The North Yorkshire Council in England has been in the hot seat recently for its changes to street signs — not because of anything on them, but rather because of something left off. One street in the town of Harrogate was rendered as St. Marys Walk. St. Marys Walk was just the beginning. It turns out the county plans to phase out apostrophes on all street signs, in part “to prevent complications while searching on databases,” an official told my Times colleague Jenny Gross. How many people would really miss the connection between St. Marys Walk and St. Mary’s Church?

In the Metropolitan Opera’s new production of “El Niño,” which reimagines the story of Jesus’ birth and early childhood, there are singing and dancing Virgin Marys, Marys of the land and sea; there’s an Indigenous Mary, a Tropical Mary, a Golden Mary. In the director Lileana Blain-Cruz’s vision, the action takes place across multiple “planes.” It could be a lot to take in. Thankfully for Mr. Levi Blanco, 39, he has developed something of a shorthand while working with Ms. Blain-Cruz, whom he has known since he was an M.F.A. The pair have collaborated several times, including on “The Skin of Our Teeth,” for which Mr. Levi Blanco won a Tony Award in 2022. In the case of “El Niño,” painterly scenery by the set designer Adam Rigg evokes the natural environment.

CNN —Oscar nominee Da’Vine Joy Randolph continued her award season sweep when she won a supporting actress trophy for “The Holdovers” at the 2024 BAFTA Awards on Sunday. Randolph previously won a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for her performance in the 2023 dramedy. She is also nominated for an Oscar and Screen Actors Guild Award, the ceremonies of which will be held in the coming weeks. During her acceptance speech at the BAFTAs, Randolph got emotional while speaking about how meaningful it was to play her character Mary Lamb in the Alexander Payne-directed film. “I knew…that Mary was a character that was so much bigger than me,” Randolph said while on stage clutching her statuette.
