While mortgage rates are most closely linked to 10-year Treasury bonds, they tend to move in tandem with the Federal Reserve's benchmark interest rate. Consequently, a rate cut is likely to lower mortgage rates later this year. That's potentially good news for homebuyers, since interest rate cuts would likely make monthly mortgage payments a bit more affordable. Most major housing organizations expect mortgage rates to drop by the end of the year. Mortgage rate forecasts for the end of 2024 differ slightly.

UBS executives covering fixed income and equity strategies outlined in a recent note four different scenarios come November: a blue sweep, a Biden presidency with a split Congress, a red sweep, and a Trump presidency with a split Congress. The two overwhelmingly likely outcomes would be a Biden presidency with a divided Congress (40%) and a Trump presidency with a Republican Congress (45%), per UBS. A Biden victory with a divided CongressA Biden presidency will likely usher in increased tax rates and regulatory oversight, UBS said. A Trump presidency combined with a Republican Congress would mean an extension of the current lower marginal tax rates, the bank said. While antitrust regulation will likely ease under Trump, he's hardly a Big Tech supporter: Trump sued Facebook, Google, and Twitter (now X) in 2021.

London CNN —An unexploded bomb from World War II has been taken out to sea and detonated after being found in a garden in the English city of Plymouth, authorities said Friday. The decision to detonate the bomb at sea was taken “after considering all options, including a controlled detonation on site,” according to a government statement. This war-time bomb has really brought out war-time spirit, people coming together to really support each other and whilst it has been really tough – we got through it,” said Tudor Evans, leader of Plymouth City Council. Evans thanked the bomb experts for their bravery and for “putting their lives on the line” while they were removing the bomb. The device was discovered on Tuesday in a garden, the Plymouth City Council said in a post on social media.

But rather than just selling out of those stocks to help dilute those holdings, consider donating a few shares to charity. But giving some away duts the size of the position in a portfolio and skirts capital gains taxes. Those stocks are up more than 200% and 62%, respectively, this year, and are good candidates for some charitable giving, she said. Investors are encouraged to get to know the charitable giving deduction. Investors can also simplify their charitable giving by making direct gifts of appreciated assets to a donor-advised fund.

Circuit Court of Appeals found that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission lacked the authority under federal law to issue permits for private, temporary nuclear waste storage sites. Circuit Judge James Ho, writing for the court, agreed with Texas that the Atomic Energy Act does not give the agency the broad authority "to license a private, away-from-reactor storage facility for spent nuclear fuel." Abbott opposed the plan, saying he would not let Texas become "America's nuclear waste dumping ground." The plan for a temporary facility was devised in order to address a growing nuclear waste problem in the United States. The Andrews County site was chosen after efforts to build a permanent storage facility in Nevada fell apart amid fierce local opposition.

REUTERS/Michelle McLoughlin/File PhotoNEW YORK, Aug 4 (Reuters) - A divided federal appeals court on Friday rejected a challenge to a Connecticut law that ended the state's decades-old religious exemptions from immunization requirements for children in schools, colleges and day care. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan said ending religious exemptions, while still allowing medical exemptions, was a rational means to promote health and safety by reducing the potential spread of vaccine-preventable diseases. He said many U.S. courts have reviewed vaccination mandates for children that lack religious exemptions, and only one, in Mississippi, has ever found constitutional problems. Five other U.S. states--California, Maine, Mississippi, New York and West Virginia--also lack religious exemptions. Connecticut's law, signed by Governor Ned Lamont, does not apply to children from kindergarten to 12th grade who previously had received religious exemptions.

Short-term Treasury bills have garnered investors' attention as yields pop amid the Federal Reserve's rate hiking campaign and debt ceiling tensions in Washington. This doesn't necessarily mean it's time to cut bait on your short-term bond holdings, however. Issues with longer duration are likely to see greater price fluctuation in response to changes in interest rates. The inverted yield curve also resulted in higher yields for short-term issues, but sharp price declines. Some investors built ladders — that is, a portfolio of bonds with different maturities — to take advantage of those higher yields.

Income-focused investors seeking yield and safety in Treasury bills are likely nervous as debt ceiling rhetoric heats up in Washington, but they should take a breather before they dump these assets. In the short-term Treasury market, investors are already showing some signs of anxiety. In that case, holders of short-term T-bills could see declines in their portfolio values as yields spike, he added. Review your holdings Now could be a good time to review your bond holdings, particularly the short-term T-bills that are seeing a big jump in yields. But the longer-term advice is to snap up longer-dated bonds to prepare for the day the Federal Reserve starts to dial back its tight monetary policy.

Shipping industry grapples with ways to cut cargo fires at sea

LONDON, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Global shipping companies are exploring ways to boost safety in transporting cargoes as risks grow from fires erupting inside containers or in cars at sea, officials said on Wednesday. Shipping transports around 90% of world trade onboard different vessels including container and Ro-Ro ships with trade routes getting busier. "The main root cause for cargo fires on container ships is the integrity of dangerous goods throughout the supply chain. Therefore it is a problem that can only be improved through industry wide solutions," Maersk's Aslak Ross said separately in a statement. Wearing a green sweater - the Sandy Hook school color - he walked the memorial, stopping at the names of the children who now would have been 16 and 17. Wall Street is warning of a stormy start to 2023 , but investors should prepare to find pockets of opportunity and ensure their portfolio is running efficiently. Bond prices have tumbled alongside stocks, such that even the iShares Core Growth Allocation ETF – which is based on a 60/40 split between equities and fixed income – has dropped nearly 15%. Higher yields on fixed income The silver lining of the Federal Reserve's interest rate hiking campaign is the rising yield investors can find on even the most boring fixed income offerings. Meanwhile, Series I savings bonds that are issued from Nov. 1 to April 30, 2023 have a current interest rate of 6.89%. Short-term Treasurys are another attractive option for your fixed income sleeve.

Investments in the U.S. Treasury's Series I savings bonds have surged this year as prices climbed and so far show few signs of easing. I bonds offer holders a standard fixed rate together with a variable rate that shifts every six months, the latter depending on the latest consumer price index numbers. Even putting a few thousand dollars in the bond could offer a decent cash cushion for times ahead, she said. While a safe haven for cash, I bonds are not an alternative to investing, McLoughlin said. Despite the market's dismal performance this year, equities offer much better returns for those with longer time horizons, she said.
If you buy an I bond before Oct. 28, you will lock in the 9.62% interest rate for six months. How to buy I bonds I bonds can only be bought on the government website, TreasuryDirect.com , which has been recently updated . "If you are going to need it in the next year or two, that is a great interest rate you can make." However, a diversified bond portfolio will likely provide the same results over the long term, she added. Another thing to think about is how much you are holding in I bonds, McLoughlin said.
