He’s also lobbied for policies that would restrict VA care and believes veterans should ask for fewer government benefits. “We want to have full choice where veterans can go wherever they want for care,” Hegseth told Trump on speakerphone as Shulkin listened, according to Shulkin’s 2019 memoir. For Shulkin, a rare “holdover” from President Barack Obama’s administration to Trump’s, this was “the worst-case scenario” for veteran health care, and one he had repeatedly warned Hegseth against. As secretary of defense, Hegseth would oversee the Military Health System, which is separate from the Veterans Health Administration. “If this continues, the Defense Department will eventually be a health care and pension provider that also happens to fight wars,” he wrote.

The international poverty line, which the U.N. uses to measure global poverty, is very low. The international poverty line is valuable because it has succeeded in drawing the world’s attention to the extreme poverty of the world’s very poorest people. But to end poverty in all its forms everywhere, studying this poverty line alone is not enough. One way to see whether this higher poverty line is reasonable is to check whether it aligns with established national poverty assessments. For this, we need an appropriately ambitious poverty line that receives the same attention as the low international poverty line.

First, that American teenagers are experiencing a mental health crisis; second, that it is the fault of phones. “Smartphones and social media are destroying children’s mental health,” the Financial Times declared last spring. What do we really know about the state of mental health among teenagers today? But the American suicide epidemic is not confined to teenagers. Is there a stronger distress signal in the data for young women?

A New York court's decision on congressional maps has given the GOP hope to retake the House. New York's highest court rejected an attempt by state Democrats to redraw the congressional maps months ago. In the blue state, Republicans saw significant wins in Tuesday's midterm elections. New York's state constitution bans partisan gerrymandering, unlike other GOP-led states where redistricting maps were upheld. State Democrats had insisted that they did not engage in partisan gerrymandering with the redrawing of the maps.

The world's largest aircraft leasing firms, like Air Lease , Avolon and AerCap , which acquired GE 's airplane leasing business last year, are reaping the benefits. A tight supply of aircraft is driving up the price airlines pay to rent planes, just as travel demand returns. This year's surge in oil prices make newer, fuel-efficient planes more attractive than older ones, and higher interest rates could also drive up lease rates. "That will push lease rates higher through the rest of the year." Cronin said lease rates for Boeing Maxes and Airbus A320neos have risen by 10%-15% so far this year.
