New York CNN —The news was so shocking that some “Morning Joe” viewers probably spit out their coffee. MSNBC co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski “went to Mar-a-Lago to meet personally” with President-elect Donald Trump, Brzezinski revealed at the beginning of Monday’s show. We are not here to defend or normalize Donald Trump,” Scarborough said. When Trump entered the presidential race in 2015, he frequently called into “Morning Joe” and schmoozed with the hosts. Trump’s defenders said he was just fighting “fire with fire” because “Morning Joe” was so critical of him.

ANNOUNCER:From NBC News in Washington, the longest-running show in television history, this is Meet the Press with Kristen Welker. In a Meet the Press interview during his 2016 run, he suggested that his insurgent bid could generate cross-party appeal. AMY WALTER:Yeah, and the other thing that, you know, Democrats have been dining off the anti-Trump coalition now since 2017. RAMESH PONNURU:I think Democrats wildly overestimated the power of the abortion issue to drive candidate choice as opposed to referendum. There would be pressure on the president, President Biden, to not run for reelection.

The reality is that both parties learn lessons from losing elections that apply only in the short term — say, from one presidential election to the next midterm or from one midterm to the next presidential election. Not anymore — it’s why Democrats usually overperform in special elections, with more devoted “every election” voters right now. Meanwhile, in the non-battlegrounds, which were more affected by the basic “mood music” of the election, Democrats were shellacked. The seeds of discontent with this version of the Democratic Party can be traced back a decade to Obama’s decision to anoint Hillary Clinton as his successor. CNN —Donald Trump believes presidents have almost absolute power. In his second term, there will be few political or legal restraints to check him. It’s not guaranteed that just because Trump has massive power he will spurn constitutional checks and balances. No other president has come into office armed with a Supreme Court ruling that grants significant immunity to presidents for official acts. Attempts to prosecute Trump’s political foes on spurious grounds, meanwhile, could theoretically see mass resignations of Justice Department staff.

And it’s particularly notable after the Republican party’s high-profile failure to repeal key parts of the health care law during Trump’s first term in office. “Health care reform is going to be a big part of the agenda,” Johnson said at the event.
