“When I was younger, I was never thinking that I can win a stage in the Tour de France,” Pogačar tells CNN Sport. “After I won the first Tour de France – because that’s an ultimate goal in cycling – everything is more or less a bonus. “But three now, three Tours de France and maybe 10 more years of my career if I’m well. That includes one-day classics, which require an explosivity normally sacrificed by Tour de France contenders in favor of endurance. He said last year that Pogačar can “win everything” and called the young rider a “blessing” for cycling fans.

CNN —Mark Cavendish made cycling history on Wednesday, winning a record-breaking 35th stage at the Tour de France. The 39-year-old has now surpassed legendary cyclist Eddy Merckx after winning a chaotic sprint finish at the end of the 177.4 kilometer fifth stage from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Saint-Vulbas. Breaking Merckx’s record, who last raced in the Tour de France 49 years ago, has seemed almost impossible for any cyclist, even Cavendish. I put a big gamble on this year to make sure we are good here at the Tour de France,” an emotional Cavendish told ITV after the win. His participation in this year’s Tour de France seemed in jeopardy during the first stage, though, as television cameras caught him vomiting on his bike, reportedly struggling from heat exhaustion.

Vingegaard, who won his second Tour in a row last July, is expected to be in the French capital on Wednesday when organisers reveal the route for the 2024 Tour. It was the first time on Tuesday that the Velo d'Or, an award first attributed in 1992, was being handed at a formal ceremony. Dutch Demi Vollering, who won the Tour de France Femmes, won the women's Velo d'Or. Belgian Lotte Kopecky received the women's Eddy Merckx award after notably winning the Tour of Flanders and the world champion titles.

Vingegaard said his Jumbo-Visma team had a plan to make Pogacar crack, but the 2020 and 2021 champion saw it differently. "I didn't notice, I was going day by day and I didn't see that I was feeling worse and worse. Vingegaard's season is solely focused on the Tour while this year Pogacar sought victories in Milan-Sanremo (4th), the Tour of Flanders (1st) and Paris-Nice (1st). He won the Fleche Wallonne but a crash on the Liege-Bastogne-Liege meant he could not prepare correctly for the Tour. Pogacar also wants to beat Vingegaard on the Tour before possibly moving on to "new challenges".
