Advertisement"Carthago delenda est" means — very emphatically — Carthage must be destroyed. As well as being a throwback to Roman history, it's a throwback to Zuckerberg's own history. So it seems appropriate that a throwback — if obscure — Latin phrase should be at the center of it.

Mark Zuckerberg shared a family photo with his daughters' faces hidden by emojis. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg provoked accusations of hypocrisy from users on his platforms by censoring his childrens' faces in a family photo. It is a common practice among parents to obscure the faces of their children in social media posts for privacy reasons. On Instagram, one user got 2,800 likes commenting under Zuckerberg's post: "Even Zuck doesn't trust his platforms to put his kids faces up." Much of the ire focused on accusing Zuckerberg of hypocrisy, since Meta has been embroiled in controversies relating to its users' data.

Detective Troy Patterson’s body was slid into a waiting hearse on Friday, 33 years after he last patrolled the New York City streets. He was a 27-year-old officer then, and a prolific one. He specialized in gun crime at a time when New York was at its nadir: In 1990, there were 2,245 homicides, the highest recorded number in the city’s history. And on Jan. 16 of that year, Detective Patterson nearly became among the first victims. As he washed his Nissan Maxima near his home in Brooklyn, he was confronted by a small group of men.

If Kosiah is found guilty of crimes against humanity, this could extend his sentence to life. The Kosiah hearings were often laden with emotion, with some Liberian witnesses and victims confronting him for the first time since the country's civil wars. They all asked for anonymity because of the risk of reprisals back home where former warlords still hold prominent roles. In another, a witness who had been held as a sex slave by a soldier described how Kosiah had stabbed one of the Liberian plaintiffs present in the back. "I want him in jail," she told Reuters on the opening day of the appeals trial on Jan. 11.

A failed New Mexico state House candidate visited the homes of local Democratic leaders to vehemently dispute his election loss weeks before he allegedly orchestrated a series of shootings at the residences, elected officials said. “Peña came to my house right after the (November) election. Police spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos said at a news conference early Monday evening that Peña alleged his defeat was the result of election fraud. Alieu Kosiah, a former rebel commander who fought against former President Charles Taylor's army in the 1990s, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2021 in Switzerland's first ever war crimes trial. The indictment has since been expanded to include crimes against humanity - the first time these charges are brought in a Swiss trial. A 2011 Swiss law allows prosecution for serious crimes committed anywhere, under the principle of universal jurisdiction. Unlike Sierra Leone which had its own civil war at the same time and later held war crimes trials, no prosecutions have taken place in Liberia. In November, a former Liberian rebel commander was sentenced to life in prison by a French court and a Finnish appeals court is hearing a Liberia war crimes case.

Taylor Weidman | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesNGOs estimate around 167,000 Cambodians have sold their land to pay microfinance loans over the last five years. A 2016 book published by the World Bank argued microfinance loans had reduced poverty and increased incomes in Bangladesh, and banking giant HSBC still promotes its funding of microfinance in the country. But the World Bank, an early and longstanding advocate of microfinance, has also been warning for years of risks including overindebtedness and the growing commercialization of the industry.
