Never has a chess world championship titleholder seemed as vulnerable. On Monday, Ding Liren, the reigning world champion, will begin a match in Singapore to defend the title against the 18-year-old player Gukesh Dommaraju. His results were far below his previous level and also below the level of what might be expected of a world champion. A month later, in a Chess 960 tournament in Germany, he lost 10 of 13 games. (Chess 960 is a variant in which the pieces on the back ranks are shuffled into one of 960 possible starting configurations.)

One of the most iconic catches in NFL history — a play that would change Odell Beckham Jr.’s life — started with a misunderstanding and a poor route. Odell Beckham Jr. catches a one-handed touchdown and it is arguably one of the most iconic catches in NFL history. The two would spend hours outside their college dorm, throwing footballs to each other and practicing one-handed catches. When it did, Beckham told his teammate that the catch “changed his life.”Zay Flowers' locker is right next to Odell Beckham Jr.'s in the Ravens locker room. He has the one-handed catch against the Cowboys.

WASHINGTON — A triumphant President-elect Donald Trump huddled with House Republicans before their leadership elections Wednesday and threw his support behind Speaker Mike Johnson, a key ally, as the GOP prepares for unified control of government next year. Trump, the 45th and future 47th president, got multiple standing ovations from rank-and-file Republicans at the meeting. After the event with Republicans, Trump headed to the White House for a meeting with President Joe Biden. House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole, R-Okla., said Trump's meeting with Republicans was less about specific policy proposals and more of a "rah-rah address." Even before Trump's endorsement, Republicans were expected to nominate Johnson to continue as speaker in the 119th Congress.

A trove of 2,584 silver coins from the time of the Norman Conquest has been bought in the United Kingdom for more than $5 million — making it the country's highest-value discovery ever made by treasure hunters. The coins were purchased by the U.K.’s South West Heritage Trust, an independent organization that supports historical sites, with funding from two charities, the National Lottery and the Art Fund. The South West Heritage Trust's curator of archaeology, Amal Khreisheh, holds one of the uncovered Norman pennies. The coins were likely to have been buried for safekeeping, a common method in the 11th century. That they were never dug up by their owner suggests to historians that they may have been lost or abandoned because of the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest.

Most of the fake electors and election deniers did not respond to CNN’s request for comment. MichiganOut of the seven states Trump targeted in 2020, Michigan’s slate of Republican electors for 2024 has – by far – the largest share of election deniers and 2020 fake electors. Five of the 2020 fake electors from the state were tapped to serve as 2024 electors. Thanks to this hedged language, the 2020 fake electors in Pennsylvania weren’t charged. WisconsinTo settle a civil lawsuit brought by Wisconsin’s real 2020 Democratic electors, the state’s fake GOP electors from 2020 agreed to stay out of the 2024 election process.

The Summary Forecasts for hurricanes Helene and Milton were highly accurate. Nearly five days before Hurricane Milton hit Florida, National Hurricane Center forecasters predicted its track within just 12 miles of where the storm later made landfall. And yet, at a time when hurricane forecasts are at their most accurate, some meteorologists say they’ve never faced so much skepticism, hatred and conspiracy-minded pushback. They take it personally.”Hurricane forecasts have become more accurateHurricane forecasts have improved dramatically over the past 50 years. The National Hurricane Center publishes data each year about how its forecasts have aligned with reality, and the trend shows a decline in track errors since the 1970s.

Facebook wants to win back Gen Z users by transforming itself into more of a tool for young people to navigate adulthood better. The social media platform announced a redesign last week that caters to what execs believe younger people want to see more of. But Meta, the parent company of Facebook, noticed that young adults active on the platform tend to use its community-centric features like Facebook Marketplace and groups. “One is just: What do young people want — particularly young adults, Gen Z, ages 18 through 29 — from a social app these days? “Nearly all Facebook users are telling us they’re there to keep up with friends and family.

A judge in Colorado on Friday modified the five-year prison sentence for a paramedic who was convicted in the death of Elijah McClain to four years' probation. Peter Cichuniec, 51, was sentenced earlier this year after he was found guilty of criminally negligent homicide in the death of the Black pedestrian. Michael Jackson’s debts and creditor’s claims at the time of his death in 2009 totaled more than $500 million, according to a court filing by the pop superstar’s estate that provides details of his financial woes toward the end of his life. Jackson owed about $40 million to the tour promoter A.E.G., according to the filing, which was made in Los Angeles County Superior Court this month and earlier reported by People magazine. The filing said that 65 creditors made claims against the singer after his death, some of which resulted in lawsuits, and that some of his debt had been “accruing interest at extremely high interest rates.”A representative for the Jackson estate, which is executed by John Branca and John McClain, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The estate filed the court papers as a request to authorize the payment of about $3.5 million to several legal firms for their work in the second half of 2018. Socialites are playing chess on "The Real Housewives of New York City." In 1990, according to the US Chess Federation, only 4% of chess players were women. Out in the world, chess' resurgence has been accompanied by a wave of new clubs and events. I made a pilgrimage to the Marshall Chess Club, a 109-year-old institution in Greenwich Village. The following evening, I went to an East Village bar and found a very different scene at Club Chess.

“Anti-Israel protests on college campuses threaten Jewish students,” says the ad, which was shared first with CNN. While supporters of the legislation say it will help combat antisemitism on college campuses, opponents argue it overreaches and threatens to chill free speech. Some Democrats see the new investigative effort into college campuses and Johnson’s recent visit to Columbia University as a divisive political ploy. “Clearly it’s a very high priority for him,” GOP Rep. Frank Lucas of Oklahoma, the chairman of the House Science Committee, told CNN. House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, who sits on the Education panel, is also expected to play a prominent role in the effort.

A Colorado paramedic convicted in the 2019 death of Elijah McClain, a young, unarmed Black man, was sentenced to four years of probation with 14 months of work release on Friday, the final chapter of an explosive case that thrust the Denver suburb of Aurora into the national spotlight and helped usher in sweeping public safety reforms. Jeremy Cooper, 49, a former paramedic with Aurora Fire Rescue, was found guilty in December of criminally negligent homicide. A second paramedic, Peter Cichuniec, 51, a former lieutenant with the department, was sentenced last month to five years in prison. Judge Mark Douglas Warner of the District Court in the 17th Judicial District said neither the jury nor the court saw evidence that Mr. Cooper purposely gave Mr. McClain an overdose though his actions deviated from the standard of care. “It’s almost unthinkable the way things rolled out,” he said, later adding, “It didn’t have to happen.”

Dommaraju Gukesh, a 17-year-old Indian grandmaster, made history on Sunday: He won the Candidates Tournament in Toronto, held to select the challenger for the World Chess Championship in the classical time control. With that achievement, he became the youngest player ever to qualify for the title match. Garry Kasparov, the former world champion, previously held the record; he became the challenger for the crown in 1983 at age 20. “The way that I handled myself during the event and the way that I played my games — it was really something that I am happy about,” he said. It will be a best-of-14 match, with a minimum prize fund of 2 million euros (about $2.1 million).

Columbia University President Minouche Shafik tried to avoid the firestorm of controversy that pushed out two of the three university presidents who testified on Capitol Hill in December. While the other university presidents provided lawyerly answers that went viral, Shafik and her three Columbia colleagues all unequivocally stated that such calls would violate the code of conduct at Columbia. For instance, the Columbia president was asked by Rep. Lisa McClain whether mobs shouting “from the river to the sea” or “long live the intifada” qualify as antisemitic comments. Some people don’t.”Only after David Schizer, the co-chair of Columbia’s task force on antisemitism, indicated it would qualify as antisemitism did Shafik agree. Davidai called Shafik a “coward” in a fiery speech last year criticizing the university president for failing to quiet “pro-terror” voices at the school.

Herbert Kroemer, a German-born American physicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for his part in discoveries that paved the way for the development of many trappings of modern life, including high-speed internet communication, mobile phones and bar-code readers, died on March 8. The death was announced by the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he was an emeritus professor. Dr. Kroemer’s most important contributions were in the development of so-called heterostructures. They vastly enhance the speed, and therefore the power, of transistors and other types of semiconductors that are the building blocks of all electronic equipment. But by the time he received a share, with two other scientists, of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2000, the impact of his work was so enormous, it could not be denied.
