In December 1982, four armed men burst into a bodega in Brooklyn serving as a front for marijuana dealing and ordered two men working inside to hand over drugs. The men then shot the clerks, killing one of them, Jairam Gangaram, a 32-year-old father of four girls. Five years later, a jury convicted Detroy Livingston of second degree murder following the testimony of a troubled young woman with an addiction to crack cocaine who claimed to be at the scene. Mr. Livingston, who had rejected a plea deal that would have set him free within 12 years, was sentenced to 25 years to life. On Friday, prosecutors from the office of the Brooklyn district attorney, Eric Gonzalez, agreed that Mr. Livingston’s conviction should be vacated and the charges against him dismissed.

Tom McClean has a shave in the middle of the Atlantic. Photo: Tom McCleanIn the summer of 1969, John Fairfax was somewhere in the middle of the Caribbean. He had set off from Spain’s Canary Islands some six months earlier, headed toward Florida in his 24-foot boat, Britannia. Meanwhile Tom McClean was heading in the opposite direction, from Newfoundland to Ireland, in his 20-foot Super Silver. Both men hoped to be the first to row solo across the Atlantic.

Eight days later, another Briton, Tom McClean, pulled his dory up a deserted beach in Blacksod Bay, Ireland, having rowed solo across the Atlantic in the opposite direction. While Fairfax was acclaimed and feted, McClean walked to the closest pub, alone. During his ordeal, Fairfax had no idea someone else was rowing across the Atlantic in the opposite direction, thousands of miles to the north. McClean, on the other hand, was acutely aware of his rival and brooded about him the whole way. While celebrated in nautical circles, neither man became well known, nor have their stories been told together in a single book, until now.
