She is expected to cast the former president as an aspiring dictator, a message her campaign believes is breaking through. That argument has become the core of Harris’s pitch to voters, my colleague Erica Green, who has been reporting on the vice president for months, told me. “The Harris campaign is not one that’s driven by policy or even by enthusiasm,” Erica said. From the start, her energetic campaign “highlighted how much of an underwhelming fog Democrats were in under President Biden,” Erica told me. And unlike Hillary Clinton, Harris rarely mentions the fact that she would be the first woman to be president.

The American labor market, which for months has worried even some optimistic economists, looked in remarkably good shape today after the government released a new employment report. The robust jobs numbers align with other strong economic data to paint a portrait of a solid economy. The fresh data is good news for the Federal Reserve, the White House and Kamala Harris. The vice president has been trying to argue that she and President Biden deftly led the economy through the challenges of the pandemic. In related news, a surge in pandemic era start-ups has helped drive job growth, and could have longer-term benefits.

Democrats Are Upbeat, but Face a Tough Race Ahead

In Chicago, where thousands of Democrats spent the week celebrating their nomination of Kamala Harris for president, confidence has been overflowing. “The mood in Chicago was just really ebullient,” said Jess Bidgood, who writes the On Politics newsletter and spent the week at the convention. But joy in the summer does not always last, or translate to votes in the fall. They were riding high at their convention last month, just after Trump survived an assassination attempt and before President Biden stepped aside. Harris and other top Democrats seem to be well aware that things can change.

Arizona voters will decide on Election Day whether to establish a right to abortion in the state Constitution. The ballot measure is a major victory for Democrats, who have used the issue of abortion to energize their voters. “Poll numbers for abortion rights are higher than poll numbers for Kamala Harris,” my colleague Kate Zernike, who covers abortion, told me. “In Arizona, Democrats think this ballot measure can really help them draw more voters.”A similar question will appear on the ballot in Missouri, state officials there said today. If voters pass the measure, Missouri would become the first state where voters overturned a near-total ban, radically reshaping access for millions of residents.

When Donald Trump was president, he used Twitter to set policy, attack his critics and appeal to his followers. Trump is scheduled to appear tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern on X for an interview with the website’s owner, Elon Musk. For Trump, the event could offer an opportunity to regain some of the spotlight from Harris, whose new and energetic candidacy has forced his campaign to recalibrate its strategy less than three months before Election Day. Polls by The New York Times and Siena College released this weekend showed Harris with leads in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. “When I talk to Trump allies and advisers, many of them view the last three weeks as Trump’s worst sustained performance in a very long time,” Jonathan Swan, our politics reporter, said.

The Democratic National Committee announced today that Vice President Kamala Harris had secured enough delegates to clinch the Democratic Party’s nomination for president. She will be the first Black woman and person of South Asian heritage to earn the top spot on a major party’s ticket. Harris’s nomination will become official after the party’s virtual roll call vote ends on Monday, capping off a month of chaos for Democrats. Just two weeks ago, they were still debating which candidate would have the best chance of defeating Donald Trump in November. A prisoner swap involving seven countries freed the Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, two other Americans and several Russian opposition figures. It was the most far-reaching exchange between Russia and the West in decades. President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are planning to greet the released Americans tonight at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. The exchange was also a triumph of sorts for Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, who had long sought Krasikov’s release. “So, in the eyes of the Kremlin, Krasikov’s assassination in Berlin of a Chechen separatist leader whom Russia labeled a terrorist was legitimate,” he said.

Trump Questioned Harris’s Racial Identity
  + stars: | 2024-07-31 | by ( Matthew Cullen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Donald Trump questioned Kamala Harris’s identity as a Black woman today in front of an audience of Black journalists. “She was Indian all the way, and then, all of a sudden, she made a turn, and she went, she became a Black person,” he said of Harris, whose mother is Indian American and whose father is Black. The Harris campaign condemned Trump’s remarks and the White House called his comments “repulsive.”From start to finish, Trump’s appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists convention was contentious. The event — one of the most unusual appearances of the presidential campaign so far — was an opportunity for Trump to stake his claim to Black voters that he has insisted he can win over, even as he runs against the first Black woman ever nominated by a major party. But it was not clear he succeeded.

The Israeli military carried out an airstrike today in a suburb of Beirut, Lebanon, retaliating for an assault that killed 12 children and teenagers in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights over the weekend. Israeli officials said the strike had targeted Fuad Shukr, a Hezbollah commander who Israel said was responsible for the Golan Heights attack. Lebanese officials said that at least one person had died from the strike. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel had promised a “severe” response to the Golan Heights attack. Western officials had urged Israel to exercise restraint to avoid widening the long-simmering conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

This year’s presidential election has been transformed by the events of the last few weeks. For the next 99 days, until Election Day on Nov. 5, this newsletter will dedicate a section to the 2024 election, keeping you up to speed. Today, President Biden, in his first major event since opting out of his re-election run, called on Congress to impose 18-year term limits on Supreme Court justices and create an enforceable code of ethics on the justices. He also proposed a constitutional amendment that would reverse the court’s recent ruling giving presidents broad immunity from criminal conviction. House Speaker Mike Johnson called the proposal “dead on arrival.” Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, said she supported Biden’s effort.

Harris Narrowed Trump’s Lead in Polls

Just a few days after becoming the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris is virtually tied with her Republican rival, Donald Trump, according to a new New York Times/Siena College poll. The survey, which was conducted after President Biden announced that he was stepping aside, also showed that 70 percent of Democratic voters said they wanted the party to speedily consolidate behind her rather than engage in a more competitive and drawn-out process. Overall, Trump leads Harris 48 percent to 47 percent among likely voters nationwide. That’s roughly the same position Biden was in before his disastrous debate performance in June, but it’s a major improvement for Democrats from the past month. Biden trailed Trump by six percentage points in our last poll.

Netanyahu Defended Israel’s War Effort to Congress

At a joint session of Congress this afternoon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel issued a full-throated defense of his country’s nine-month military campaign in Gaza. He angrily pushed back on the criticism of Israel’s tactics that has rippled through the American political left, and praised the U.S.-Israel alliance. “Our enemies are your enemies,” Netanyahu said. Vice President Kamala Harris also declined to preside, as is traditional for the vice president. Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with Harris tomorrow, after a separate meeting with the president.

Democrats Cleared the Path for Harris’s Nomination

Vice President Kamala Harris has already secured the endorsement of the vast majority of elected Democrats, just a day after President Biden made the stunning announcement that he was dropping his re-election bid. Few obvious challengers to her nomination remain, as the party anxiously looks to move past the divisions that have torn it apart for weeks. She also secured the backing of Nancy Pelosi, the former speaker of the House, who continues to wield considerable influence in the Democratic Party. A few other key Democrats, like Barack Obama, have so far not endorsed Harris. This morning, the vice president made her first public appearance since Biden ended his campaign.

A Tech Outage Caused Disruptions Worldwide

A flawed software update sent out by a cybersecurity company caused a global technology outage today, affecting millions of computers. Airlines were forced to ground flights, 911 lines went down, banks reported glitches and hospitals had to cancel surgeries. Many companies recovered during the day, but other issues persisted with no clear end in sight. The chaos all stemmed from a software update sent by CrowdStrike, which is based in Austin, Texas. When the new code reached computers that run Microsoft Windows software, the machines began to crash.

Vance Will Introduce Himself to American Voters

Vance is 39 years old and has spent just 18 months as the junior senator from Ohio; he had never even attended a national political convention before this year. But tonight, the newly minted Republican vice-presidential nominee will introduce himself to millions of Americans as one of the party’s most powerful figures. You can expect Vance to use the prime-time address to tell his personal story, our political correspondent Michael Bender told me. So far, Vance has received a mostly warm welcome in Milwaukee, where the party’s convention is in its third day. “We’re at a moment in time right now where Trump can do no wrong in the party’s eyes,” Michael said.

Trump Picked J.D. Vance as His Running Mate
  + stars: | 2024-07-15 | by ( Matthew Cullen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Donald Trump announced today that he had selected J.D. Vance as his running mate, elevating the 39-year-old Senator and former Marine who transformed over the last few years from a sharp critic of the former president into one of his most loyal allies. The selection was made public on the first day of the Republican National Convention, where Trump was officially awarded enough delegates to become the party’s nominee for president. By choosing Vance, Trump tapped an ambitious ideologue who relishes the spotlight and has already shown he can energize donors. Vance’s selection positions him to continue pushing Trump’s movement after a potential second term.

Democratic Donors Froze Pro-Biden Contributions

Some major Democratic donors told the largest pro-Biden super PAC that their pledged contributions, worth about $90 million, were on hold while President Biden remains on top of the ticket, according to two people briefed on the conversations. The decision to withhold such enormous sums of money offered one of the most concrete examples yet of the concerns many Democrats have about Biden’s candidacy. But Biden has been adamant that he will remain in the race. He tried to use a nationally televised news conference last night to convince the American electorate — and Democratic leaders — that he can and will defeat Donald Trump in the November election. During the event, he demonstrated a grasp of the issues and seemed comfortable during a long discourse on foreign policy.

Biden Has Failed to Quiet His Democratic Doubters
  + stars: | 2024-07-10 | by ( Matthew Cullen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
President Biden has repeatedly rejected suggestions that he end his campaign, and the vast majority of Democratic lawmakers have declined to break with him. But today he faced fresh pressure, from Capitol Hill to Hollywood. Nancy Pelosi, the former House speaker and longtime ally of Biden, gave the strongest public signal yet that Democrats remain divided, suggesting in a television interview that the president still could reconsider his decision. “Time is running short,” she said, noting that she would support him “whatever he decides.”Pelosi’s comments were “emblematic of the game of chicken that a lot of Democrats are playing,” Catie Edmondson, our congressional correspondent, told me. “They have concerns about the president’s fitness to run, but they don’t want to be the ones to say Mr. President, please step aside.”Catie told me that she has continued to hear many Democrats “privately express real fears about the extent to which Biden could not only lose the White House but could drag down Democrats running in House and Senate races.”

At the NATO Summit, Attention Is on Biden

NATO leaders gathered in Washington today for a summit organized to celebrate the alliance’s 75th anniversary and emphasize the members’ long-term commitment. Western leaders believe that their efforts in Ukraine are working. President Biden, who is perhaps NATO’s most vocal advocate in Washington, has faced intense scrutiny about his age, acuity and ability to campaign after his disastrous debate performance last month. Biden encouraged voters to watch him closely and judge his ability to lead on the world stage for themselves. On Thursday, at the end of the summit, the president is scheduled to hold a news conference — his first full, solo face-off with reporters in the U.S. since November 2022.

After Biden’s Debate Disaster, an Uncertain Path

The Democratic Party is facing a growing crisis after President Biden’s struggles in his debate against Donald Trump last night. The Supreme Court seems poised to temporarily allow emergency abortions in Idaho when a woman’s health is at risk, according to a copy of what appeared to be the court’s opinion that was posted today, and then removed, from the court’s website. The majority’s unsigned opinion said that the case was “dismissed as improvidently granted” — rather than decided on merits — according to the 22-page document, which was published this afternoon by Bloomberg News. Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch dissented. A spokeswoman for the Supreme Court said that the document had been “inadvertently” uploaded by its publications unit. It would be the second time this term that the justices have deflected ruling on the merits of abortion.

Kenya’s president deployed the military today to crack down on what he called “treasonous” protesters. Demonstrators furious over the passage of a bill that would raise taxes stormed the Parliament building in Nairobi, climbed in windows and set fire to the entrance. The police fired at the protesters, who had flooded the streets around the Parliament by the thousands — some draped in the Kenyan flag and chanting for the president to resign. The contentious bill was introduced by Ruto’s government in May to address the country’s heavy debt burden. But Kenyans have widely criticized the legislation, saying it adds punitive new taxes and raises others on staple goods.

Biden Is Prepping for the First Debate
  + stars: | 2024-06-24 | by ( Matthew Cullen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
President Biden has spent the last five days at Camp David, the presidential retreat in the woods of northern Maryland, sparring with a man pretending to be Donald Trump and working with his closest advisers to prepare for this week’s debate. The president’s aides have turned a movie theater and an airplane hangar at Camp David into a mock debate stage. There, Ron Klain, a longtime adviser to Biden, is leading an effort to help Biden shake off the rust that often comes with being an incumbent on the defense and to combat voter concerns that he is too old to be president. Trump is taking a far looser approach to debate prep, with some policy briefings but no role playing. For both candidates, the debate, at 9 p.m. Eastern on Thursday in Atlanta, could be the highest-stakes moment of their rematch.
