AdvertisementSnap's new Spectacles offer AR features like piano lessons and video calls. While the Vision Pro is a heavier corded headset, Meta's smart glasses are more like sunglasses with a camera and an AI assistant. AdvertisementSome features were clunky but impressiveOne of the Spectacles Lenses offered virtual piano lessons. AdvertisementGoogle tried and failed to break open the smart glasses market in the past, but that hasn't stopped CEO Mark Zuckerberg from showing off another pair of smart specs, Orion, at Meta Connect in September. AdvertisementI was impressed by the Spectacles demo, but I'm still waiting for a feature that makes them feel like a must-have.

For many, the reaction among investors only reinforced the need to look at longer-term opportunities in individual stocks that haven't changed. About half of Xpeng's 20,000-plus deliveries in each of the past two months have come from its lower-priced Mona M03 car. In the consumer sector, Macquarie's top pick is Yum China , which operates Pizza Hut and KFC in China. Yum China on Nov. 4 reported third-quarter earnings, showing operating profit grew by 15% year-on-year to $371 million. "You have to be very willing to suffer the negative sentiment to invest in China," Ren said.

Apple is doing research into the smart glasses market, Bloomberg reported. The report comes amid weak Vision Pro demand and flashy smart glasses demos from competitors. AdvertisementApple is possibly considering entering the smart glasses market even as it reportedly scales back Vision Pro production. The AI-enabled smart glasses have cameras, speakers, and a microphone, and they can be worn and used on the go. If Apple's goal is to rival Meta's unreleased Orion glasses, it has time to work on its product.

Now, despite a rocky start three years ago, Meta's smart glasses are doing better than expected. Meta's Ray-Bans have a camera and speaker and are packed with AI. Meta's loftier goal, the Orion glasses , aren't quite there. Yet getting people into the Orion glasses may depend on getting people comfortable with smart glasses generally, and that's where the Ray-Bans could come in. And the Meta Ray-Bans make it even easier to use AI as you move through the world — no hands (and awkward air-pinching ) required.

Meta's smart glasses are getting an upgrade. "People love their Ray-Ban Meta glasses so much so that for a little while, we were struggling to keep up with the demand." The Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer with polarized lenses costs $329, while the Transitions options are $379, according to Meta's website. The existing models of Ray-Ban Meta glasses let customers capture photos and videos, live stream on Instagram, and accept video calls. Last September, the tech giant announced it was adding Meta AI to its smart glasses for US-based customers, letting them use the virtual assistant AI with the command, "Hey Meta."

Along with its S24 series of smartphones, foldable devices, smartwatches and now the Galaxy Ring, Samsung is hoping to lock users into its world of products held together with its suite of artificial intelligence features, known as Galaxy AI. Arjun KharpalOne of the things Samsung said was look, the ring is one product, but we've got the watch, we've got the smartphone. I think that's the right approach for Samsung, I don't think they have unrealistic expectations for volumes on this. And you'd feel like if there was some sort of Apple ring, it would do pretty good volumes. Do you think Samsung is seriously looking at ways to monetize this via subscriptions or other kinds of service business model?

When the Vision Pro headset launched in February, the $3,500 price tag and lack of a really great app gave mainstream consumers pause. Since then, Apple has been considering ways to push the headset product line forward and attract new customers, Bloomberg reported on Sunday. AdvertisementThe seemingly lackluster response to the expensive Vision Pro launch has led execs working on the product to do a bit of soul-searching about the way forward for the headset, Bloomberg said. They want to make Vision Pro a more mainstream product, with options at higher and lower prices. Bloomberg said Apple has spent years working on a headset that would cost $1,500 to $2,000, which could be released by the end of 2025.

Zuck has been using his platforms to demo Meta's products, including the company's AI glasses. In a video posted late last year, he used Meta's AI Ray-Bans to guide him through braiding his daughter's hair. Zuckerberg posted a video reviewing Apple's new mixed-reality headset, perhaps unsurprisingly deciding Meta's $500 Quest headset was superior. The billionaire has also taken to criticizing Apple's headset on other social media platforms and behind closed doors in private meetings. In a post on Threads last week, Zuckerberg said if Meta's Quest is like the Vision Pro in five years, "we'll have regressed significantly."

The company has discussed making a smart ring, though it's not actively working on the product, Bloomberg reported. It's also exploring whether it should make smart glasses and put tiny cameras onto AirPods that could bring AI benefits, the report said. Apple has issued a number of patents for smart glasses and smart rings in the past dating back at least 10 years. Apple has also had early discussions about creating smart glasses as a possible alternative to AirPods, the report said. A smart ring would also be a competitor for Oura, and newcomer Samsung's upcoming Galaxy smart ring that it plans to release later this year, which is designed to keep track of health metrics.

Meta said Wednesday that Broadcom CEO president Hock Tan and philanthropist and former Enron executive John Arnold are joining the company's board of directors. Tan has been leading the semiconductor giant since 2006, giving him extensive international experience working in computing infrastructure technology. "As we focus on building AGI, having directors with deep expertise in silicon and energy infrastructure will help us execute our long term vision," Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement. The technical backgrounds of the incomers contrast with former Meta operating chief Sheryl Sandberg, who recently said she would step down from the company's board. Tan and Arnold join a board that includes former PayPal Executive Vice President Peggy Alford, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, Dropbox CEO Drew Houston, former U.S. deputy secretary of the treasury Robert M. Kimmitt and DoorDash CEO Tony Xu.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg upped the ante this week by disclosing how many of these graphics processing units Meta will have by the end of 2024. AdvertisementTo that end, Meta will have purchased about 350,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs by the end of 2024. And overall the company will own roughly 600,000 of these types of chips, if you include other similar GPUs, Zuckerberg noted. A single Nvidia H100 GPU is estimated to cost about $30,000 although other estimates put the cost as high as $40,000. And similar GPUs from other providers may be cheaper than Nvidia's offerings.

Some tech leaders see the gadgets as the iPhone of the AI era, a way to own the hardware we use to interact with AI. A true iPhone successor could be tech's "golden goose," but past attempts have failed. The race is on as generative AI tools like ChatGPT, OpenAI's conversational AI chatbot, take the world by storm. Even though he said AI hardware innovations represent "the golden goose for tech players in the next decade along with software," he doesn't think all of them will be successful. AdvertisementAdvertisementYet, despite AI's impressive capabilities, Haigh said that smartphones may still be easier to use for the average consumer than AI devices, which means that AI personal devices may take awhile to gain public interest.
