasy aisle — and delighting readers who’ve loved it for years. We talk to authors, experts, longtime fans and recent converts about why readers are flocking to romantasy stories, in which treacherous quests are punctuated by steamy trysts. It’s what bookseller and romantasy fan Gideon Ariel calls “Swiss Army lit” — a subgenre that all readers can enjoy, from longtime fantasy nerds to newcomers.

A former fundraiser for U.S. Rep. George Santos pleaded guilty Tuesday to a federal wire fraud charge, admitting he impersonated a high-ranking congressional aide while raising campaign cash for the embattled New York Republican. Miele is the second campaign aide to Santos who took a plea deal in a federal probe. Federal prosecutors say Santos wired some of the money to his personal bank account and used the rest to pad his campaign coffers. Santos has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and has vowed to clear his name. Santos also recounted what he believed was an attempt by Miele last summer to try to rejoin Santos' campaign.

Clallam County in Washington State is far from Washington, D.C. — almost as far as you can go without leaving the continental United States. It’s right on the border with Canada. It’s home to about 78,000 people and Olympic National Park. It’s home to Forks, perhaps best known as the setting of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” series. It’s also the home of a particular piece of political trivia.

“There was magic all around,” Miller writes. “The politics of alien conspiracy soon dominated political discourse and bid fair to wipe out any other issue. The novel was inspired by witch hunts that took place in East Anglia, England, in the 1640s, where Meyer, who was born in Canada, now lives. From the outset, we see Martha torn between a belief in omens and more mainstream Christianity. “Two bad omens; but what was she to make of them?” Meyer writes.

An epic origin story, a charismatic leader, a generational saga: Is this the description of a fantasy novel, or a religion’s history? For Mormon authors, the line is blurry. Drawing inspiration from their religion, Mormon writers have filled young adult best-seller lists with fantasy and sci-fi novels, Abby Aguirre reported for The Times. First, the church, officially called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, encourages members to become strong readers and public speakers from a young age. The religion also embraces the family-friendly entertainment that the Y.A.

Opinion | How Hip-Hop Became America’s Poetry

As a kid in the 1970s, even one attending private schools, I was directed to drive by poetry slowly now and then, but rarely to actually stop and take it in deeply. Today, while vanishingly few people are up for reciting poems such as Joyce Kilmer’s “Trees” or Tennyson’s “The Charge of the Light Brigade,” vast numbers can eagerly and effortlessly recite hip-hop lyrics. But true verse of the kind featured in hip-hop — poetry that does not rely on melody or harmony — centers the word alone. In contrast to the synergy of song and word, verse is an especially heightened form of language alone. Rap is verse poetry, in all of its verbal richness and rhythmic variety, a deft stylization of speech into art.

CNN —Prominent restaurateur and Shake Shack founder Danny Meyer announced he will be closing two New York City restaurants located in a hotel which has been repurposed as a shelter for the city’s growing migrant population. Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group said in a statement they “admire and respect Redbury’s decision,” and that Meyer has previously advocated for expedited work permits for asylum-seekers. The nationally known ones include Gramercy Tavern and Union Square Cafe. In March 2020, Meyer closed all of his 19 restaurants in New York. Currently, the Union Square Hospitality Group said the two restaurants it is closing are looking for a new location and for job placements for employees affected by the closures.

Opinion | What’s the Story With Colleen Hoover?

There are the novels the literary world acclaims and there are the novels people actually read. With rare exceptions, these books are written by women, for women. And for the past few years, these books have been written by Colleen Hoover. In 2022 alone, Hoover’s novels sold 14.3 million copies and in total, more than 24 million copies to date. As Hoover herself explained her popularity in an interview in The Times: “It’s not me.

Katie Meyer, a senior studying international relations and a team captain of Stanford’s soccer team, was found dead in her dorm room on March 1. The parents of Katie Meyer , a star Stanford University soccer player who died by suicide earlier this year, are suing the university, alleging its management of a potential disciplinary action led to her death. The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in the Superior Court of California in Santa Clara County, alleges Stanford administrators pursued unwarranted and “overly punitive” disciplinary action against Ms. Meyer for an incident that occurred months before her death. It also alleges they failed to respond appropriately to Ms. Meyer’s distressed response to the potential disciplinary action.
The judge tossed the case after the Jaguars filed a motion in July to dismiss the lawsuit, contending Lambo “is not a whistleblower or a victim of retaliation,” as he argued in the complaint. Lawsuit sought damages, back payIn the lawsuit, Lambo said that during a practice in August 2021, Meyer “kicked him in the leg, and used profanity to insult (him) and warn him to make his kicks. “Josh’s characterization of me and this incident is completely inaccurate, and there are eyewitnesses to refute his account,” Meyer told the paper. The Jaguars cut Lambo in October after the kicker missed all three of his field-goal attempts in the first three weeks of the 2021 season. The Jaguars fired Meyer in December 2021 after 13 games (2-11) in his first NFL coaching season.
