(CNN) — Striking images from the Sahara Desert show large lakes etched into rolling sand dunes after one of the most arid, barren places in the world was hit with its first floods in decades. Some of the most dramatic images are from the desert town of Merzouga, where the rare deluge carved new lakes into the sand dunes. Not even closeThough largely unknown in the West, sand hammams — or sand baths — are anything but new. Desert camps in Morocco are offering sand hammams, or sand baths, to travelers. Sand hammams are not advisable for anyone with blood pressure or heart-related medical problems, due to the intensity of the heat. Due to the sand's mineral composition, sand hammams are also used to combat skin conditions, such as acne, psoriasis and other medical ailments. The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur, also offers treatments on a hot sand therapy bed in a dedicated psammotherapy suite.
