Three Democratic senators are asking McDonald’s about its menu price hikes in recent years, arguing that the increases are higher than they should be — even with inflation and rising operating costs. McDonald’s prices have raised eyebrows. It also asked whether McDonald’s executives received bonuses or other incentive-based compensation from 2020 to 2024 and whether any incentives were based on executives’ ability to increase per-customer profits. Large corporations “owe consumers transparency when they hike menu prices,” Wyden said in a statement to NBC News. “Fast food chains, like McDonald’s, are raking in profits while families struggle to buy meals that are meant to be affordable and accessible.”

New York CNN —Wednesday is National Cheeseburger Day, with some of the biggest chains offering some much-needed discounts amid consumer complaints about rising prices. It’s part of company’s string of deals to kickstart slumping sales, including recently extending its popular $5 value meal until December. Fast food has been a low-profit margin business with little customer loyalty. McDonald’s pricey burgers have become a flashpoint of criticism and a symbol of elevated fast food prices. So deals are particularly crucial to fast food companies at the moment to lure customers back.

CNN —Inflation has caught up with McDonald’s, and budget-conscious Americans are looking elsewhere for their fast-food fix. The tough environment for McDonald’s wasn’t limited to the United States: Sales at stores open for at least a year fell 1% globally. The plan focuses on value meal plans like the popular $5 meal introduced earlier this summer. He pointed to McDonald’s new emphasis on chicken, which is now on par with beef sales at restaurants. Whether or not that viral post was the final straw for McDonald’s customers, Americans have been punishing the company ever since.

But on Monday, in honor of National Cheeseburger Day, McDonald’s customers will be able to get a double cheeseburger for just 50 cents, only 45 cents more than what the chain’s original hamburger cost in 1948. According to the company’s official website, a McDonald’s cheeseburger typically can cost as low as $1 and as high as $2.79. And Burger King would likely be forced to abdicate his throne if the monarch did nothing for National Cheeseburger Day. Loyal customers who join the chain’s Royal Perks program will get a free cheeseburger — but only if they spend at least a dollar. Many burger chains have offered deals on National Cheeseburger Day in past years.

New York CNN —McDonald’s, which has been focusing on upgrading its core items to boost sales, is rolling out a series of changes designed to improve its signature burgers. The Big Mac will come with more Big Mac sauce. “In an environment where our customers are looking for the simple and familiar, our core menu items have never been more relevant,” he said. McDonald's USAFocusing on promoting its core menu items, rather than introducing new products, is a way to keep processes simpler and reduce friction in the kitchen. “Throughout 2022, some of our most successful campaign platforms brought our customers closer to the core menu items,” Kempczinski said during the January call.
