“In North Carolina, that makes a lot of sense,” Harris said to Raiklin during the Q&A in front of dozens of GOP attendees. “In North Carolina, I mean, it’s legitimate. Currently, voting is going well in western North Carolina,” Harris said before pointing blame at Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., for voicing doubts about whether he would vote to certify a Trump election victory if there are anomalies. What happens when Elon Musk, Joe Rogan, Donald Trump and Tucker Carlson all call on this? “It’s really important to understand the mainstream Republican goal — to make Donald Trump President whether or not he wins the election,” tweeted Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn.

WASHINGTON — As Speaker Mike Johnson marks one year on the job Friday, he’s fighting hard to preserve House Republicans’ razor-thin majority — and his speakership. I’m going to be the speaker of the House,” Johnson said in a recent sit-down interview with NBC News at a campaign stop in Hellertown, Pennsylvania. "It's going to be a free-for-all" if Republicans lose the House and Trump loses the White House, a third House GOP lawmaker added. 2 GOP leader, Scalise also has not spoken publicly about what he’d run for in the minority. WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has endorsed Donald Trump for president this year. But in a new book, the powerful Kentucky Republican is quoted after the 2020 election disparaging Trump as a “despicable human being,” “stupid” and “ill-tempered." McConnell did not deny his statements about Trump as quoted in the book, when asked about it Thursday. In late December 2020, a month after Democrat Joe Biden defeated Trump in the presidential election, McConnell skewered Trump for holding up billions of dollars in Covid relief funds. Trump is “stupid as well as being ill-tempered and can’t even figure out where his own best interests lie,” McConnell said at the time.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Democrats have long tried to oust Rep. Scott Perry, the former head of the far-right Freedom Caucus and a staunch Donald Trump ally, in this Pennsylvania swing district. I think a record number of Black and African American voters, Jewish voters, union voters. Asked for comment, the Harris campaign referred to a memo to reporters Sunday pushing back on the GOP suggestion that the vice president's support is eroding among key groups. Trump and Republicans hope to see a big turnout from their base, namely white, non-college-educated, working-class voters. Johnson and his affiliated super PAC, the Congressional Leadership Fund, have raised a combined $266 million for House Republicans this cycle. Democrats are heavily focused on Pennsylvania as well, with all three top House leaders and the Harris campaign making stops here in recent weeks.

Though she is the incumbent and older than Mackenzie, Wild, 67, labeled Mackenzie, 42, a “career politician,” noting he has served in elected office for 12 years — twice as long as her. “She has a failed record on border security,” Mackenzie said in a Thursday interview after a rally with Johnson in Hellertown. “Every state is a border state, as we say, because they opened the border wide, and ya’ll, they did it intentionally, OK? WASHINGTON — Lawmakers averted a government shutdown 40 days before the election, but they’ll face another funding crunch right before the holidays and a new Congress and president take office. House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole, R-Okla., predicted that the two parties could come to a deal and avoid a shutdown in December. Congratulations, congressmen.”The full House has already passed five of the 12 appropriations bills for the new fiscal year. The Senate Appropriations Committee sent 11 out of 12 spending bills to the floor, where none of them have had votes. "What Leader Schumer should have done is brought the appropriations bills to the floor.

WASHINGTON — The House on Wednesday is poised to pass a funding bill to avert a government shutdown next week after it removed a proposal demanded by Donald Trump that would require Americans nationwide to show proof of citizenship to register to vote. House Republican leaders, facing defections within their ranks, plan to rely heavily on Democratic votes to approve the measure. He blamed Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for failing to take up the SAVE Act as a stand-alone measure in the Senate. “We passed the SAVE Act in the summer, and it’s been sitting on Chuck Schumer’s desk collecting dust; that is maddening to us,” Johnson said. “As both parties work to avoid a shutdown, we encourage House Republican leadership to get this bill to the floor and pass it quickly.

"The key to finishing our work this week will be bipartisan cooperation, in both chambers.”Last week, 14 House Republicans teamed with nearly all Democrats to torpedo a six-month funding bill that included the SAVE Act. “It’s, in my opinion, galactically stupid to do a government shutdown even after an election. Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader, took steps last week to tee up a vote on a government funding bill, preparing the upper chamber to step in if Republicans in the House flame out again. Some Republicans had pushed for the House to act quickly, worried that a funding bill passed by the Democratic-led Senate could be loaded up with extraneous spending. If Congress succeeds in passing the new House CR before the Oct. 1 deadline, they'll have another shutdown fight awaiting them in December.

Some lawmakers have called for more Secret Service funding, while others said the Secret Service could be more effective by shifting resources. But if it's signed into law, Trump and Harris would be granted the same standard of Secret Security protection as President Joe Biden. Biden said this week that the Secret Service "needs more help" and called on Congress to act. And both Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., have committed to getting the Secret Service what they need. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said he wants the Secret Service to provide “clarification of what the current practices are” to confirm that.

WASHINGTON — House Republicans on Wednesday are expected to derail their own plan to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month, with the party divided over the length of a short-term funding bill and what, if anything, should be attached to it. Democrats, who want a “clean” three-month funding patch with nothing attached, and nearly all plan to vote no. But the overwhelming majority of rank-and-file Republicans back Johnson’s move, saying holding the vote will put lawmakers on record. Everyone.”Davidson, who was ousted in July from the far-right House Freedom Caucus, lamented that Republicans have failed to unify behind a plan weeks before the election. That would buy time for bipartisan negotiators to strike a longer-term funding deal during the lame-duck session for fiscal year 2025 — if a short-term bill can pass the House.

WASHINGTON — Speaker Mike Johnson said the House will vote Wednesday on a six-month stopgap funding bill linked to legislation requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote — the same package he abruptly pulled off the floor last week amid growing GOP opposition. Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, spent the weekend calling members and trying to flip GOP defections to the yes column. "Mr. Speaker Johnson, you know as well as everyone else that your plan is a no-go as currently written. A six-month CR with poison pills is not going to fly in a narrowly divided government," Schumer said. "If the hard right thinks that we will willingly give them leverage to ram Project 2025 down the American people's throats early next year by agreeing to a six-month CR, they are dreaming," he added.

WASHINGTON — Congress is considering boosting funding for the Secret Service after what the FBI called an apparent second attempt on former President Donald Trump’s life in 10 weeks. "Nobody's going to want to deny the Secret Service the funding that it needs as long as it justifies it." And Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, the 2016 Democratic vice presidential nominee, agreed that both parties would be "very amenable" to any Secret Service funding request. Trump's Secret Service detail on Sunday thwarted what the FBI characterized as a second apparent assassination attempt on him while he was golfing at his club in West Palm Beach, Florida. “One thing I want to make clear, the Secret Service needs more help.

WASHINGTON — Divided House Republicans stumbled last week in their effort to pass Speaker Mike Johnson’s bill to fund the government. “A government shutdown is always a bad idea, at any time,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told reporters. The speaker’s initial strategy had called for a six-month continuing resolution (CR) tied to the SAVE Act, legislation backed by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump requiring proof of citizenship to vote. It’s unclear whether Johnson this week will try to tweak the SAVE Act approach or try something entirely different. Republicans see the SAVE Act as a mechanism to try to force politically vulnerable Democrats into a difficult position.

Following Donald Trump’s lead, Johnson has tied a six-month funding bill to the SAVE Act, which would overhaul voting laws to require people to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Democrats and some Republicans are pushing for a “clean” funding bill that would keep the government open until December, after the election. The government will shut down at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 1 unless Republicans and Democrats strike a deal to extend funding. Because of their miniscule majority, House Republicans can only afford four GOP defections if all lawmakers vote. “I’m a firm NO on bankrupting the nation and a YES on election integrity,” Mills said.

WASHINGTON — Despite mounting opposition from his own party, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., vowed Tuesday to stay the course and put his government funding package on the House floor on Wednesday. His initial strategy to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month is expected to fail and deal House Republicans an embarrassing blow. Due to their paper-thin majority, Republicans can afford only a handful of GOP defections on the vote, and many more than that have publicly voiced their opposition. “I am in this to win this,” Johnson told reporters at his weekly news conference. Afterward, the speaker added: “We are going to put the SAVE Act and the CR together, and we’re going to move that through the process.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson’s strategy to tie a short-term government funding bill to a Donald Trump-backed proposal to overhaul voting laws was on life support Monday after a band of conservative rebels vowed to vote no on the package. Without a stopgap funding bill, money will run out and the federal government will shut down at the end of the month. Because of the GOP’s razor-thin majority, Johnson, R-La., can afford only four Republican defections if all members vote. Mills slammed Johnson's strategy as a “farce” and said it would do nothing to secure the southern border. Instead, they are pushing for a "clean CR" — short-term funding with nothing attached to it.

A shutdown would close federal agencies and national parks, while limiting public services and furloughing millions of workers just weeks before the election. House Republicans have now settled on some lines of attack, which they'll highlight in politically charged GOP hearings and investigations into both Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. House GOP probesAfter spending much of the 118th Congress focused on investigating Biden, House Republicans are now shifting their focus to Democrats’ new presidential ticket. Republicans are also focusing on the botched U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, which the Trump campaign has criticized Harris over. Pascrell checked himself into a hospital on July 14 with a fever, which his staff said may have been caused by a respiratory illness. At 87 years old, Pascrell is the second-oldest House member, only behind retiring Rep. Grace Napolitano, D-Calif. The GOP’s 2024 party platform calls for the repeal of President Joe Biden’s executive order on AI, which Republicans say "hinders AI innovation." Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer speaks to NBC News from the balcony of his Capitol office on Thursday, Aug. 1. “We have lots of AI proposals in the defense bill because AI has national security concerns,” Schumer told NBC News.
