An Arizona man has been charged with attempted murder after officials say he tried to kill a child safety case worker during a discussion about his child. Deandre Terrell Johnson, 32, attempted to strangle a Department of Child Safety case worker “until the victim lost consciousness” after a meeting involving his daughter, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office said. An attorney listed for Johnson in the indictment was not immediately reached for comment on Friday afternoon. Johnson has been charged with attempt to commit first-degree murder; aggravated assault and unlawful flight from law enforcement. Attempts to reach a representative with the Department of Child Safety were unsuccessful Friday.

Across the country Tuesday, counties moved toward Trump by a median of 3.1 percentage points compared to the 2020 election. But in the top 10% of counties ranked most difficult for buying a home, the median shift was 4.5 percentage points. In Passaic County, New Jersey, with a population of more than 500,000, voters flipped for Trump by nearly 19 percentage points. Nearby in Pennsylvania, Northampton County — which narrowly tipped red with a shift of 3 percentage points — has a similar story. But not all high-challenge housing counties swung toward Trump.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, who ascended to office vowing sweeping reforms to the criminal justice system and then faced intense criticism over public safety issues, lost his bid for re-election, The Associated Press projected. In office, Gascón quickly got to work implementing his reformist agenda. San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin was recalled from office in 2022 after his critics assailed him as a soft-on-crime progressive. He then was the assistant attorney general for the U.S. Justice Department’s tax division under former President George W. Bush. CNN —Five people were killed when a small plane crashed through a fence and hit a car while aborting takeoff at an Arizona airport Tuesday afternoon, officials said. “Preliminary information indicates that the plane impacted the airport perimeter fence and a passenger vehicle during an aborted takeoff,” the NTSB said in an emailed statement to CNN Wednesday morning. Five people were killed in the crash, according to Marrisa Ramirez-Ramos, a spokesperson for the Mesa Fire and Medical Department, who declined to comment further on the deaths. “Five people were on board the plane,” the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement to CNN. The plane crashed through a metal fence and “a few concrete walls,” a witness, Joshua Golabi, told CNN affiliate KPNX.

Voting systems: How we know the election is secure

Musk has used X to spread unfounded allegations about voting systems, laying groundwork to question the election before it happens. To better understand the security of US voting systems and why there’s no indication that they’re not secure, I talked to CNN’s Zachary Cohen, who covers national security, and Sean Lyngaas, who covers cybersecurity. There are three large election equipment vendors in the US: Dominion; ES&S, or Election Systems and Software; and Hart InterCivic. Dominion Voting Systems ballot-counting machines are lined up at a Torrance County warehouse during testing of election equipment with local candidates and partisan officers in Estancia, New Mexico, on September 29, 2022. COHEN: We know people, these pro-Trump operatives and lawyers, have already gotten access to election software – voting software, voting systems in Georgia, copied the entire election database from several counties.

Turning Point Action is one of several outside groups that have taken over the work of canvassing on behalf of Republicans. Some churches and pastors promoted Turning Point events during worship services and in social media posts, NBC News found. Training churches to serve as unofficial Trump campaign surrogates fits into a broader campaign by Turning Point to mobilize evangelicals. Screenshots of Turning Point Action's smartphone app, which encourages canvassers to avoid voters from the "wrong party." When a person attending a June Turning Point conference asked whether it was a good idea to run get-out-the-vote programs through churches, Brett Galaszewski, a Turning Point field director, said that’s exactly what pastors should be doing.

Brittany Randall believes her 15-year-old daughter contracted E. coli after eating at McDonald's. My 15-year-old daughter, Kamberlyn, ate the same meal at McDonald's, a Quarter Pounder with cheese and extra pickles, on September 25 and September 27. Ten days later, we were transferred to the nearest children's hospital for her to receive dialysis treatment for a life-threatening complication of E. coli. Kamberlyn told me she felt a bit better after receiving fluids from the hospital. The Food and Drug Administration has identified the onions on McDonald's Quarter Pounders as a possible source of this outbreak.

At least a dozen mail ballots were stolen, fraudulently filled out and submitted in Colorado for the Nov. 5 election, the Colorado secretary of state’s office said Thursday. Authorities said the ballots were mailed into the Mesa County election office via USPS, not returned in drop boxes. The secretary of state’s office said nearly all of the votes cast on the stolen ballots were stopped before they were counted. But three ballots were counted before election officials could pull them from the process because they passed signature verification. Mesa County has been home to election conspiracies in recent years, including by former Republican Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, who was recently convicted in a 2021 security breach of the county’s election system.

The investigation into the E. coli outbreak in McDonald's Quarter Pounders that has killed at least one person and sickened nearly 50 others increasingly points to the slivered onions served on the hamburgers. The onions in question, according to a McDonald’s spokesperson, come from a single source and are then sliced and packaged as raw vegetables in individual bags and sent to restaurants. State health officials alerted the CDC about an unusual uptick in E. coli cases on Oct. 10. There is no indication that diced onions on other McDonald’s menu items are part of the outbreak. "While the slivered onions are the likely source, FSIS continues to verify the safety of the ground beef used," the spokesperson said.

Body parts found in a freezer earlier this year after a Colorado home was sold have been identified as those of the 16-year-old daughter of the home’s previous owner, authorities said Friday. The death of Amanda Leariel Overstreet is being investigated as a homicide and an investigation is ongoing, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office said. The last time Amanda had been seen or heard from was in April 2005, the sheriff’s office said. Amanda lived in the Grand Junction and Harris County, Texas, areas, the coroner’s office said. "The house was purchased, fully remodeled, and sold to the current owner," the sheriff's office said.

Amanda Overstreet was identified as the victim through DNA testing, according to a Friday news release from the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. City officials haven't yet tallied up what the Trump campaign owes Erie for public safety costs for his most recent rally in September. The five localities that spoke to NBC News have sent their bills to the Trump campaign. Four years later, the Trump campaign hasn't paid. The unpaid bills go back even further for Spokane, Washington, which wants the Trump campaign to pay for costs incurred in a May 2016 visit, before Trump officially became the Republican nominee for president. Similarly, Erie's bills were to cover police, fire and public works personnel overtime, according to city spokesperson Rob Lee.

It has offered adherents myriad “exclusive” opportunities to join clubs to give counsel to Mr. Trump, and it has repeatedly claimed that Mr. Trump is personally reviewing lists of small donors. The New York Times looked at some 7,400 emails sent by the Trump campaign since Mr. Trump entered the presidential race. Ms. Harris, and before her Mr. Biden, have far outpaced Mr. Trump in fund-raising this cycle, including from small-dollar donors. But both in sheer number (about 75 emails per week, on average, throughout this campaign cycle) and in syntax, the former president’s campaign emails stand out. Similar questions have arisen about contests Mr. Trump’s campaign and political action committee have run in years past.

And it’s a playbook that former President Donald Trump’s campaign has tossed aside. It’s a gamble, Trump’s campaign internally acknowledges, but one that they insist is built on data they have collected over nearly a decade and tested for the past six months. Days later, the Michigan state party chairman also plugged 10xVotes when he rolled into Traverse City, Michigan, alongside Trump running mate JD Vance. But rather than courting those voters, Trump’s campaign is in search of new ones. Trump’s campaign has also tried to seize on discord within the Democratic coalition.
