The question for Ukraine is whether Kursk will fare better than Germany's Battle of the Bulge. AdvertisementWhen Ukraine unleashed its Kursk offensive in August, it wasn't just the Russians who were surprised. By massing forces for offensives in eastern Ukraine, this thinned out the rest of the 600-mile front line, including the Kursk region. For example, "Ukraine's military announced the 61st Mechanized Brigade would be moving to Vovchansk, a city in the northern sector of the fighting in eastern Ukraine," said TRADOC. Allied cryptographers had broken high-level German radio codes (the "Ultra" program), but German forces employed radio silence, and orders were conveyed by courier and telephone.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy unveiled his much anticipated “victory plan” on Wednesday, calling on his allies to take urgent steps to bolster Kyiv at a precarious moment in a bid to end the war with Russia next year. His plan proposed establishing a “comprehensive non-nuclear strategic deterrence package” inside Ukraine to protect against threats from Russia and to destroy its military power. Zelenskyy said it was imperative Kyiv’s partners remained united. “If we start moving on this victory plan now, we may be able to end the war by next year at the latest,” he said. Zelenskyy said he would travel to a summit of European Union leaders in Brussels on Thursday to present his plan.

KYIV, Ukraine — Russian troops on Wednesday took charge of the eastern Ukrainian town of Vuhledar, a bastion that had resisted intense attacks since Russia launched its full-scale assault in 2022. Russian Telegram channels, however, published video of troops waving the Russian tricolor flag over shattered buildings. Russia has been using pincer tactics to trap and then constrict Ukrainian strongholds. Russian bloggers said Russia could now try to push towards Velyka Novosilka, just over 20 miles to the west. Ukraine narrowly won the battle of Irpin in the war's earliest days. That's the conclusion of American and British experts who examined the fighting along the Irpin River northwest of Kyiv. "The Battle of Irpin River was a close-run thing," wrote Richard Sladden, Liam Collins and Alfred Connable in an article in British Army Review, a British military magazine. An attack in the east and south of Ukraine was the most likely course of action, therefore Ukrainian forces were primarily arrayed against this." Russian forces weren't prepared to rapidly deploy pontoon bridges to replace those across the Irpin River that Ukrainian troops had blown up.

The current training period for new recruits is three months, which includes one month of basic military training and two months of vocational training, according to Ukrainian news outlet Ukrainska Pravda. The news of the extended training period comes after months of reports have shown that Ukraine's soldiers do not have the adequate training required to be on the front lines. And according to a June Washington Post report, Ukrainian commanders often had to dedicate time to training recruits basic skills like how to shoot. Ukrainian soldiers, according to the Kyiv Independent, are worried that the army will run out of trained people to continue fighting.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has long conjured images of war that Europe thought had been consigned to the history books. Several Ukrainian military units have shared videos of these drones in action in recent days. Ukraine’s 108th separate mountain assault battalion shared another video over the weekend, saying that its drone pilots had flown the “dragon drones” over Russian positions. Video purportedly shows a Ukrainian "dragon drone" shared on Telegram by Zelenskyy's chief adviser Andriy Yermak on Monday. They also include at least one instance of the fiery drones being used in Russia’s border Kursk region, which Ukrainian troops invaded last month, he said.

The US-made armored vehicles, which offer maneuverability, versatility, and sufficient firepower, have proven valuable to Ukraine efforts on the battlefield — more so than the main battle tanks and other heavy armor it's received. The US announced a new military aid package for Ukraine valued at $250 million to meet Ukraine's critical defense needs. One reason is that its received more Bradleys than it has main battle tanks from Western nations. The video, released Wednesday by the Kremlin, showed the Russian president was not happy with news from the southern region of Kursk. An expeditionary forceUkrainian troops, even if reinforced, cannot expect to occupy several hundred square kilometers of Russian territory. As the Ukrainian soldiers raced through the ruins of the destroyed city under the spying eye of Russian drones, the skeletal remains of blasted-out buildings cast eerie shadows in the light of a full moon. Burned-out cars littered the road next to craters from artillery strikes in this city, Toretsk, in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, that is now on the front line of the war with Russia. The hot July night smelled of violence — smoke and dust from destroyed buildings mixed with the sulfurous scent of explosives. The brigade allowed us to accompany them recently to view the destruction of Toretsk up close and the challenges Ukrainian forces face as they battle to keep control of the city. Ukraine’s campaign to replenish its war-weary troops is ramping up and should help fill personnel gaps on the front line in the coming weeks, according to Ukrainian officials, soldiers and military analysts. The mobilization push has so far not significantly bolstered Ukraine’s forces on the battlefield, those people say. And some recruits who have arrived are not physically fit for combat, members of Ukrainian units have noted. But several brigades deployed on the battlefield have reported an increase in the number of conscripts they have received in recent weeks. They said they were hoping that the influx of soldiers would help Ukraine to stabilize the front line this summer.
