So let’s do our best to tell you about Game 5 of the 2024 World Series — the game that crowned the Los Angeles Dodgers the champions of baseball, but also very possibly the craziest World Series clincher ever. Was that upside-down enough to qualify as the craziest World Series clincher ever? That was Game 5 of the 2024 World Series, the only postseason game in history in which all that happened. On one hand, STATS tells us that the previous two teams to do it in a World Series game both won anyway. That would be the Cubs, in Game 7 in 2016, and the Cardinals, in The David Freese Game (Game 6) in 2011.

An eighth-inning rally capped by sacrifice flies by second baseman Gavin Lux and outfielder Mookie Betts put the Dodgers in front. This title, the eighth in franchise history, can stand beside the Dodgers’ trophy from the pandemic-shortened season in 2020. The precedent feels preposterous until you consider the current Dodgers who will one day join them in the Hall of Fame. “Mark,” he told Freeman, “wants to win really bad.” That desire became clear to Ohtani when he met with the Dodgers. After Freeman launched his grand, Gibsonian walkoff in Game 1 against the Yankees, the Dodgers got the job done.

Ten active major-league starting pitchers have won a Cy Young Award — and nine of them have spent time on the injured list in 2024. The issue is not only the health of the modern starting pitcher, but the role those starters play in the sport these days. “You’ve got to get the starting pitcher back. But has the starting pitcher crisis risen to that level? If you’re a dominating starting pitcher in this era, it probably means you throw harder than the average pitcher.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Jim Leyland left his living room in Thornburg, Pennsylvania, and had gone upstairs to lie down, convinced the call to Cooperstown wasn't coming. Hall chairman Jane Forbes Clark was on the line and Leyland had been voted in, two weeks shy of his 79th birthday. Leyland coached in the Tigers minor league system, then started managing with Bristol of the Appalachian Rookie League in 1971. The Pirates sank from there following the departures of Bonds and ace pitcher Doug Drabek as free agents, and Leyland left after Pittsburgh’s fourth straight losing season in 1996. But the Marlins sold off veterans and tumbled to 54-108 in 1998, and Leyland left for the Rockies.

NEW YORK (AP) — Blake Snell won the National League Cy Young Award on Wednesday after leading the majors in ERA for the San Diego Padres, becoming the seventh pitcher to earn baseball's top pitching prize in both leagues. Snell, the American League Cy Young Award recipient in 2018 with Tampa Bay, joined Gaylord Perry, Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens, Roy Halladay and Max Scherzer as pitchers to win in both leagues. Harnessing his 95-96 mph heater and overpowering curve, Snell won eight of his last nine decisions and did not allow a run in five of his final six starts — including the last three. The four previous San Diego pitchers to win the Cy Young Award were Randy Jones (1976), Perry (1978), reliever Mark Davis (1989) and Jake Peavy (2007). The AL Cy Young was to be announced later Wednesday evening.

November 1 - PHOENIX -- The Texas Rangers are one win away from their first World Series title, and they will ask Nathan Eovaldi to finish off the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 5 on Wednesday. The Rangers took the 48,388 fans out of the game early with five-run innings in the second and third. Texas, which is a record 10-0 on the road in the postseason, will look to complete a perfect away run behind Eovaldi. Eovaldi allowed five runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings in Game 1, which Texas won 6-5 in 11 innings. The Rangers will have to go the rest of the World Series without injured slugger Adolis Garcia, who racked up eight home runs and 22 RBIs in the postseason.

PHOENIX (AP) — Texas Rangers slugger Adolis García and pitcher Max Scherzer will miss the rest of the World Series after getting hurt in Game 3 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. García, the AL Championship Series MVP, has a moderate strain of his left oblique. Scherzer, who had been in line to pitch a possible Game 7, has a muscle spasm in the right side of his back. García grabbed his left side while coming out of the batter’s box on his flyout against Luis Frías in the eighth inning. García was 3 for 10 in the World Series with two RBIs, including an 11th-inning home run off Miguel Castro that gave Texas a 6-5 win in Friday’s opener.

Despite the early exit of starter Max Scherzer, the Rangers grabbed a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Scherzer, facing his former team, had been struck by a ball hit up the middle by the Diamondbacks' Alek Thomas in the second inning. Jon Gray, who had been considered by Rangers manager Bruce Bochy to start Game 4, entered Game 3 in relief and earned the win. The Diamondbacks had the first real scoring opportunity of the game in the bottom of the second inning, when Christian Walker led off with a double. Jose Leclerc pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his fourth save of the postseason for the Rangers, who finished with five hits.
