Moore is the last person remaining on South Carolina’s death row to be convicted by a jury with no Black members, his defense attorneys say. “No other South Carolina death penalty case has involved an unarmed defendant who defended himself when the victim threatened him with a weapon,” they said in a statement. “He’s a human being who made mistakes,” Lyndall Moore told the AP. VANDALIA, Ohio (AP) — Former President Donald Trump claimed that he — not President Joe Biden — will protect Social Security and warned of a “bloodbath” if he loses in November as he campaigned for Senate candidate Bernie Moreno in Ohio. Moreno faces Secretary of State Frank LaRose and state Sen. Matt Dolan in Tuesday’s GOP primary. Trump also dismissed recent allegations against Moreno, comparing them to attacks he has faced through the years, including his criminal indictments. “You will not be able to have Social Security with this guy in office because he’s destroying the economics of our country. “I made a promise that I will always keep Social Security, Medicare.

It's a tall order for Haley as South Carolina prepares to vote on Saturday. Trump's 2016 primary win helped cement his front-runner status, and he boasts support from all of the state's top elected leaders and all but one of its congressional Republicans. “We should make sure we tell our partners it’s in their best interest to hold their own weight," Haley said Sunday. She said "Trump did it by saying he was going to encourage Putin to invade our allies. But over the weekend, Haley also made an appeal to South Carolinians who typically vote in Democratic primaries, for Saturday's vote.

Others in the GOP field have attacked transgender participation in athletics and proposed nationwide bans on affirming care for transgender minors. Transgender-related issues have become perhaps the biggest rallying call to Christian conservatives, more than abortion rights or same-sex marriage. As an ethical matter, I think it’s gross,” said Tim Miller, a former Republican political operative who worked as communications director for former Florida Gov. Several people interviewed at a recent Trump rally argued children were being wrongly confronted with issues of gender identity. Both Trump and Nikki Haley, his last major rival heading into South Carolina's Republican primary this coming Saturday, have leaned into anti-transgender rhetoric.

Haley's hometown was her first stop as she barnstormed across the state in the closing days ahead of South Carolina's Feb. 24 primary, aiming to cut into Donald Trump's popularity in the state. Back in Bamberg, the city's mayor, Nancy Foster, introduced Haley, recalling the former governor's parents as “gracious and accommodating." Bamberg County is unlikely to go into either Haley or Trump's win column for the general election. There were none of those references on Tuesday, as Foster welcomed Haley back home. “Nikki, Bamberg is so very proud of you, and we wish you well in all your endeavors," Foster said Tuesday.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Nikki Haley is launching a bus tour before South Carolina's Republican presidential primary on Feb. 24, hoping the two-week push will show the former governor's commitment to her home state heading into the first-in-the-South vote. Haley's bus tour kicks off Saturday, with its first stops planned in Newberry, Greenwood, Lexington and Orangeburg counties. The tour is aiming to ramp up interest in South Carolina's early-voting period, which begins Monday, according to Haley's campaign. It's also a complement to her repeated critiques of Trump for not spending time in the state, as she's crisscrossed it, holding nearly a dozen campaign events across South Carolina in the past two weeks. She's poked fun at Trump for declining to debate her, a tack also taken by a super political action committee supporting her bid.

Throughout her career, the South Carolina-born daughter of Indian immigrants has generally called out acts of individual prejudice and the people responsible. But Haley, now a Republican presidential candidate, has avoided denouncing society or groups of people as racist. Haley, who was Trump's U.N. ambassador, has described facing prejudice in her upbringing in rural Bamberg. “My parents never wanted us to think we lived in a racist country,” Haley told reporters recently. When asked by reporters whether Trump's criticisms of her are racist, Haley has instead portrayed him as “desperate to stop our momentum," using any means necessary to attack his opponents.

Now, South Carolina Democrats prepare to vote again in a week, serving for this cycle as the party's lead-off primary — a move both Biden and Clyburn supported. And there is precedent for the committee declaring a candidate the presumptive nominee before winning the 1,215 requisite delegates to clinch the nomination. In May 2016, then-RNC Chairman Reince Priebus declared Trump the presumptive nominee before he had the appropriate share of delegates wrapped up. Despite losing both the Iowa and New Hampshire contests to Trump, Haley has argued that her performance — outlasting all the other Trump rivals — shows the strength of her candidacy. Neither the Haley campaign nor the Trump campaign returned messages seeking comment on Thursday. “I’ve heard a lot of elected officials in the Republican Party, including the RNC chair, say, ‘We need to rally around a candidate.’ That this is going to be our candidate.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Donald Trump has picked up another endorsement from Nikki Haley's home state of South Carolina, with Rep. Nancy Mace backing the former president in this year's GOP presidential primary. Mace had stayed out of the 2024 Republican primary as two fellow South Carolinians — Haley and Sen. Tim Scott — entered the race last year. On Monday, a day ahead of the New Hampshire primary, Mace told The Associated Press that she was backing Trump over Haley, who lives in her congressional district and supported her in 2022 against a Trump-backed challenger. Over the weekend, Trump was joined by a slew of South Carolina leaders as he campaigned in New Hampshire, seen as yet another blow from South Carolina against Haley. Just two years ago, Mace and Haley were aligned in a congressional primary that tested Trump's heft in South Carolina, where his own 2016 presidential primary win helped cement his nomination.

Larry Hogan on Sunday endorsed Nikki Haley for the GOP nomination, saying he feels she “is the strongest chance” for Republicans to win in November. Hogan, one of his party’s fiercest Trump critics, had fueled speculation that he was preparing for his own third-party bid when he stepped down from the leadership of No Labels. Hogan told AP he had no interest in a “kamikaze mission.”In the past two presidential elections, Hogan said he did not vote for Trump, the party nominee. An incumbent hasn't lost his party's presidential nomination since Democrats passed over Franklin Pierce in 1856. Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860 marked the last time someone from a new party — in his case, the Republican Party — won the White House. But with the United States deeply divided and somewhat anxious about the prospect of another Biden-Trump campaign, third party candidates insist voters are restless enough to defy history. West announced last month that he no longer was running under the Green Party banner, but as an independent. Democrats assume that many of voters supporting a progressive environmental activist would likely have chosen Clinton if forced to choose between the major parties.
