The bitcoin rally is generating a false sense of security among investors, according to the strategist behind the so-called granddaddy of gold exchange-traded funds. State Street Global Advisors' George Milling-Stanley warns cryptocurrency plays don't offer the stability of gold. Milling-Stanley's comments came as his firm's SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) celebrated its 20-year anniversary this week. It is the world's largest physically backed gold ETF, and it's up more than 30% in 2024. "But they called it mining because they wanted to seem like gold — maybe take some of the aura away from the gold."

Russia has fired about 60 North Korean KN-23 missiles at Ukraine this year, according to a Ukrainian defense official. These less-sophisticated missiles are part of North Korea’s growing support to Moscow, which also includes about 11,000 North Korean soldiers deployed to Russia’s Kursk region. Strikes using North Korean missiles have killed at least 28 people and injured 213 this year, the Ukrainian prosecutor general told CNN. Ukrainian investigators found evidence that crucial components used in the North Korean missiles are produced by at least nine Western manufacturers. There are more than 250 companies whose components have been identified in North Korean missiles, according to CAR.

Four big reasons to own gold into 2025

On Friday, spot gold rose about 1% amid increasing tensions between Russia and Ukraine . Secondly, the global interest rate-cutting cycle will also stretch into 2025, which will serve as another driver of higher gold prices. Moreover, a push among central banks to diversify their reserves away from the dollar could also provide some additional support for gold, he said. "We expect the de-dollarization trend among central banks and private asset managers to continue," Khandelwal said. "We estimate central banks bought around 900 metric tons of gold in 2024, and these volumes can be sustained well above the prior decade's average of around 325 metric tons a year."

Their main demand then was a federal law, known as the Central Protection Act (CPA), to protect doctors and medical staff at their workplace. Several doctors work in the capital New Delhi, but they say things are much worse at remote health care centers. The survey had 1,566 responses from doctors, nurses and other medical staff across the country. Protests by medical staff in Kolkata earlier this year lasted for weeks following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. The Supreme Court of India opened a case on the Kolkata trainee doctor’s rape and murder and formed a national task force to recommend measures to improve security at hospitals.

The founder of the first gold-tracking ETF is still bullish on the commodity two decades later. "Things are looking good for the rest of this year and for next year," George Milling-Stanley told CNBC's "ETF Edge" this week. Even the postelection pullback in gold futures and the SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) hasn't tarnished the record run this year. "This is why we've seen the stock market go up dramatically, why we've seen the cryptocurrencies go up dramatically." But the precious metal, and in turn, the GLD ETF, are "starting to claw back some of the lost ground," Milling-Stanley said.

Before global leaders take the problem of plastic pollution into their hands this month, Japanese manicurist Naomi Arimoto is putting it into her fingernails. “I became aware of environmental issues the moment I saw with my own eyes just how much plastic waste was in the ocean,” 42-year-old Arimoto said. “I thought it was horrifying.”An estimated 22 million tons of plastic waste is dumped into the environment each year, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Arimoto opened a nail salon in her home in 2018 after a spinal condition forced her to give up her career as a social worker, and she’s been using Umigomi, or “sea trash,” to make nail art since 2021. To turn sea trash into treasure, Arimoto starts by rinsing the plastic in fresh water and then sorting it by color.

CNN —A shiny metal likeness of England soccer captain Harry Kane has become the latest statue of a sports star to face criticism for failing to capture the essence of its subject. “A real proud moment for me to go back to where my life in football began and unveil a statue. The juxtaposition makes the differences between the real life Kane and his bronze likeness amusingly apparent, with many questioning whether Kane could truly be impressed by the work. “He grabbed me from behind, tore my clothes apart and raped me,” Sohrab – whose name has been changed for security reasons – told CNN in October. Transgender and gender non-conforming people are being “consistently” targeted at Taliban checkpoints due to their choice of clothing, human rights groups said. “I will never forget when the Taliban came to our house,” Samiar Nazari, a 22-year-old transgender man, told CNN. Other human rights groups have documented instances of extrajudicial detention, conducted out of the public eye. With little sign that the Taliban will improve their record on human rights, many in the country feel abandoned by the international community.

The two-stage megarocket — which features the Starship spacecraft stacked atop the Super Heavy booster — will attempt liftoff during a 30-minute window that opens at 5 p.m. If the test flight team deems conditions are favorable for a landing attempt, booster touchdown should occur about seven minutes after launch. Joe Skipper/ReutersThe Starship spacecraft, meanwhile, will fire up its own six engines before entering a coasting phase as it soars through space. Three Wall Street banks have taken differing views on gold's trajectory in 2025, reflecting the complex economic outlook. Goldman Sachs expects the price of the yellow metal to reach $3,000 per ounce by December 2025, saying "Go For Gold" in a note from Nov. 17. The gold price has declined by 7% since late October as the risk of a disputed U.S. election result diminished. While maintaining a positive outlook on gold, UBS warned that its gains — gold had risen 35% this year until November — could slow down. Goldman Sachs pointed to a fivefold increase in central bank gold purchases, driven by concerns about financial sanctions and sovereign debt sustainability.

A truck rammed the gates of parliament in the Russian-backed breakaway Georgian region of Abkhazia on Friday as hundreds protested against an investment agreement with Moscow that some Abkhaz fear will price them out of the property market. Two people were injured in the clashes, Russia’s RIA state news agency cited local emergency services as saying. Russian media showed a truck ramming into the gates surrounding the parliament in the capital, Sukhumi. Russia recognized Abkhazia and another breakaway region, South Ossetia, as independent states in 2008 after Russian troops repelled a Georgian attempt to retake South Ossetia in a five-day war.
