In today’s edition, national political correspondent Steve Kornacki breaks down the blue areas across the country where Donald Trump expanded his coalition. These five jurisdictions help tell the story of where and how Trump expanded his coalition the most dramatically. When Trump ran in 2016, he was crushed in Lawrence, an old mill city on the Merrimack River, by 66 points. Trump transition watchPresident-elect Donald Trump is continuing the process of building out his administration, tapping allies for key posts. DeSantis does not have to listen to Trump, after the two men saw their relationship fray amid DeSantis’ national rise and his failed 2024 presidential campaign.

The DeSantis and Haley camps each believed they would benefit if the other left the field and created an unambiguous one-on-one race with Trump. In fact, both the Trump and DeSantis campaigns believe that more of the Florida governor’s supporters will likely pick Trump. Any gain or loss for Haley among voters from DeSantis’ decision seems likely to affect the race only marginally, many GOP observers believe. Even at that point in the 2016 race, Trump had won only a cumulative 40% of the votes cast in the GOP primaries. His theory that he could peel away a meaningful number of previous Trump voters simply proved wrong.

While Trump and his team may be looking ahead to a potential general election rematch – and he has maintained a robust lead in GOP primary polling – the former president is still courting voters in the early nominating states. Trump’s campaign believes that winning Iowa and New Hampshire would effectively force his primary opponents to drop out and donors to rally around him, his advisers said. Alternatively, New Hampshire is also a key state for Trump’s rivals looking to make headway in their own races. “In New Hampshire, we have a lot of people that say that, yes, they support President Trump, but that doesn’t mean they’re voting for him,” Haley said last month while filing for the Granite State GOP primary. He also predicted during the Merrimack event that independents would vote in “record numbers” in the New Hampshire primary, arguing that most of them don’t want to see Trump as president again.

At a high school cafeteria in Merrimack, N.H., on Tuesday, where patriotic music blasted from the speakers and the lunch tables were decked in star-spangled napery, Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota mingled with families who were digging into eggs, sausage and pancakes at a Fourth of July breakfast hosted by the local Rotary Club. Nelson Disco, 88, one of the prospective voters in the small crowd, had a couple of questions for him. “You’ve got some competition,” Mr. Disco exclaimed, as the North Dakota governor told him he was seeking the Republican nomination for president. But Mr. Burgum was undeterred: “Feeling great” about the race, he said.

Both Mr. DeSantis and Mr. Scott will be at the July 4 parade in Merrimack, N.H., as will several other Republican presidential hopefuls: Mr. Burgum, former Representative Will Hurd of Texas, the entrepreneur and author Vivek Ramaswamy, and Perry Johnson, a Michigan businessman. Mr. Trump’s campaign evinces no concern that his absence from the stage will give his rivals any room to make up ground in the Republican primaries. Republican veterans don’t see much of an opening for Mr. Trump’s rivals either. “He definitely plays by a different set of rules,” said David Kochel, a longtime Republican adviser and strategist in Iowa. field at the Republican Party of Iowa’s biggest fund-raiser, the Lincoln Dinner, on July 28.

On the day of a special election in New Hampshire in April 2021, Michael Drouin posted a fake advertisement on Craigslist offering a free trailer and listed the phone number of Bill Boyd, a candidate for a state House seat. Mr. Drouin was indicted in November 2022 on a felony charge of interference with election communications. On Monday, Mr. Drouin, 30, of Merrimack, N.H., pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of creating a false document, an election law offense, admitting that he knowingly interfered with Mr. Boyd’s ability to use his cellphone on Election Day. The charge is a misdemeanor, not a felony, but it still cost him his right to vote in the state. People who are convicted of a willful violation of the state’s election laws lose their right to vote under the New Hampshire Constitution.

During the US Civil War, Union and Confederate ships fought naval battles all over the world. She took 38 prizes and more than 1,000 prisoners, some of them joining the Confederate ship. From there, Shenandoah terrorized American ships in sea lanes around the Cape of Good Hope, through the Pacific, and into the Bering Sea off Alaska. Even after the Civil War was over, Shenandoah continued her Pacific rampage. The skipper just didn't believe Lee's surrender ended the war, even when American whaling captains told him so.
