CNN —Israel’s war conduct in Gaza “is consistent with the characteristics of genocide,” including mass civilian casualties and using starvation as a weapon, according to a new United Nations Special Committee report released Thursday. The UN committee added that Israeli officials have publicly supported policies to destroy “vital water, sanitation and food systems” in Gaza as well as prevent access to fuel. The UN Special Committee is composed of three UN member states, including Malaysia, Senegal and Sri Lanka. But the US view is a stark contrast with the bleak picture on the ground, where much of the aid that reaches Gaza is not being distributed. “We have not seen any aid, and no one has sent us food,” 63-year-old Palestinian Umm Muhammad Al-At’out told CNN this week.

CNN —An armed group has taken control of a military post in central Bolivia, the country’s armed forces said on Friday. According to the Bolivian military’s statement, the “irregular armed group” kidnapped military personnel and seized weapons and ammunition from the base situated near the central Bolivian city of Cochabamba. Bolivian president Luis Arce said that the armed group was “affiliated” with former president Evo Morales, but did not offer evidence for the claim. The blockades, which Bolivian police said involve “violent armed groups,” have led to food and fuel shortages in some cities. Throughout the past year, Morales has clashed with sitting president Arce – his fellow MAS party member and former ally – as both politicians battle for reelection in 2025. The blockades were established after the government announced a judicial investigation into the former president over an alleged case of human trafficking. CNN —At least 70 people, including three infants, were killed in a gang attack in the central Haiti town of Pont Sondé, the United Nations Human Rights Office said in a statement on Friday. Members of the “Gran Grif” gang used automatic rifles to kill at least 70 people on Thursday, including 10 women and three infants, according to the UN. The attack occurred in Haiti’s Artibonite department, a crucial agricultural center about 50 miles north of Port-au-Prince, where gang violence has continued to spread, according to the UN. At least 16 people were seriously injured in the attack, including two gang members hit during an exchange of fire with Haitian police, the UN said. “Despite an extremely difficult security context, the victims of this attack are being cared for by local institutions,” the ministry said.

CNN —The woman mayor of a town in western Mexico was shot dead Monday, authorities said, just hours after the country elected its first female president in a race marred by deadly attacks on candidates. Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa, mayor of Cotija in Michoacán state, was walking from a gym back to her house with her bodyguard when they were shot by people in a white van, the state attorney general said in a statement. Both Sánchez Figueroa and her bodyguard later died in hospital, it said, adding that an investigation has been launched. According to the think tank Mexico Evalua, around 95% of all crimes nationwide went unsolved in the country in 2022. CNN —The Israeli military announced Friday that it has recovered the bodies of three hostages from a tunnel in the Gaza Strip. The hostages were identified as Shani Louk, Amit Bouskila, and Itshak Gelernter, IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a press conference in Tel Aviv. CNN —A gas explosion in Kenya’s capital on Thursday night killed at least two people and injured 222 others, according to authorities in the East African country. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has fired several employees in the wake of the allegations, which have not been made public. UNRWA was established by the United Nations after the 1948 Arab-Israeli war to provide humanitarian assistance for displaced Palestinians. At least 152 UNRWA staffers have been killed in Gaza since the Israel-Hamas war began, according to the agency. Neither Israel nor UNRWA have specified the nature of the alleged involvement of UNRWA employees in the events of October 7, nor did they specify the number of employees allegedly involved. “A case was compiled by the Intelligence Directorate, incriminating several UNRWA employees for their alleged involvement in the massacre, along with evidence pointing to the use of UNRWA facilities for terrorist purposes,” the IDF statement said.

CNN —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected Hamas’ conditions for an end to the Gaza war in exchange for the release of hostages held there, labeling such a prospect as “surrender.”In order to release the remaining hostages, Netanyahu said Hamas was demanding an end to the war, the release of Palestinian prisoners and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. Out of the 253 hostages Israel says Hamas seized on October 7, Israel believes that 132 are still in Gaza, of whom 104 are thought to be alive.
