DARIEN, Ga. — The seven people killed Saturday in a gangway collapse on a Georgia barrier island were all in their 70s, except for one woman in her 90s, the coroner said Sunday. A portion of the gangway which collapsed Saturday afternoon remains visible on Sapelo Island in McIntosh county, Ga., on Sunday. Sapelo Island ferry service will resume Monday using an auxiliary dock, Department of Natural Resources spokesperson Tyler Jones said Sunday. It’s not clear if any of those who died in Saturday's collapse were Gullah Geechee people. Meanwhile, Grovner said, survivors of those who died Saturday will be embraced by the Gullah Geechee and their longstanding fight to exist.

Seven people are believed dead after a gangway that's part of a marina collapsed on Sapelo Island, Georgia, on Saturday. "The gangway has been secured on Sapelo Island and the incident is currently under investigation." Brian Kemp said he, his wife and daughters are "heartbroken by today's tragedy on Sapelo Island." The Sepalo Island Cultural and Revitalization Society organized its annual Cultural Day celebration on the island on Saturday, calling it "our most celebrated event." Sapelo Island, on the Atlantic Coast, is about 72 miles south of Savannah.

A Florida woman was arrested Monday in Georgia on motor vehicle, marijuana, and other misdemeanor state charges just one day before her scheduled voluntary surrender to begin a monthlong jail term for stealing and selling the diary of President Joe Biden's daughter Ashley Biden, prosecutors revealed in a New York federal court filing. Harris, 42, was sentenced in April to one month in jail and three months of home detention. She had been scheduled to surrender Tuesday at noon to begin serving her jail sentence. "The defendant is currently in state custody in connection with those charges." The arrest report, obtained by CNBC by the McIntosh County Sheriff's Office, shows that Harris was arrested at 11:30 p.m.

Black residents of the Hogg Hummock community on Sapelo Island sat mostly silent as McIntosh County commissioners scheduled a Tuesday vote on the proposal. “This plan will be be a giant step in the destruction of the culture of Hogg Hummock,” said Commissioner Roger Lotson, whose district includes Sapelo Island. In 2012, dozens of Hogg Hummock residents and landowners appealed tax increases caused by soaring property values. The current county ordinance limits homes in Hogg Hummock to 1,400 square feet (130 square meters) of heated and air-conditioned space. A woman whose dismembered body was found last month in southeast Georgia still hasn't been identified, and officials are asking for the public's help to determine who she was. The woman was found Dec. 2 in the woods of a hunting club in the city of Riceboro in Liberty County. “Additional remains were discovered within a three-mile radius on the hunting club property in Liberty County, as well as McIntosh County. The woman was about 5-10, weighed between 185 pounds and 200 pounds and had brown hair and eyes. Anyone with information is urged to call the bureau’s office in Statesboro at 912-871-1121 or the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office at 912-876-4555.
