Paris, France CNN —Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said on Thursday that weather could pose a problem to Friday’s Olympic Opening Ceremony if it rains, but she remains optimistic in an international exclusive with CNN. Hidalgo would not confirm rumors that superstars Celine Dion and Lady Gaga may perform at the ceremony. “It’s a surprise,” she said, hoping that the Olympic Opening Ceremony will boost the public’s enthusiasm about the Games. Hidalgo last week swam in the River Seine in an effort to demonstrate the cleanliness of the river for the Olympics amid E. coli bacteria concerns. The triathlon and open water swimming Olympic events are due to take place in the Seine.

Aurelien Morissard/Pool/AFP/Getty ImagesThe result of Sunday’s parliamentary election runoff comes as a huge surprise, with France appearing to be on the verge of a major political shift – but not the one everyone was expecting. No pollster predicted before Sunday that a left-wing alliance would win and that the far right would come in third place. The political maneuvering by French President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist party and the left-wing alliance this week was clearly successful. But the left-wing alliance, which has seemed shaky, is going to have a hard time speaking with one voice. While it appears to have partially worked by keeping the far right from power, it has also plunged France into unprecedented political chaos.

One theory about why Macron called an election now is that France might soon have been forced to the polls anyway. When Macron was reelected as president in 2022, his party failed to win an outright majority in parliament. Another theory is that Macron is gambling he can defeat extremist parties by exposing them to government. Some argue Macron hoped that, by giving the RN time in government before, they would have time to prove disappointing to voters. Jordan Bardella has said he will refuse to govern a minority government, meaning France could be left in deadlock in a mess of Macron’s making.

But – and this is the point – it costs Russian forces just as much to destroy with a drone strike as the real thing. “After each hit, the military gives us trophy wreckage,” explains the company’s spokesman, “We collect them. But as the war has worn on and the weaponry arriving in the country has grown ever more sophisticated, so too have Metinvest’s decoys. It shows, hanging from a tree somewhere in Ukraine, a life-size effigy of Russian President Vladimir Putin. It is also the work of his men, he says with satisfaction, and like the weapons, he hopes, soon a thing of the past.

Yet southward progress is precisely what the Ukrainian soldiers with the call signs Karatsupa, Pan and Taba seek, driving their American-made Bradley Fighting Vehicles down a road that is also, they believe, the road to Ukrainian victory. Without the mines, we would already be in Tokmak.”Much has been made of the strategic importance of Robotyne for Ukraine’s three-month-long southern counteroffensive. And Karatsupa, Pan and Taba now carry with them not only pride at what they’ve achieved but also grief at what they’ve lost. Some of the men with whom they captured Robotyne last week have since been killed in a direct hit on their Bradley. A reminder that however important the gain of Robotyne is to the counteroffensive, there is far more loss ahead, further down the road to hell.

Kharlan’s disqualification threw into sharp relief the political and organizational jeopardy that France and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is facing ahead of the Games. So far, no decision has been taken on Russian and Belarusian athletes’ participation at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The opening ceremony is already uniquely French in nature with the Games set to be centered around the Seine, the river running through the city. Organizers also say that the Paris Games “finance themselves,” claiming that 96% of the budget comes from private investment. Next year’s Olympic Games are set to start on July 26 and run until August 11.

Reece will be an American that is new to the area and “not quite who she appears to be,” according to the show’s producers. The long-running drama series began almost four decades ago in 1985 and ended in July. The new season, which began production in Melbourne on Monday and is set to premiere in the autumn, will inaugurate the revitalized series’ new phase. “I’m excited to be part of this iconic show’s next chapter, and I am really looking forward to being back in Australia – a place I know and love,” said Barton in the release. Guests Ian Smith (as Harold Bishop), April Rose Pengilly (as Chloe Brennan) and Melissa Bell (as Lucy Robinson), will also reprise their roles.
The recent global bond rally appears to be tapering off as investors are getting a cold wet dose of reality about Fed rate hikes. Bonds compete with stocks for investors’ dollars, and when yields go up, equities often go down. That tonal shift has sent stocks lower and Treasury yields higher, as investors rethink their views on the path of interest rates. The Federal Reserve’s efforts to date to bring down inflation while maintaining a strong labor market appear achievable, she added. “As a result, although Fed rate hikes could slow the labor market in the coming months, we think labor supply faces persistent headwinds in the longer run.”
Minneapolis CNN —Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Monday she believes US inflation remains too high but that a soft landing is on the radar. During an exclusive interview with CNN’s Melissa Bell from Kyiv, Yellen said the Federal Reserve’s efforts to date to bring down inflation while maintaining a strong labor market appear achievable. “I would say, ‘So far, so good,’” said Yellen, a former Fed chair who led the central bank from 2014-2018. But look, inflation still is too high, but generally if you look over the last year, inflation has been coming down. “It’s utterly essential to preserve that to avoid economic and financial catastrophe,” she told CNN.
