Now, despite a rocky start three years ago, Meta's smart glasses are doing better than expected. Meta's Ray-Bans have a camera and speaker and are packed with AI. Meta's loftier goal, the Orion glasses , aren't quite there. Yet getting people into the Orion glasses may depend on getting people comfortable with smart glasses generally, and that's where the Ray-Bans could come in. And the Meta Ray-Bans make it even easier to use AI as you move through the world — no hands (and awkward air-pinching ) required.

Read previewNvidia CEO Jensen Huang was one of several big names to try out Meta's new "Orion" prototype glasses at Meta's Connect event on Wednesday — and he appeared to be a fan. The Nvidia CEO, who was one of the testers, referred to the glasses' 100-gram weight as "a big deal" and complimented various aspects of the technology. AdvertisementThe "Orion" glasses are the first prototype of full holographic augmented reality, and Zuckerberg referred to them as the "most advanced glasses the world has ever seen." The Meta CEO named several of the challenges with building the glasses, like the need for a wide field of view while keeping them light. Snap on Tuesday announced the fifth generation of its Spectacles augmented reality glasses that can overlay digital graphics onto the physical world. Snap's announcement comes days before rival Meta's Connect event, a conference where Facebook's parent typically unveils its latest hardware. Like Meta, Snap has been trying for years to break into consumer hardware. The previous day Meta reported better-than-expected quarterly results that sent the stock price up 7%. The company has yet to find meaningful success, but Wall Street has afforded Meta patience with Reality Labs because the company's advertising business is thriving.

Microsoft, Meta, and more are touting AI assistants that are far more advanced than Siri and Alexa. These AI assistants have the potential to deal with tedious digital tasks, or "crapmin." From Microsoft to Meta, tech companies leading the charge in AI are starting to make clear what the future of AI looks like to them. Meta's AI assistant "surfaces options directly in the chat, so you can decide as a group which location to explore." Letting an AI assistant take care of all aspects of our "crapmin" will require a lot of confidence in its capabilities.

Meta's AI initiatives are likely to be a key aspect of how it monetizes products and services going forward, while bringing more users and customers into the AI fold. Whereas Meta's headset is priced for mass-market adoption, Apple's headset is clearly a premium device targeted to those who demand the most cutting-edge technology — such as micro-OLED lenses with eye-tracking capabilities . Similarly, JMP Securities argued that the event "highlights Meta's AI tailwinds," which could "unlock additional advertising budgets with new chat-based customer service." Meanwhile, we expect adoption of Meta's Quest 3 hardware to grow. But the integration of the Meta AI assistant into that platform should ultimately make the glasses a more valuable product over time.

Meta has new artificial intelligence tools and celebrity-endorsed digital assistants that CEO Mark Zuckerberg hopes will help eventually help jumpstart the metaverse. Zuckerberg showed off the AI software as well as the company's new Quest 3 virtual reality headset and latest Ray-Ban smart glasses on Wednesday at Meta's Connect conference for VR developers at its headquarters in Menlo Park, California. Zuckerberg also introduced new AI-powered editing tools coming next month to Instagram that will let users alter their photos and pictures with written prompts. He showed in a demonstration how various prompts could modify one of his childhood photos to picture the young executive wearing an ugly sweater in one image and sporting blue hair in another. Powering the new AI tools is the company's Emu computer vision model, which Zuckerberg characterized as a kind of sibling technology to its Llama family of language-generating software.

Horizon Worlds, Meta 's flagship metaverse for consumers, is failing to meet internal performance expectations, according to The Wall Street Journal, which reviewed internal company documents. Additionally, the documents showed that most users didn't return to Horizon after the first month on the platform, and the number of users has steadily declined since spring, the Journal said. As a result, Meta created Horizon Worlds, which is a network of virtual spaces where users can engage with one another as avatars. Representatives for Meta didn't immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment. Read the full Journal report here.
Meta revealed legs for its avatars in its metaverse, Horizon World, at the annual Connect event. A Meta spokesperson clarified the legs were a preview made of "animations created from motion capture." It's not clear if Meta has a working demo of the feature and a release date wasn't specified. Zuckerberg said "legs are hard," because it's hard to accurately position body parts like legs in virtual reality, "which is why other virtual reality systems don't have them either." The event did include more concrete news: Zuckerberg announced the new $1499 Quest Pro virtual reality headset is launching October 25.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg debuted the new metaverse avatars at the company's Connect conference. The company also announced a new $1,499 Quest Pro virtual reality headset, and new partnerships. The metaverse avatars didn't have legs before because it was harder in virtual reality to accurately position where body parts like legs are, the Facebook founder said. "But seriously, legs are hard, which is why other virtual reality systems don't have them either," Zuckerberg said. Zuckerberg shared an updated metaverse avatar image Friday after being widely mocked for a previous version.
