New York CNN —Melinda French Gates is shedding more light on her $1 billion plan to promote women’s rights, announcing Wednesday a new $250 million fund to improve women’s mental and physical health. The billionaire philanthropist launched “Action for Women’s Health”, a fund through her organization Pivotal Ventures. Its webpage says that “women’s health has been underfunded, overlooked, and misunderstood” and that health inequities between men and women “not only impact women’s daily lives, but they can also hurt women’s futures.”“It’s clear we need to do a better job of addressing the barriers to women’s health. “We’re seeing the devastating impacts” of Roe v. When an interviewer asked Gates directly if he believed he was "too rich," the billionaire avoided giving a "yes" or "no" answer. Gates is personally invested in the issue: His nonprofit Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has donated billions of dollars to address global problems like poverty and inequity. He's previously stated that the wealthiest people, himself included, should pay much higher tax rates. "I'm for a tax system in which, if you have more money, you pay a higher percentage in taxes. I think the rich should pay more than they currently do," Gates wrote in a 2019 blog post.

Read previewFrom Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg, billionaires are the power players of philanthropy. It's not possible to generalize, but billionaires' philanthropic contributions likely do not outweigh the negative aspects of wealth inequality. For every Chuck Feeney or 'good' billionaire, there is an Elon Musk or Bill Gates, both with questionable practices. Bill Gates is an example. How does MacKenzie Scott's philanthropy differ from how other billionaires typically approach giving, and what lessons can they learn from her?

But when my eldest son was a young child, there was no vaccine for rotavirus. Mohamed Bassyouni Gates MRIIt just so happened that my research back then supported clinical trials evaluating a vaccine candidate for rotavirus. In Saudi Arabia, where we were living at the time, my two younger children received their rotavirus shots as their doctors recommended. And researchers at the National Institutes of Health in the US determined that the vaccine also “substantially reduced hospitalization and deaths in Africa.”The expectation was that many lives would be saved around the globe thanks to the rotavirus vaccine. This could be the first new TB vaccine in 100 years.

The pandemic signified a “historic backslide,” according to Dr. Katherine O’Brien, director of the Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biological at WHO. WHO and UNICEF’s 2023 immunization coverage report, released Sunday, is the world’s largest dataset on immunization trends for vaccinations against 14 diseases. It analyzed estimates from 185 countries and used a third dose of the diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP3) vaccine — which is recommended for 1-year-olds — as the global marker for immunization coverage. The 2023 report also found HPV vaccine coverage in girls increased 7%, returning to near pre-pandemic levels. Analyzing immunization coverage in other areas of conflict is “a mixed picture,” O’Brien said.

That’s why, next week, I will leave the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, of which I was a co-founder almost 25 years ago, to open a new chapter in my philanthropy. The second the global agenda gets crowded, women and girls fall off. Decades of research on economics, well-being and governance make it clear that investing in women and girls benefits everyone. We know that economies with women’s full participation have more room to grow. That reducing the time women spend in poor health could add as much as $1 trillion to the global economy by 2040.

CNN —Genetically engineered mosquitoes have been released in the tiny East African country of Djibouti to combat a surge in malaria infections caused by an invasive vector. Unlike most malaria-transmitting mosquitoes in Africa that breed in rural areas, Anopheles Stephensi thrives in urban environments, intensifying the public health challenge for predominantly urban Djibouti. “This mosquito poses a huge threat to our fight against malaria,” said Grey Frandsen, CEO of US-owned biotechnology firm Oxitec, which developed the gene-modified mosquitoes released in Djibouti. ‘Using mosquitoes to fight mosquitoes’Dubbed a method that “uses mosquitoes to fight mosquitoes”, Oxitec’s genetic technology targets female mosquitoes, which are predominantly responsible for malaria transmission. Although the rollout of genetically modified mosquitoes in Djibouti is only the second in Africa, the idea is drawing more interest on the continent.
