Protesters demonstrate outside the Labour Party conference venue in Liverpool against the withdrawal of the winter fuel allowance, on September 23, 2024. “It has felt a bit blunt,” a Labour Member of Parliament admitted after Starmer’s speech Tuesday, summing up the sentiment across much of conference. Unfortunately, the realities of governing are beginning to bite the Labour Party – and it is likely he will need to show some returns far sooner. Starmer’s speech was was light on fresh content but a heckler was calmly removed and the key messages were confidently delivered. But a premiership can only survive on doom and gloom for so long, and patience is already wearing thin among much of the wider party.

He expected future rounds were being re-calibrated after Britain's most recent renewable energy auction failed to attract new offshore wind projects as subsidies were deemed too low and not reflecting rising costs in the industry. Statkraft is also already one of Britain's biggest onshore renewables developers, has a large office in London and knows the market well from previous offshore wind projects, he said. Still, the company's main focus for offshore wind is Ireland, where it is developing 2.2 gigawatts (GW) together with partner Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. It also plans to participate in Norway's first offshore wind auctions and in October bought Swedish Njordr Offshore Wind, which has an early-stage development pipeline of 21 GW.

Lessons from the original Industrial Revolution

These are brilliantly described by Martin Hutchinson, a former Breakingviews columnist, in his new book “Forging Modernity: Why and How Britain Developed the Industrial Revolution”. In fact, several pioneers of the Industrial Revolution were self-taught. The Industrial Revolution can be viewed as the world’s first successful energy transition. The task of financing the Industrial Revolution fell to banks that were scattered across the country, some 800 in all. We are so accustomed to the economic growth sparked by the Industrial Revolution that we tend to view economic expansion as pretty much inevitable.

LIVERPOOL, England, May 13 (Reuters) - The grand final of Eurovision 2023 kicked off on Saturday with last year's winner Kalush Orchestra performing on video in Ukraine and live in Liverpool, the northern English city hosting on behalf of the country that is fighting Russia's invasion. Hill Sixteen was the third horse to die at this year's three-day festival after a heavy fall at the first fence of Saturday's National. Two other horses, Recite A Prayer and Cape Gentleman, were assessed by veterinary staff on the course. The start of the National, one of the highest-profile events in Britain's sporting calendar, was delayed for around 15 minutes after the protesters made their way on to the course. The protesters say the race is cruel to horses, with many having died over the daunting fences down the years. "The Grand National is and always will be an iconic sporting event and the actions of a small number of people will do nothing to diminish its huge and enduring international appeal."
Authorities in Liverpool want the river to be home to a huge tidal power project which, they say, could power as many as 1 million homes, generating thousands of jobs for the region in the process. Speaking to CNBC, Martin Land, director of the Mersey Tidal Power Project, outlined how the system would work in practice. Tidal barrage systems in operation today include EDF's 240 megawatt La Rance tidal power plant in France, and South Korea's 254 MW Sihwa Lake tidal power plant, currently the world's largest. The agreement, it added, would see "K-water and the Combined Authority working closely together to explore possibilities for tidal power." "Once operational, Mersey Tidal Power would have the potential to become the world's largest tidal power scheme," he said.
CNN —The Beatles’ hometown of Liverpool, UK will be stepping in to host the festivities at the Eurovision 2023 Song Contest next May, the competition announced Friday. While Eurovision is usually hosted in a city in the prior year’s winning country, this year’s victor Ukraine cannot host the upcoming show due to the ongoing conflict with Russia. Ukraine won the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest this past May, amid a flood of goodwill extended toward the country in light of the war. “Liverpool is the ideal place to host the 67th Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Ukraine,” said Eurovision Song Contest executive supervisor Martin Österdahl in a statement. “The city is synonymous with music and Liverpool Arena exceeds all the requirements needed to stage a global event of this scale.

King Charles has inherited the Duchy of Lancaster estate valued at more than $750 million. He will not have to pay inheritance tax on the estate due to a rule approved in 1993. The provision was first exercised in 2002 when the Queen Mother passed on an estate worth about $80 million to the Queen including a collection of Faberge eggs. The Lancaster estate generated revenue of £24 million ($27 million) last year, its financial records state, and the King is now entitled to its income. It had assets worth more than £650 million ($754 million) at the end of March this year, the duchy's website states.
