Moody's estimates that between 2023 and 2028, the electricity usage in data centers will grow 43% yearly. That's not including the energy-intensive process of constructing even more data centers, which Big Tech is scrambling to do. Business Insider spoke with three market experts to get their thoughts on what companies are best positioned to succeed as AI's appetite for energy strains existing infrastructure. Baker is betting on the utilities and cooling solutions providers that service the energy needs of data centers. New infrastructure needs to be built out, and the existing infrastructure needs to be bolstered, according to Wilhelmus.

Nvidia might have to look outside of its artificial intelligence empire to acquire some key data center-related technologies, according to Susquehanna Financial Group. Analyst Christopher Rolland said Nvidia has "two glaring holes" for potential acquisition within optical and analog networking. Optical technologies in data centers have a variety of purposes such as supporting network traffic growth, transmitting and receiving optical signals in data centers, and offering cost and power savings while facilitating high-capacity data transmission. Analysts' average price target, per FactSet, suggests potential downside for Lumentum and Coherent given their recent stock run-ups. Rolland holds a positive rating on Nvidia shares with a $160 price target — higher than the average from analysts polled by FactSet, which implies more than 29% potential upside for the chip darling.

Recent comments from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang seemed to revive investment in the turbulent AI sector this week, while leading portfolio managers to recenter attention on the winning trades. Nvidia shares rallied more than 8% on the heels of Huang's remarks, which soothed some recent market jitters over the delayed payoff from AI investments. Broadcom reported an earnings beat Thursday, driven by strong sales of its AI products and VMware software. We view Broadcom as one of the biggest AI beneficiaries through its networking and custom chip businesses. However, Broadcom generated $5.3 billion in free cash flow when excluding restructuring and integration cash costs in the quarter. The semi number is a slight miss versus expectations, and the difference is probably due to the non-AI business lines because AI sales are humming. Broadcom raised its full-year AI revenue forecast to $12 billion, up from prior guidance of over $11 billion.

Activist Commentary: Starboard is a very successful activist investor and has extensive experience helping companies focus on operational efficiency and margin improvement. With 90%+ gross margins and 35% operating margins, Autodesk is a leader in AEC software. Further, its operating margins are not much worse than those of its peers at first blush. However, Starboard correctly does not judge the company's operating margins on the mean of its peer set, but by the potential embodied in its gross margins and market position. He no longer serves on the board of Autodesk, but he could certainly be an informal advisor to Starboard – or a cautionary tale for Autodesk.
