CNN —A powerful “bomb cyclone” will combine with an atmospheric river to unleash over a month’s worth of rain, hurricane-force wind gusts and feet of mountain snow to parts of the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. This bomb cyclone will work with an atmospheric river, a long plume of water vapor moving like a river through the atmosphere, to wring out heavy rainfall and significant mountain snowfall in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California beginning Tuesday. The pair will stall along the coast and hammer the area with hazardous conditions through the week and into the weekend. Rainfall of this magnitude is expected to cause significant urban flooding, debris flow on roadways and river flooding. Strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines,” the National Weather Service office in Seattle warned.

CNN —Tropical Storm Sara is here and closing in on Central America where it will unleash disastrous flooding rain in the region. The storm will bring “life-threatening” flooding rainfall up to 30 inches to Honduras and double-digit rainfall totals to other parts of Central America, the NHC warned. This scenario would bring strong winds and torrential rain to Central America, but could keep the storm away from the US entirely or have it approach as a very weak storm. It would still unleash life-threatening flooding rainfall in Central America and head for dangerous strike on Belize and Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. This would bring more substantial impacts to Central America, the Yucatán and Belize and a much more troubling forecast for the US.

CNN —Halloween may be over, but hurricane season still has a few unsettling tricks left in its final month. Three tropical trouble spots bear watching in the Atlantic basin in the coming days as a strange hurricane season continues to defy expectations. CNN WeatherThe US Gulf Coast could finally have some atmospheric protection on its side after multiple devastating hurricane strikes this season. This season is above average in terms of named storms, hurricanes and major – Category 3 or stronger – hurricanes. Hurricane season officially ends on November 30, but tropical systems aren’t bound by that date.

CNN —One of the driest months in United States history is coming to a close after causing the worst drought in more than 20 years in parts of the East as temperatures soar well above average there. As of October 25, the average precipitation across the Lower 48 was less than an inch. Only five months in the 129 years of records have ended with less than an inch of average precipitation over the Lower 48. Flash drought happens when drought conditions increase quickly, rather than over a multi-month or yearly timeframe, according to NOAA. It’s the state’s worst drought level since 2002.

CNN —The deadly flooding that rocked Spain this week following intense, historic rainfall is so expansive and severe the area looked like an inland sea from space. Parts of the area now look like an extension of the Balearic Sea after unprecedented rainfall turned what should be dry ground into a vast expanse of water, satellite imagery captured on October 30 shows. Satellite imagery taken on October 8 and October 30 show the before and after of this week's flooding in east-central coastal Spain. La Niña isn’t here yet, but has a 60% chance of emerging through November, according to the Climate Prediction Center. While it’s still unclear just how strong La Niña will get, current forecasts favor a weaker one. That outlook could be change when the center releases its latest forecast on Thursday based on trends toward a weaker La Niña. CNN WeatherThis is due to the behavior of the jet stream — essentially a river of air that storms flow through — which often shifts north during a La Niña winter. La Niña had a hand in the extremely wet winter much of the state endured from December 2022 to February 2023 and during the wet winter before that.

The surging floodwaters from Hurricane Milton poured in through the windows late Wednesday and their refrigerator slowly floated away. Even after floodwaters subside, the stress and anxiety can lead to lingering mental health challenges. Storms can exacerbate existing mental health problems or lead to new ones. Concerns about the mental health effects of back-to-back disasters come as researchers predict more frequent extreme weather events. But research suggests the hurricanes will make people more vulnerable to mental health problems and likely make it harder for them to recover, she said.

The Weather Prediction Center has increased the rainfall threat for Wednesday to a rare “high” risk, or a level 4 of 4. For Tampa that would equal more than five months’ worth of rain – the average for October is 2.34 inches. More than 10 inches of rain could also break monthly records for some cities in central Florida. The heavy rainfall combined with high storm surge could create an especially dangerous situation. Flood watches remain for nearly 20 million people across Florida, and over 5 million people are under storm surge alerts.

Attorney General Ashley Moody issued a stark warning to those who ignore evacuation orders. WFTSFlorida leaders still working to respond to damages from Hurricane Helene issued emphatic pleas to Tampa-area residents Sunday to heed evacuation orders, as Hurricane Milton is expected to strengthen and hit the state’s western coast by mid-week. “Nobody up here can save your life if you put yourself in harm’s way.”Officials expect storm surge, other flooding and high winds that knock out power, Scott said. With some roads still flooded from Helene, residents can expect a similar kind of storm surge from Milton – but this time with strong winds, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister warned. Many people are still without cell phone service after Helene, Moody said, advising residents to buy a small AM radio and a couple of batteries.

CNN —Parts of icy Antarctica are turning green with plant life at an alarming rate as the region is gripped by extreme heat events, according to new research, sparking concerns about the changing landscape on this vast continent. Vegetation covered less than 0.4 square miles of the Antarctic Peninsula in 1986 but had reached almost 5 square miles by 2021, the study found. The rate at which the region has been greening over nearly four decades has also been speeding up, accelerating by more than 30% between 2016 and 2021. At least 125 places from the West Coast to the Rockies have tied or broken all-time October heat records since the month began. It’s another reminder that extreme heat is no longer confined to the summer as the world warms due to fossil fuel pollution. “If we continue to warm the plant by burning fossil fuels, late-season heat waves like this will become much more common.”California has been at the epicenter of the extreme heat.
