President-elect Donald Trump is expected to nominate Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida for secretary of state in his administration in the coming days, according to three sources familiar with the selection process. Foreign policy is one of the few areas in which there is a deep philosophical disagreement among Trump's base. But there remains a different strain of foreign policy thinking among even prominent Trump supporters. Even though Rubio is an avowed Trump supporter, the perception is that he was one of the "less MAGA" options, a Trump ally told NBC News. Trump had considered Rubio as a running mate before he ultimately chose Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio.

The three-way fight to replace outgoing Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., pits Senate Minority Whip John Thune, R-S.D., against Sen. John Cornyn, a former McConnell deputy, and underdog candidate Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla. “It’s a loud online presence that doesn’t ultimately add up to votes in the Senate,” said one Senate Republican aide, who requested anonymity to speak candidly about the race’s dynamics. President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday named co-campaign chair Susie Wiles as his White House first chief of staff, one of the most important non-elected posts in Washington. “Susie Wiles just helped me achieve one of the greatest political victories in American history, and was an integral part of both my 2016 and 2020 successful campaigns,” Trump said in a statement Thursday. After Trump’s resounding victory Tuesday over Vice President Kamala Harris, there was an overwhelming sense that Wiles was the frontrunner to be White House chief of staff. “I’m told you know something about Florida,” Trump told Wiles when they first spoke on the phone, NBC News reported in March. Response to Wiles’ hire as chief of staff was overwhelmingly positive from Republicans.

A ballot measure that would have enshrined abortion rights in Florida's constitution failed on Tuesday, NBC News projects, after a political fight that was among the most hotly contested in the state this election cycle. The amendment won majority support from Florida voters, but it needed to cross the 60% threshold to pass under state law. Its defeat is a setback for reproductive rights groups in the red-leaning state and a victory for Republican Gov. Even though the ballot measure failed, the NBC News Exit poll found that 65% of Florida voters said abortion should be legal in all or most cases. Another ballot measure DeSantis opposed, the effort to legalize the use of recreational marijuana in Florida, also failed on Tuesday, NBC News projected.

Allentown is a majority-Hispanic city of 125,000, and about one-quarter of its overall population is of Puerto Rican descent — one of the highest concentrations of Puerto Ricans anywhere in the U.S. Pennsylvania’s polls will close at 8 p.m. EST on Election Night, but we may get a big clue about Trump’s Puerto Rican support before that. Majority-Hispanic Osceola County in Florida, just south of Orlando, is a large county (population about 450,000 — and growing) that’s about one-third Puerto Rican.

Much of Trump's closing message is focused on illegal immigration, one of the centerpieces of his campaign. The interview, which was widely hyped by Trump and his supporters, was a snapshot of his, at best, untraditional attempt at a campaign closing message and, at worst, his tendency to step on his own policy pushes. The discipline of the Harris campaign contrasts with that of Trump, whose late-cycle rallies have maintained the sort of rambling, unfocused structure he has long been known for. And she carries the tiny share of voters who participated in 2022 but not 2020 by 9 points (52% to 43%). Last month, a state-run health care agency launched a website that shares information that proponents of the ballot measure say is misleading. The DeSantis administration has also ramped up efforts to investigate allegations of fraud in the signature-gathering process by the groups behind the measure. In addition, the state Health Department sent cease-and-desist letters this month to multiple television stations across the state that had aired an ad that supported the ballot measure. Spokespersons for the DeSantis administration, the Health Department and the Agency for Health Care Administration didn’t respond to questions. Even putting the efforts from DeSantis and other Florida Republicans aside, the ballot measure faces an uphill climb.
