Bose Corp. will purchase the McIntosh Group, a deal that will give the Massachusetts-based company control of one of the most storied names in high-end audio. McIntosh will continue to manufacture the high-end audio equipment it is known for out of its longtime headquarters in New York, Bose CEO Lila Snyder said. The deal also includes Sonus Faber, a company that makes high-end speakers by hand in Italy. The purchase of the two audio workshops provides Bose access into the high-end luxury audio market, Snyder told CNBC in an interview. McIntosh has been making high-end amplifiers and other audio equipment since 1949, and one of its devices can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

CNN —A rare knife handle in the shape of a gladiator has been discovered at Hadrian’s Wall in the north of England, shining a new light on the celebrity status of the ancient Roman combatants. The secutor gladiator depicted on the knife handle wears a helmet, holds a big shield and has his left hand out, which would have been holding a sword. The knife handle was discovered in a river at Corbridge Roman Town on Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, England. The 2,000-year-old knife handle was found in the Tyne River at Corbridge Roman Town on Hadrian’s Wall, a defensive barrier built by the occupying Romans in northeast England. “This beautifully made knife handle is a testament to how pervasive this celebrity culture was, reaching all the way to Hadrian’s Wall at the very edge of the Roman Empire,” she added.

LONDON British telecom firms Vodafone and Three's multibillion-pound merger could go ahead if the companies adopt a series of proposed remedies to clear competition concerns, regulators said Tuesday. Vodafone has previously said that the combined entity, once merged, would invest £11 billion ($14.46 billion) into U.K. telecommunications infrastructure. Vodafone has also said it disagrees with earlier findings from the CMA that the merger would lead to price increases for consumers. It says the merger wouldn't pricing strategy and would enhance competition between mobile virtual network operators, or MVNOs. Parts of Canada’s Boreal Forest Are Burning Faster Than They Can Regrow The delicate balance of one the planet’s largest natural systems for storing carbon depends on the humble black spruce tree. The boreal forests are the largest forests in the world, and in Western Canada they evolved to burn once every century or so. What was troubling, Dr. Baltzer noted, is that fire isn’t supposed to make life harder for the black spruce tree. Any imbalance in this tug of war between life and death can threaten the boreal forests’ ability to store heat-trapping carbon. Given how huge the boreal forests are, her research could help shed light on which parts of the ecosystem were most important to protect.

Biles held off a spirited challenge from brilliant Brazilian Rebeca Andrade, who once again won silver, and Biles’ teammate Suni Lee took the bronze. She later celebrated her silver medal with them by running a lap of the entire arena floor carrying the country’s flag. Canadian 17-year-old superstar Summer McIntosh also won her second gold medal of the Games.

Paris CNN —The Paris Olympics are not yet one week old but 17-year-old Summer McIntosh already has two gold medals. As for McIntosh, she climbed out of the pool, raised a hand to the crowd, and was met with a roar of approval. A few weeks short of her 18th birthday, she is fast becoming a star of the Paris Olympics. “Pretty surreal, I’m really happy with the time,” McIntosh told reporters after the race. “It’s pretty cool winning the 200 fly because that, by far, was her main event,” added McIntosh.

On Thursday, Biles and Lee will both return to Bercy Arena eyeing an individual medal in the event. Biles, the 2016 all-around gold medalist in Rio de Janeiro, led the U.S. women to their first team gold since Brazil on Tuesday. She led the individual all-around competition after qualifying and enters as a heavy favorite to capture her sixth gold medal. McIntosh, 17, won her first Olympic gold medal Monday in the grueling women’s 400-meter individual medley.
