Trump vowed to clamp down on automakers building cars in Mexico on the campaign trail, and the prospect of new tariffs could force US automakers such as Tesla to make some hard choices about operational or planned factories in Mexico. Analysts told BI that the tariffs floated by Trump would deter automakers such as Tesla from investing in Mexico. TLAXCALA, Mexico — An explosion at a Simec-owned steel plant in Mexico’s central Tlaxcala state in the early hours of Wednesday killed at least 12 people, state authorities said. “At the plant of the steel complex located in the city of Apizaco, Tlaxcala, a liquid steel spill occurred with the loss of human lives, temporarily paralyzing operations,” the firm said in a statement. The state civil protection office said in a social media post that the blast was likely caused after smelting apparatus collapsed. Those killed were workers at the plant, the state prosecutor’s office told Reuters. However, molten steel, when it comes into contact with water, causes an explosion.

Two rapid-attribution studies released Tuesday found that human-caused global warming made Hurricane Helene stronger and wetter, elements that contributed to the storm's destructive power. A report from ClimaMeter, a consortium that analyzes extreme weather events, found that Helene’s rainfall totals and winds were strengthened by human-driven climate change, with the rainfall up to 20% heavier and winds up to 7% stronger. The consortium noted that elevated temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico — something climate scientists have been warning about for years — likely contributed to Helene's power. "Furthermore, we estimate that the observed rainfall was made up to 20 times more likely in these areas because of global warming," the report added. But rampant violence has marred the road toward one of the most consequential elections in Mexico's history. Violence against political figures has also persisted throughout this election cycle, resulting in a 150% increase in the number of victims of political violence since 2021, according to an analysis from Integralia, a public affairs consulting firm that researches political risk and other issues in Mexico. Home Efficiency Rebates program Conversely, the Home Efficiency Rebates program is technology-neutral, Saul Rinaldi said. Larger rebates flow to those who cut more energy, Saul Rinaldi said.
