CNN —A controversial five-second penalty for McLaren’s Lando Norris saw the English driver lose ground in his pursuit of Max Verstappen’s drivers’ championship title, on a day when Charles Leclerc eased to victory in the United States Grand Prix. Having relinquished pole position immediately at the start of the race, Norris overtook Verstappen to take third in lap 52, but was adjudged to have gained an advantage by leaving the track. The resulting penalty saw Verstappen promoted back to a podium finish, and Norris relegated down to fourth. Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo was dismissed Thursday by the Red Bull Racing junior team effectively immediately, ending his second stint in the sport with an unusual mid-season departure. CNN —British driver Lando Norris recorded a comfortable victory at the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, putting a dent into Max Verstappen’s lead atop the drivers’ world championship. It was another excellent race for McLaren, following a victory for Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri in Azerbaijan last week. It was Norris’ third win of the season, cutting reigning champion Verstappen’s lead at the top of the drivers’ championship to 52 points after the Dutch driver finished second. “[It was] an amazing race,” Norris told Sky Sports after the race. Lewis Hamilton surprised Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff when he broke the news over breakfast that he was leaving the F1 team for Ferrari but there is “no grudge” between them, Wolff said Friday. Hamilton is leaving Mercedes at the end of the upcoming season to join Ferrari for 2025 in a move announced Thursday. CNN —It has been a while since Red Bull failed to win a Formula One race so the Singapore Grand Prix gave fans some unexpected variety when Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz secured victory in Sunday’s night race. Such has been Red Bull’s dominance, the last time one of their drivers failed to win a race was in November 2022, when Mercedes’ George Russell won the Brazilian Grand Prix. Red Bull’s qualifying struggles opened the door for others on Sunday and it was Sainz who capitalized, claiming victory from pole position to end Red Bull’s hopes of winning every race this year. McLaren’s Lando Norris was second, while Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton was third, finishing over a second behind the Spaniard who celebrated his second win for Ferrari. “We nailed the race,” Sainz told reporters.

Red Bull have won every race this season (11) and, unsurprisingly, lead the constructors’ championship by a handsome margin – 208 points ahead of Mercedes in second.
