Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun will face questions from the Senate Permanent Subcommitee on Investigations on Tuesday over quality control concerns and whistleblower allegations. Boeing's bestselling 737 Max plane has been the source of controversy since two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019. Following the incident, company whistleblower Sam Salehpour came forward and claimed that the aerospace company put excessive stress on airplane joints, which reduced some of the planes' lifespans. Mohawk alleges that the lost parts were likely installed on airplanes in Boeing's Washington plant where 737 Max models are made. The company announced March that Calhoun will step down from his post as CEO before the end of the year.

Davidson thinks the artificial intelligence plans Apple unveiled on Monday will lead to a new era for the iPhone and open up possibilities for the tech company as it asserts itself in the AI race. Analyst Gil Luria upgraded Apple to buy and raised his price target to $230 per share from $200, which suggests a roughly 19% upside from Monday's $193.12 close. Luria's upgrade comes on the heels of Apple's announcement of its long-awaited generative AI initiatives , which it calls "Apple Intelligence," at its Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC, on Monday. That could lead to a much-needed iPhone upgrade cycle, Luria said, raising his fiscal year 2025 estimates above consensus on the expectation of an AI-driven boost for the smartphone maker. "Importantly, Apple is uniquely positioned to offer these capabilities, and may be the only one capable of doing so any time soon," Luria added.

The Department of Justice said on Tuesday that Boeing was in violation of a 2021 settlement related to problems with the company’s 737 Max model that led to two deadly plane crashes in 2018 and 2019. In a letter to a federal judge, the department said that Boeing had failed to “design, implement and enforce” an ethics program to prevent and detect violations of U.S. fraud laws in the company’s operations. Creating that program was a condition of Boeing’s settlement, which also carried a $2.5 billion penalty. The determination by the Justice Department opens the door to a potential prosecution of a 2021 criminal charge accusing Boeing of conspiracy to defraud the Federal Aviation Administration, though Boeing can contest Tuesday’s decision. In a statement, Boeing said that the company believed that it had honored the terms of the settlement, adding that it was looking forward to the opportunity to respond.

The company announced Tuesday that it booked orders for only three jets, all 737 Max planes, to an unidentified customer. But it also had three 737 Max orders canceled, adding up to zero net orders for the period. The last time that Boeing had zero or negative net orders was in January of 2021, when it had negative 1 net orders. He described the Alaska Air incident as the “straw that broke the camel’s back,” in terms of its plans to take delivery of the new, longer Max model. Both models have yet to be certified to carry passengers by the Federal Aviation Administration, a process that could now be delayed by the Alaska Air incident.

The Wells Fargo report, entitled “FAA audit opens up a whole new can of worms,” noted that Boeing’s quality control and engineering problems have been ongoing for years. After part of an Alaska Airlines] 737 Max 9 jet fell off the plane mid-flight, the likelihood of the US Federal Aviation Administration coming out of its investigation without significant findings was very low. The FAA last week opened an investigation into Boeing’s quality control after the Alaska Airlines incident. He also said Boeing is now more closely monitoring the work of a key supplier that builds the 737 Max fuselage. Wells Fargo analysts noted in their report that the FAA investigation could take some time to complete, noting many of its probes remain “under investigation” months after the original incidents.

The FAA gave Boeing the green light to start certification flight testing of its 737 MAX 10. The variant is expected to enter service in 2024 after years of production delays. The 737 MAX 10 will rival Airbus' best-selling A321neo praised for its capacity and efficiency. The 737 MAX 10 is one of Boeing's two MAX variants — the other being the MAX 7 — not yet certified to fly. Both the MAX 8 and 9 were officially ungrounded in November 2020, and Boeing expected its 737 MAX 10 to enter service in 2022.
