LOS ANGELES — Erik and Lyle Menendez’s bid for freedom hit another possible roadblock this week as California Gov. Gavin Newsom said that he will not review their clemency request until after the incoming Los Angeles County district attorney makes a resentencing recommendation. Nathan Hochman is set to take office Dec. 2 after his win earlier this month over District Attorney George Gascón, who has supported Menendez resentencing and urged clemency. A hearing is scheduled before a judge on Dec. 11Nathan Hochman on Oct. 10 in Los Angeles. The win makes Kim the state’s first Asian American senator. In the state’s second-most-populous county, Middlesex, for example, eligible Asian American voters make up almost 38% of the electorate. He is now set to be the first Korean American U.S. senator and has said his win would be a chance to listen to Asian American voters, who have often felt excluded from American politics. However, not everyone has been receptive to an Asian American like him representing the state. As he looks to start his first term as a senator, Kim said he hopes Asian Americans will take the leap into public service.

CNN —Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón “strongly supports” Erik and Lyle Menendez’s bid for clemency and has written letters on behalf of each brother to California Gov. The district attorney adds that his office has communicated with several family members of Kitty and Jose Menendez and all family members except one, Kitty Menendez’s brother, support commutation. CNN has reached out to the brothers’ attorney, Mark Geragos, to confirm a formal clemency request has been sent to the governor’s office. “I strongly support clemency for Erik and Lyle Menendez,” Gascón said in a statement Wednesday. Under California law, the brothers would be immediately eligible for parole because they were 26 or younger when they committed their crimes.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said Thursday he will seek resentencing for Lyle and Erik Menendez in their parents' murders, paving the way for their potential release from prison after decades. Defense attorneys also provided evidence that one of the members of the Menudo boy band alleged he was sexually abused by José Menendez, Gascón said. Lyle and Erik Menendez alleged sexual abuse by their father at their first trial. Lyle Menendez is now 56, and Erik Menendez is 53. “Erik and Lyle Menendez’ motive was pure greed,” Cady wrote in the letter, which was sent Oct. 14.

Los Angeles CNN —Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón is expected to announce his decision Thursday afternoon on whether to recommend resentencing in the case of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were convicted of murdering their parents more than three decades ago. A judge will ultimately decide on the brothers’ case, and a hearing on the matter has been scheduled for November 26. The attorneys also said a letter Erik Menendez wrote to a cousin months before the killings alludes to the abuse he endured. The brothers’ story has taken on new interest following the September release of the Netflix series, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Netflix also released a documentary on the Menendez case this month featuring both men discussing what led to the killings.

Erik Menendez was 18 and Lyle Menendez was 21 when their parents were fatally shot in 1989. “My hope is that Erik and Lyle Menendez’s life sentences are reconsidered,” Kardashian says. Actor Cooper Koch, who plays Erik Menendez in the Netflix series, joined her. Erik Menendez, now 53, had earlier slammed the Netflix series’ dramatized portrayal of his and his brothers’ lives as “blatant lies” and accused the show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, of purposefully creating a caricature of Lyle Menendez, now 56. You think you know the story of Lyle and Erik Menendez. Both brothers said they had been sexually, physically and emotionally abused for years by their parents. Soon, the Menendez brothers’ case would continue to play out amid another high-profile murder case prosecuted by the same DA’s office. The prosecutor, having successfully argued to exclude the abuse testimony, mocked the brothers’ defense during his closing arguments for not producing any evidence of abuse. Despite overwhelming family testimony acknowledging the abuse Erik and Lyle suffered, the public remained skeptical.

New York CNN —Additional charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams are “possible” and it’s “likely” there will be additional defendants charged as part of the alleged scheme in the federal corruption case, a prosecutor said Wednesday at a court hearing. Federal prosecutor Hagan Scotten said they have evidence that Adams attempted to tamper with a witness in the investigation. The federal prosecutor revealed new information about the investigation, saying it began in the summer of 2021 before Adams became mayor. The additional defendants could be charged in a superseding indictment or in a separate case, Scotten added. CNN —Federal prosecutors say New York City Mayor Eric Adams engaged in a “long-running conspiracy,” accepting luxury travel and gifts from foreign businesspeople and at least one Turkish government official. Adams, who’s been indicted on five federal public corruption charges, has denied wrongdoing and says he is being targeted because of his positions. Federal agents search Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the mayor of New York City, on September 26, 2024, after Mayor Eric Adams was indicted on federal criminal charges. That Adams, a Democrat, has been charged by prosecutors in the Southern District of New York on corruption charges does not, on its own, disprove Trump’s point. Adams remains defiant in the face of the charges, but they are clearly having an effect on New York politics.

The biggest chunk – about $1.9 million – was spent by Trump’s campaign and fundraising committees on a Trump-owned company that operates his jet. Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, said that “committees are paying the fair market rate for all venues and services” provided by Trump businesses. The dynamic of candidates shelling out thousands on Trump’s businesses while vying for his endorsement – which can make or break Republican campaigns – is an example of how politics has boosted his businesses’ bottom line. About 150 congressional candidates have reported spending campaign funds at Trump businesses, including some Democrats in the years before his first presidential bid. Walker’s campaign spent a total of nearly $215,000 at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club and his Las Vegas hotel.

Mr. Menendez’s decision to quit months before the end of his third term will likely allow Democrats to avoid a potentially ugly intraparty fight at a highly fraught political moment. New Jersey’s Democratic governor, Philip D. Murphy, is expected to appoint a replacement who would serve until January. Mr. Menendez, 70, has insisted that he is innocent and vowed to appeal the guilty verdict. The decision, first reported by The New Jersey Globe, was described by four people familiar with Mr. Menendez’s remarks who were not authorized to discuss them publicly. One of them said Mr. Menendez planned to step down on Aug. 20 and could announce the decision publicly as soon as Tuesday afternoon.

CNN —Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey will resign his seat effective August 20, according to a copy of his resignation letter obtained by CNN. Menendez had faced mounting pressure from within his own party to resign or face the threat of expulsion from the Senate. Receipt of Menendez’s resignation letter was announced Tuesday on the Senate floor in a brief exchange between Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Presiding Officer Sen. Peter Welch, a Democrat from Vermont. “In light of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign,” Schumer said in a statement. Menendez stepped down as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee last year, but had long rejected calls to resign his US Senate seat.

CNN —The jury has begun deliberating in the federal corruption trial against Sen. Bob Menendez and his co-defendants. Menendez and his co-defendants, New Jersey businessmen Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, are accused of participating in a yearslong bribery scheme. Prosecutors spent nearly seven weeks untangling the multiple corruption schemes that they allege Bob and Nadine Menendez and the co-defendants were involved in. Federal prosecutors structured their case by chapters, calling witnesses to testify about separate schemes allegedly brokered by the senator in tandem with his wife. During the trial, the senator’s lawyers called five witnesses, including his sister, sister-in-law and the attorney for a friend of Uribe.

A Senator’s Fate Is in a Jury’s Hands

The Manhattan jury in Senator Robert Menendez’s corruption trial began its deliberations midday Friday on a raft of federal charges in what prosecutors describe as a complex and yearslong bribery conspiracy. A third-term Democrat who represents New Jersey, Mr. Menendez is accused of steering aid to Egypt, applying political pressure to preserve a friend’s business monopoly and meddling in criminal investigations in exchange for bribes of gold, cash and a Mercedes-Benz. On Thursday, Mr. Menendez, 70, seated at the defense table with his lawyers, leaned back in a chair, hands clasped on his lap, as a prosecutor offered an hourslong rebuttal to frequently impassioned closing arguments by lawyers for the senator and two businessmen, Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, who are being tried with him. In his rebuttal argument, the prosecutor, Daniel C. Richenthal, took direct aim at a pillar of the senator’s defense strategy — an effort to shift blame to his wife, Nadine Menendez, 57.

But he urged the jury to refocus of what he called a “clear pattern of corruption.”“The timeline tells you what happened,” he said. Afterward, Mr. Monteleoni said that the businessman, Wael Hana, and another wealthy associate began paying Ms. Menendez a generous salary. Mr. Monteleoni said that was not believable, and he presented text messages and Google search history that he said showed Mr. Menendez knew exactly what his wife was receiving. Mr. Monteleoni was expected to complete his closing argument on Tuesday morning. Mr. Menendez fumed as he left the courthouse on Monday.

Senator Robert Menendez’s lawyers have cast him as a man who was duped by his dazzling wife, Nadine Menendez, and unaware of the gold bars and cash she kept in her locked bedroom closet — or the deals she made to get them. After seven weeks of trial in Federal District Court in Manhattan, prosecutors plan to rest their case on Friday, paving the way for the defense to begin offering evidence intended to poke holes in the government’s case. Mr. Menendez, 70, and Ms. Menendez, 57, are charged with taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange for the senator’s efforts to steer aid to Egypt, prop up an ally’s business monopoly and disrupt criminal investigations on behalf of friends. The senator, a Democrat, is on trial, however, without his wife. A judge postponed Ms. Menendez’s trial after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

After a month and a half of testimony from government witnesses, lawyers for Senator Robert Menendez this week are expected to begin rebutting the web of corruption charges facing New Jersey’s senior senator, once one of the most powerful Democrats in Washington. Federal prosecutors in Manhattan are likely to wrap up their case against Mr. Menendez by Wednesday. Mr. Menendez’s lawyers will then begin to call witnesses; they have said they might call as many as four dozen. Mr. Menendez, 70, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he doled out political favors to friends and foreign governments in exchange for bribes both eye-popping and mundane: hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, gold bars, a Mercedes-Benz, Formula One race tickets, a reclining chair and an exercise machine. He is charged with acting as an agent of a foreign government and is the first senator in American history to be indicted twice in separate bribery cases — facts that have infused the proceeding with a sober, precedent-setting tone.
