CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Alex Ovechkin scored twice and became the third player in NHL history to have at least 20 goals in 19 consecutive seasons as the Washington Capitals beat the Calgary Flames 5-2 on Monday night. The 38-year-old Ovechkin had two power-play goals in the second period as Washington won its third straight game. He was the spark we needed tonight.”The Capitals have been helped in their playoff chase by a rejuvenated power play. “ ... It’s on the penalty kill guys have to do a better job, myself right up there.”Calgary was 0 for 3 on the power play. For me, that was the difference in the game,” Calgary coach Ryan Huska said.

NEW YORK (AP) — The NHL-leading Florida Panthers landed forward Vladimir Tarasenko from the Ottawa Senators for a pair of draft picks, adding more wing depth before the playoffs start. The Panthers sent a fourth-round pick in this year's draft to Ottawa as part of the deal, and the fourth-rounder would upgrade to a 2026 third-rounder if Florida wins the Stanley Cup this season. Ottawa also is getting a third-round pick from Florida in 2025, while the Senators are retaining half of Tarasenko's salary. “We are excited for him to join our team, and to compete for the Stanley Cup once again.”Ottawa now has $7.2 million in cap space. He has tons of playoff experience — 97 games in 10 years — and helped St. Louis win the Stanley Cup in 2017.

Rick Tocchet and Rick Bowness were together at NHL All-Star Weekend when news broke that the Winnipeg Jets traded for Sean Monahan. “It’s a great move by Winnipeg, great move by Vancouver getting our guy.”Toss in the Colorado Avalanche signing veteran winger Zach Parise around the same time, and the race for players is already well underway in the Western Conference. And there's still three weeks left until the March 8 deadline, as trade talk picks up and plenty more movement is expected. “Obviously, (we have) a lot of good players and a lot skill — strength throughout the whole lineup. Getting Parise without having to give up draft picks, prospects or players from their roster was a nice first step for general manager Chris MacFarland.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said it’s unlikely Nicklas Backstrom plays again this season after the Swedish center stepped away from the team last week, citing the ongoing issues with his surgically repaired left hip. MacLellan stopped short of ruling Backstrom out for the remainder of the season or saying the franchise cornerstone had played his final NHL game. He’s been such a big part of the organization,” MacLellan said Monday. He had just one point in eight games this season, was taken off the top power-play unit and had his ice time drastically reduced. “I don’t think I’m going to be the guy that’s going to be able to just replace Nicklas Backstrom," McMichael said.
